In this video I make a monochrome design. This is a design challenge for my online community, FlowerMore. Each month I make a inspo video for members to flex their design skills. We then share and talk about what we made. It's dope.
I did not use any foliage for this arrangement to keep the focus on the single color I chose - red. Because foliage can provide support I had to double up on my mechanics. I used both a frog and some chicken wire to keep all of the flowers in place.
Limiting my self in color makes other elements of the design crucial. Exaggerating the height variation of the stems is one way I created interest. I also scrutinized my selection of flowers focusing on shape, size and texture.
I started designing with the biggest flower in my arrangement - dahlias. Next I used sweet William underneath as a filler. It covered up the mechanics that would typically be the job of my foliage. I also added anemones, lilies and ranunculus.
For fun at the end I made heart out of red twig dogwood for Valentines Day.
