I loved that you focussed on artists of the past, and what they chose to do in their art, then focussing on your thinking and choosing before making your art. Thank you, Jess. A fabulous lesson about what the artist art needs to do, before what they do becomes their art.
We often overlook the versatility of the humble Round, considering it was the only brush head the masters had access to back in the day, and yet, look how much they were able to pull off with it. It really is the OG paintbrush, and so gets my vote.
I really like how the flat brush study looks more abstract and the round brush study looks more realistic, even though you basically used the same colors, medium and object. Art is so cool! I wish my paintings looked more like what I see in my head than something my 5-year-old self would draw. You make it look so easy!
I love both flat and round, but generally use flats for broad strokes and smooth curves while I often use round for complex curves and detail. Mister Tomato was a great model.
whenever I go out into nature to draw trees I always say to the tree "Hello friend'. When I'm done I thank my model of the day with an affirmation of gratitude toward the tree and I might splash them with a bit of water as an offering. After watching this video I t I want to get some of both types of brushes and see what comes. I like them both! 😊🧡🙏
It’s so cool how different the painting style could be if it’s done with different brushes. I personally like using both in my paintings but mostly feel comfortable using round brush 😊
Hi Ms Jess I'm 14 and from southern india and I just love how much you style, put meaning ,processing and the amount of work and professionally you put into your art, you keep me motivated to paint ,each video is as meditative as sitting under a waterfall , gorgeous, clean flow of knowledge and experience readily flowing onto my head Tysm!
This was such an insightful comparison between flat and round brushes! 🎨 I really appreciate how you broke down the strengths of each type and provided practical tips on when to use them. It’s so helpful for anyone looking to improve their painting techniques. Thanks for sharing your expertise! 🖌👏
The round was my fave outcome. I’ve never used acryla gouache, traditional is my choice. Would love to see more gouache videos, landscapes for sure! Thanks Jess.
This video was SO helpful! You answered a few questions I have had about the choices artists make in regards to emphasizing angles vs softening them. I couldn’t find a good answer anywhere and you summed it up in a couple sentences on a video comparing brush types lol. Thank you!
I love both of them. Because they are 2 side of a same thing. Just like two photo of someone smiling on one and ndutral on the others. I m sure mister tomato is fully happy with such beautiful portraits😊 😊😊😊😊
This was so helpful as I had never thought about what brush I used could influence my painting style so much. Seeing the side by side paintings and how they turned out, explained things visually much more clearly than any oral explanation ever could have. I have seen paintings before in art galleries etc. and after watching this video, it has now "clicked" with me how they painted things in certain ways that I just didn't realise before watching this. Paintings that contained rocks, waterfalls, upright trees and angular cliff faces that stood out as solid, erect, and strong, while the leaves, pools of water with ripples, grasses and flowers swaying in the breeze, were all delicate, flowing, gentle. This makes so much sense now, and also explains how to achieve them where only confusion was before. Thank you.
Both look beautiful the flat brush is my favourite, it conveys a sturdy feeling. The round brush is rich it has a warmness to it. Thanks for the video Jess, will love to see a portrait done with the different brushes
Jess thank you for another amazing video! I loved seeing this process and it was brilliant to see the end when they were being painted side by side. I was sure I was going to love the flat brush one more, but the round brush one is awesome too. I will watch this video more times in the future!
This is interesting to consider. I personally love when the brush strokes are left loose and visible. I tend to use mostly flat brushes but your painting on the right looks so cool and more textured. It records the energy that went into the painting. I do find I often forget to keep changing brushes when painting. I wonder. Have you ever made a video about your camera, lighting setup etc. It would be cool to see how you make these videos as the production quality is so good. I know there are other aspects too, like your story telling skills.
Thank you! That’s so awesome! And I will do my best to try and get a video about my art setup for filming. I’ve gotten it down to a nice little functional setup. But yes. Story telling is an essential back bone!!
Hullo Jess, you are an amazing instructor and your videos are always a joy to behold, masterfully done! I remember complaining to my grandma she would only give us one or two brushes to paint a painting with. I grew up using a number 12 round brush and occasionally I would get to use a 1 1/2 or 2 inch model or brush for skies or ocean. So I still use mostly brown brushes but I have all sorts now and use depending on my subject. Of course you make Mr. tomato look like a star with either brush and either style! Thank you for sharing your style with us and how do you apply the strokes with different brushes to the same subject. I have to say that I smile every day as I come into my kitchen and see your framed artwork. Thank you for sharing your paintings with us, I know that some people are not interested in prints, yet I have several different prints of your work and I doubt that I could afford originals! You are also sharing your art more widely in print form than original paintings! Thank you. I encourage everyone to stop by Jess’s website and find a treasure for themselves, wonderful selections and amazing prices too!
I like both. Each brush gives a different look. I like the smooth roundness of the round brush. The strokes of the flat brush is nice also. I’m learning painting at school but I didn’t get an understanding of the brushes.
This is a very interesting video; thank you. Both examples are very nice - the flat brush painting has a crystalline look, and the round brush painting has a posterized quality.
This is an awesome comparison! I'm a beginner and always picked up a round just because of most tutorials I saw used round. But I always gravitated the flat brush look without realizing it. Thanks for sharing.
Both are fabulous and seeing the side by side speed paint was fascinating. The one painted with the flat brush is so lively, I think, largely because it took you out of your comfort zone which forced you to really lean into your creativity. As I work in acrylic ink I probably use a round brush more than a flat brush, but it all depends on what kind of texture the work demands.
Great video and a very good lesson. I love exploring different avenues of learning from my art. I, myself, am more of a round brush kind of gal, but my very favorites are dagger brushes. Thanks for sharing your skills.
How fun! I love your demo of using 2 different techniques/brushes. I actually can't decide which one I like the best. I guess it's good to experiment and practice doing it ourselves and seeing what brushstrokes we prefer. I enjoyed this video so much. Thank you!
I generally prefer flat, particularly the angled ones, but small rounds and a good liner brush will always have a place among my supplies. This was a very interesting video to watch and certainly showcases the strengths of both brush types. I'd encourage you to try using flat brushes closer to the way you use your rounds, because they are more versatile than you might realise. I paint in a style much closer to the painting you made with the rounds, but I use flat brushes and end up with a similar result. All in all though, a very good comparison video.
I so enjoyed your video Jess! Can’t choose between the two because they have their own unique look, you’re so talented 😊. I bought a nice flat brush yesterday! So I’m even more excited to have a play now… Oh and Mr Tomato has such beautiful skin 😂 and you captured him perfectly, both times! Thanks again for all you share ❤x
Thanks, Jess for the awesome video of the two brush shapes and techniques each one can make. so helpful and what a big difference! You crack me up, saying Mr Tomato model was getting ready to pose. Always funny, always a great artist. We learn so much from you.
My goodness. Did you read my comments in your library video. I really think this will help me with my anniversary gift of my wife's 💐 from our wedding.
I’m a Filbert brush kind of girl. I like the mix of the flat and the round together. Though I don’t think I’ve ever really thought much about it before. Flat brushes were always the only options we had in a lot of my art classes growing up. Maybe I need to try more round ones.
It's interesting. There are elements of the flat brushes that I prefer and some of the round ones that I prefer. The stem with the flat brush (is it the brush or the colors used?) and the texture that you give to the tomato skin with the round. I also prefer the highlights on the tomato made with the round brush. Maybe it would be different with an even smaller flat brush? Just commenting to make myself really look at them too 🙂 I love this kind of comparison. What about different types of paints next? Oil, acrylic, gouache or watercolor? And the voice over really helps to follow your process!
I've always found the flat brush strokes to be fascinating. You can look at the piece and be like, yes it's a tomato, but then seeing all those angular strokes render a smooth object. It just makes my eyes dance around the piece. Uggh. I don't know how to explain it... 😂
I understand 100% what you’re saying bec I feel the same. I am a new artist and I’m attracted to the bold strokes of painting with flat brushes. It makes me cozy inside lol
14:01 I really hope you stay creative, don't forget to stay curious I just got a third cat yesterday from the shelter, he is an orange tabby less than six months old - talk about curious I'd say I have much to learn from him about trying to get back in tune with that sense of curiosity I had when I was a child I remember something else you said a while ago is I like to pretend I'm a child experiencing something for the first time - I still have much to learn from him - and from you of course 0:04 I find it very interesting how you say how marks convey feeling and how you have said before how color can be psychological - my art is music not visual but I think this child-like sense of creativity is universal and very contagious As a response to this and everything else that happened to me today I will write a song for you using the most beautiful chords I know c maj7 to f maj7 - a kind of sound found in imagine by john lenon, yestersay once more by the carpenters, heres where the story ends by the sundays, and so far away by carole king - maybe one day I will play them for you ? Never thought of an artist actually looking into materials for a painting rather than just saying "Materials don't matter at all" I respect their ideas to encourage younger artists but it is really important to tell the whole truth
Love both but the flat one really speaks to me! Super helpful content for figuring out what type of art styles I want to explore. Thanks for sharing! What painting book were you referencing?
Only a devoted artist would present fruits as live models in the flesh and say brushes render feeling through particular stroke textures🎨🖌🧡
…😌🤭 it’s only the truth 🤣

I just got a third cat yesterday from the shelter, he is an orange tabby less than six months old - talk about curious I'd say I have much to learn from him about trying to get back in tune with that sense of curiosity I had when I was a child
I remember something else you said a while ago is I like to pretend I'm a child experiencing something for the first time - I still have much to learn from him - and from you of course
0:04 I find it very interesting how you say how marks convey feeling and how you have said before how color can be psychological - my art is music not visual but I think this child-like sense of creativity is universal and very contagious
As a response to this and everything else that happened to me today I will write a song for you using the most beautiful chords I know c maj7 to f maj7 - a kind of sound found in imagine by john lenon, yestersay once more by the carpenters, heres where the story ends by the sundays, and so far away by carole king - maybe one day I will play them for you ?

I'd also be curious to know what determines the gender of a tomato
