In this video I show you how to take your floral arrangement from amateur to pro with six techniques.
Technique One: Keep the leaves out of the vase. It's an amateur move not to clean your stems. Strip all leaves from the stems that are below the rim of the vase.
Technique Two: Design an arrangement that is in proportion to the vase. A good rule to follow is to make your arrangement approximately 1.5 times the size of the vase. If your vase is five inches tall, the total height of the arrangement should be about 12 inches.
Technique Three: Place elements at varying heights in your arrangement. This will create interest and visual appeal. Flowers at all the same height will look flat.
Technique Four: Use the six elements: foliage, line flowers, focal flowers, secondary flowers, filler flowers, and bits and pieces. See my video on this topic.
Technique Five: Consider how your arrangement will be viewed. Design for all vantage points. It is common mistake for beginners to design from one perspective. Pay equal attention to the entire arrangement and design for the space it will occupy.
Technique Six: Know when you are done. It can be hard to know when an arrangement is complete. Often amateurs will overstuff a vase. Don't crowd your flowers. Let them shine.
