Touareg V8 vs TDI: 8,000 lbs Towing Battle

- In this video we find out which Touareg can handle a HEAVY load. 8,000 lbs.
I have always wanted to know how much better a Tdi would tow over the V8. There really isn't that much Touareg info out there so I bought one and ran a test myself.
Check out some of our other videos. Subscribe for more.
Thanks for sharing your experience. The towing capacity was what initially attracted me to the Touareg. I needed something that could tow, but didn't really want to get a truck. I'm sorry that they just didn't do well in North America. I mean, you can pull a camper/horse trailer/other trailer yet have a daily drive with nice features and it isn't like driving a bus.
Me too! I love the Touareg for it's towing capacity. The V8 always did well but the Tdi does so much better. Effortless in the tdi. Set the cruise and don't think about it. The V8 can do it but I had to pay more attention to it and shift gears a lot more often.
Great job on the video. I have a 13 Touareg TDI and tow 5k lbs. Always wondered how the V8 would handle the load and now I know. TDI is great at towing but that V8 sound on a acceleration cannot compare.
Bryan Abbott Thanks for the support!
I owned a 2012 TDI Exec for 165000 miles and it was the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. I was rear ended twice and both time the trucks that hit me faired far worse than my Touareg. Mileage was great and I never had an engine or drive train problem. Loved that VW.
why did you sell it ?
Great video!
It would be helpful to post a comparison in tabular format. Difficult to get all of the info from the video.
Are you not able to display MPG live average?
great video! please make one of this videos with a touareg v10 Tdi!
edd cz I’ve always wanted one. Just need to find one first. Thanks for the support.
Collosal money pit though
Taller tires on the V8 will affect gearing...So maybe consider the ratios...The torque of the diesel also comes on fully at a different point than the V8...
The trailer pushing down on the Tdi (spring suspension) was to be expected but the reasoning adding the V8 on the trailer is because the dual axle trailer and the centering of the v8 really didn't add that much to the tongue.
Weight distribution hitch would seem useful to level things out, no?
Yes it would
When you say the TDI, is it the 3.0 or the 5.0?
3.0
@@Sugarkryptonite Oh ok, didn't know you got multiple TDI touaregs in america
@@taylorharrison8765 The V10's were earlier only for a short period.
@@Sugarkryptonite Oh, right
We are going to look at a 05 V8 tomorrow. Did all of the V8s have air suspensions?? Or was it a option?
gillard petry it was an option for the V8 and V10. A lot more common with the first generation Touaregs compared to later models. I loved my V8 with air.
Okay so I made a mistake. We are going to look at a 05, V6 today.
Have you checked the engine module code to see if it has a tune? Pretty impressive that it stayed in 6th.
I haven't checked but I doubt it has a tune. All the emissions components are still there.
It's surprising how much more towing power this has over the V8.
@@spottedeuros1529 I have a 2006 V8 and a 2013 TDI with the 8 speed and when I tow my 7000 pound enclosed trailer with the TDI it will shift down to 4th on hills which isn't the best for fuel economy. It's still better than the V8 but I was hoping for more. Was thinking that if you had a tune, the extra torque is allowing it to stay in a higher gear. If you end up getting the 2012 TDI that you showed in another video, please do the same tow test.
VWRalf Hmm. It’s got to be the wind resistance. I’ve towed some travel trailer that were about 5,000 lbs and the v8 Touareg had a harder time pulling that compared to the same weight with my car hauler.
Also the Touareg is a smaller SUV so bigger trailers stick out on the sides and above.
TDI all day love my TDi Touareg i wonder how the new one like mine with the 8spd trans compares, also have you considered a tune im going to do the kerma tune soon here im excited
EL paWLo I agree! I’m counting the days until I can get an 8 speed. I would love I newer Touareg. I’d love to get a tune. My Touareg has 185,000 miles so rather wait until I can get one with lower miles to spend the money on a tune.
@@spottedeuros1529 I'm ordering my tune this week I'll let you know im in a 2012 tdi touareg
EL paWLo awesome man. Let me know how you like it.
Hope your tune works well....recently I stumbled upon some seriously bad reviews of Kerma TDI.
@@ClubsportEvoluzione it works awesome better mpg better pickup better throttle response could not ask for more and it's still epa compliant
22:42 TdI what do you mean with that light with "!" in the center of thet orange light
i think its a light bulb light
Do you realize that in the Touareg V8 you have larger wheels, which makes the car harder to accelerate and if you set the cruise control to 65 mph, you are actually going faster?
would y ever buy V10 tdi ? i didn't know Q7 came also in V12 tdi :)
I have thought about getting one. Owners of the V10 love them and everyone else hates them. ha
@@spottedeuros1529 buy this one might get for 8 grand Canadian www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/mississauga-peel-region/2004-volkswagen/1499737524, seems good and relatively low mileage
Interesting.
I picked up Q7 with tdi. It’s a great engine.
mateostyle nice! I was just looking at those today. They looks so good. Maybe when I need a 3rd row.
@@spottedeuros1529 I recently drove back home from Brandon, FL. I filled up in Brandon, drove all the way to Fayetteville, NC and filled up again (still had some range left though). I then drove home to Northern VA with more than half a tank left. These TDIs are traveling machines and I would buy another one (in a Passat perhaps) right now except their prices have gone up with the used car market but also bc the current gas prices are making them more desirable. I just filled up tonight (first time since Fayetteville and diesel here is 2.96 a gallon while mid-grade gas is 3.56! I’m really loving the Q7 TDI).
Now, the vehicle does have its quirks such as stupid placement of the windshield washer nozzles that hit the parked position of the wipers (perhaps I can adjust), weak mechanism on the third row roof sunshade that breaks (on my second replacement part), the unlock buttons are on the bottom of the button vs top which is counterintuitive to everyone - I mean what were the German engineers thinking, rear seat controls that allow my two year old to lock himself in the running car when I’m pumping gas even though the child safety lock accessible to the driver locks out the windows and door - another what were they thinking moment, and a few others I’ve made a list on hoping to make my own video!).
But, I would buy this car again without thinking. The diesel is the perfect engine for this car.
says one is v8 and then says the other is a tdi is like saying, this one is a straight four and the other is a diesel'' doesnt make sense, is it a v8? a v6? v10? you say the difference is the v8 and the tdi. why do you call it a tdi? can you say what engine it is?
Turbo diesels are awesome, so much torque and an easier car to live with or daily drive than a gas guzzling v8
Love watching the fuel gauge moving on that first V8 pull. LOL
Michael Braucht haha never noticed that. Pretty funny. Burns through the gas pretty quick.
I have a 2923 Volkswagen Tiguan r line
Isn’t 8k over the tow limit?
Ryan F Yes it is. Towing Capacity is 7,700. I’m not sure on the exact weight but it is probably pretty close to 7,700.
Not a fair test tires on v8 are not the correct size they are bigger so gearing is longer
Very true but it's a big enough difference to know that the Tdi is better.
Ein Felder i agree the tires make a difference. The V8 still lacks a lot of power compared to the Tdi. Switching to regular size tires would help the V8 but it still can’t keep up with the V8.
What engine is the TDI
3.0TDI. The only one we got in the US.
@@spottedeuros1529 v10 tdi too
Best car to drive ever🤔but to expensive to own
For towing Diesels are always better, A lot more torque,
It's surprising how much of a difference there is.
The near best Touareg is the V8 TDI, a real beast is the V10 TDI, I owns both, I never wand miss them.
Why don’t you buy Audi TDIs? I’d love to see some Audi content on here!!
logan c I would too. I’m always looking at the Q7 Tdis. One day I’ll get one.
Spotted Euros What about A3s? I have a 2013 A3 Premium Plus TDI and it is absolutely amazing.
You should pick up some. They sell super well and for a high price. The sticker price on mine was $15,888 but I only paid $12,500 thanks to my technician.
21:10 wow and I bet the V-8 weighs more.
SentByHim less room in the engine bay too.
