    Here's a good one , Phil Chen being a Jamaican received the Order of Distinction (OD)
    in Jamaica in 1994 and he then sent a letter to the ministry of culture to induct a greater musician as a friend, mentor and inspiration ''Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett'' of the Wailers, who he said showed him many licks through the years, in 2021 he finally received his Order of Distinction ,,, both R.i.P

    The "Do You Think I'm Sexy", bassline joke is a play on another very old grade school joke which was before my time, but like the TV show, the joke lived on because of reruns which ran on TV for many years in the 60s.
    Between 1949 and 1957, there was a Western themed TV show called the Lone Ranger. The theme song for the show was a section of the classical piece, The William Tell Overture by Rossini.
    The classical piece suited the show because of it's fast paced gallop, which went well with chase sequences on horseback.
    The joke assumes that the audience knows the show and the theme song. The joke goes like this: "Where does the Lone Ranger take his trash?" When you answer the question, you're supposed to quickly sing a portion of The William Tell Overture and say, "To da dump, to da dump, to da dump, dump, dump!"
    I was always of the opinion, even as a kid, that the more bars you made the listener sit through, the better because annoying the listener is funnier for the joke teller.
    I've heard Phil reference the Lone Ranger joke in at least one interview when he was explaining his galloping bassline. He's joking that his bassline is basically just a groovy, funky, slowed down version of the Lone Ranger theme song, which is a section of the William Tell Overture.
    If you watch an old clip of the Lone Ranger opening theme song, the whole thing will make perfect sense. It's a lame and silly joke, but many old jokes were exactly that.

      I absolutely love this story. I never thought about that. On that amazing evening when I hung out with Phil Chen and he told my about the "To The Dump" I never thought of the Lone Ranger which makes perfect sense. I also grew up watching the Love Ranger. Loved it and the Overture. Thank you for the comment 🎸❤ Cant wait to use the joke too. Haha

      @JerryCherryBand You're very welcome. I'm glad that you liked the show and the theme song. Otherwise, my overly long explanation probably would've been wasted.
      Here's the video where Phil references the bassline and the Lone Ranger theme song joke. Based on the interviewer's lack of even a familiar chuckle, I'm pretty sure that he had no idea what the hell Phil was talking about, so the joke bombed. 😄
      You can skip to about 1:25 to hear Phil tell the joke and the inspiration for his famous bassline.

    When Do ya think came out, I doubt many were not in awe of the Bass lines. Another player I love is Abraham Laboriel. His lines on Donald Fagen's 'New Frontier' have always impressed. All the best from Sydney, Australia.

    Dude, - now I'm not even a musician, but I think you've got that bass line wrong, coz it ( the "To the dump" triple bit ) doesn't sound like it is made up of more than 1 note.

    • @JerryCherryBand
      @JerryCherryBand  2 года назад +1

      Listen closely to the record. You'll hear a tri-ple-let rhythm on the bass between every Kick drum and snare drum. Classic disco bass lick. To the Kick, to the snare, To The Dump.
