Hi Jon, what can you say about an engine with that detail, just enjoy it and do the best job possible on its painting. As for 3D, it is the future in the world of modelling, I think that a printer in the future will be part of the elements, just as the compressor is. Greetings friend and until the next video.
Hi Jon. I have a couple of 3D printed Armory R-985 Wasp Juniors for a 1/48 Beechcraft Model 18 (ICM- Revell's edition) with East Caribbean Airways markings. The detail, as with your engine, is great. I've used some 3D printed parts and as you say, the removal of the pieces from the stubs is much easier. Some 3D printed vehicle tyres for an armoured car I built just snapped off the little pins with a twist - no dust! Just came back from the Australian Model Expo in Melbourne (800ish km) with a friend. Really good. Got some models. Got Covid. (not badly, like a head cold). Rats. 🙂 Home again and recovering, in the shed. However, there are advantages to this. Started Aoshima Thunderbird 1 in 1/144, will finish ICM I-16, Hobby Boss IAR -80 at primer stage. Proceeding slowly on ICM's Packard Twelve (the body shell is split straight through the middle = long, weak seam. Added a styrene sheet headliner for reinforcement). Still thinking about what to do about that P-51B with the botched decals. There's a Italeri 1/35 Carro Armarto L6/40 on the go too. Model On! Cheers Matt 🦘🦘🦘 PS. My Expo bargains were Meng 1/48 Me410 b-2/U2/R4 for 75AUD (49USD) and a 1/35 Dragon M7 Priest for 45AUD (30USD). Happy! Keen to see the improved Academy Thunderbolt.
That's awesome, Matt! Thanks for sharing. It sounds like we have similar interests in kits. You gotta love the lesser-built subjects as well as the common ones. Enjoy your time off. Cheers!
Jon, what an incredible looking engine, I'm anxious to check it out but more anxious to see how in the world could you paint all that detail. A few videos ago I tried to send you some links and information but could never get them through. I think i figured out the problem. I use my vintage tablet to watch videos and consume coffee on Saturday mornings. I can't cut and paste. However, I think i fianally figured out the problem on my desktop Not only is RUclips a bit crazy with its algorithms the desktop won't let me edit something from my tablet. I think i solved the problem and will test it at a later date. However back to the engine, this kind of detail would definitely allow building a super detailed kit. Do ya plan a follow-up of how to finish out all that detail? Cheers Bob
Good day from Az!! Showin' how ta up the game one step at a time. Nice. Starts to make a heavily detailed project less impending and break it into short straight forward steps. And Jon, ya be showing that, it ain't as intimidating as one might think!! One new trick, in the black magic bag, at a time. But as a scratch builder, this 3d thing worries me. As a scratch builder, the precision of printed detail would be so time consuming to do scratch there is no comparison. Fewer people scratch building, and I understand why. And as such the demand for raw stock has fallen quite a bit over the last 30 years. There used to be a great selection of milled wood and brass structure stock. "Shapes" as they were called. I beams, Z beams, H beams and so on. Now gone. I still have some wood and brass left. On the whole I can see only good things that will come from the 3d printer. Foremost, the expansion of subjects is almost unheard of. All subjects, planes, boats, trains, buildings, and so on. Never been so many available! Video's like Jon's, will keep the model world as a whole moving forward and expanding. Showing us how to use the parts and make it enjoyable! Take care ta all, and............................................... MODEL ON!!!!!!
Thanks, Jeff! I still enjoy scratch building details and use spare parts and styrene sheet, strip, and rod to improve the kits in small ways. But with the 3D printed parts, the sky's the limit with what can be done. Cheers!
I’ve not used 3d aftermarket on any of the kits ; however I have used resin, but never an engine. How is the quality of the plastic versus the plastic of the kit you’re mounting this to? Is this easier to work with than resin? Either way It’s going to look great with all that detail!
The plastic on the engine seems a little more brittle than the kit plastic. So, modifying the kit parts seems like the route to go. It was MUCH easier to remove from the backing than a resin pour stub. And 1 part vs. 20 delicate resin parts gets my vote. Also, it isn't nearly as delicate as a completed resin radial. We'll see how it reacts to glue. The only difficulty will be painting it.

I do plan to do a how-to video on painting it. I'm just trying to plan out the process first. Cheers!
