Crazy an English song could sound so quintessentially American, played on an African instrument in the middle of the woods for an invisible audience who are all listening at different times. We live in a harsh crazy world but there's still so much beauty
thank u for btful comment. People are divided by cynicism and exhaustion, but hearts can still unite the second they Feel. Like when we listen together on YT
Old British folk music is one of my favorite genres. The Appalachian nuance imbuing the tune is so enchanting, especially in the haunting beauty of the woods. This clip was a wonderful escape.
@@paddyladdie. Agreed! 😊The version from Radie Peat & Daragh Lynch is lovely. The British folk rock band Steeleye Span does a delightful version as well.
Beautiful performance thank you. Songs like these make me feel connected to those unnumbered women who have lived before us. They have loved the same ways we do.
Fantastic hearty voice full of character. It’s difficult to create something really worth recording with such simplicity as a banjo and voice alone, but your voice has such easy and natural character that it carries the whole tune on its own. This would not be out of place on a record between fully orchestrated tracks. Fantastic!!
Your contention is absurd. The unaccompanied human voice is the basis of all string and reed instruments. The greatest instrumentalists are "singing". As for performance, small children make up songs every day. It's as human as it gets.
Lately, several of these have been showing up on my feed.I love it.Usually the artists are these incredible young women with bone chilling rawness. All very talented.Altho I have no direct connection to this region or these lineages, the appeal is definitely universal.Btw,my demographics: Polish Seattle -ite😂❤😮😊❤
Bagpipe playing medieval beekeepers?? That sounds like something I absolutely have to see, like, yesterday! Could you pass on a link or a channel name please?
Great cover as usual. I was first introduced to this song by the Shirley Collins/Davy Graham version and was just struck by how it sounded so beautifully timeless and how it felt like I've heard it all my life despite not first hearing it for decades
O Lordy , I can't think of any type of music that stirs my soul more than an old English melancholy folk ballad/lament ,beautifully sung and masterfully played on the banjo🥺😭.Rosie, thank you ever so much for giving me pleasure-goosebumps 🙏🍀.
Thank you for sharing this, I find myself coming back to it a lot when I get too overwhelmed by like… everything and I just need to take a few minutes to breathe. You created a lovely atmosphere.
I'm so glad this was recommended to me. This song has always intrigued me - it has queer undertones to me that I don't think were intentional, but resonate nonetheless. Plus the general feminism throughout has always been inspiring given the age of the piece. One of my favorite folk songs, and your rendition is beautiful :)
Incredibly beautiful track and I love how you played this in the woods! ^_^ The melody incorporated into the banjo playing is such a wonderful touch as well :3
I've been a listener for a long time, and it's just so great to see you play one of my favorite folk tunes. Great work, and thanks so much for performing it!
This is wonderful. Very nice playing and just a real beautiful enchanting piece of, as I would describe it is guess as best I can for the non expert which I am, "mountain [Appalacian] music". Thank you so much for sharing your music. I would like to ask if I may, what is the name of that particular banjo?
@@roughhouserosie this much later version gives the story a whole other edge, sung by Shirley Collins as a crone in her much later years, it has an incredible depth to it This is the version that made me want to try and play it on the banjo, your telling is beautiful also ruclips.net/video/LrQK0Gg4Aw0/видео.html
What I should have said was "Besides seeing where the influence for Tyler Childer's 'Rock Salt and Nails' comes from, this song connects me to all the longing hearts that have ever existed and will ever exist. Those hearts are inevitable, like the winter of the human soul. It reminds me of the fifth grade me who dreamt that love was the most magical thing in life--until discovering its crushing, unrequited element. It reminds me of Catherine of Aragon whose husband despised her. The girl at the end of the song who'd rather focus on her schooling is me right now, worn down and discouraged by pursuits of love, finding hope elsewhere. Thanks, Rosie."
Love this! Your playing is lovely and the autumnal environment around you adds perfectly. I think you could do a great rendition of old black train by the blasting company!
@ yeah! It’s a song that means a lot to me because I found it at a difficult time in my life, I love how folk music continues to influence even now ^u^

Glad I could provide an escape. Thank you!
I love how folk music can change depending on where folk are from. There's an Irish version of this by Radie Peat and David Lynch.

i wish i was a bunny in that forest, i’d sit down, watch patiently, and enjoy the show

Oh, this is the song titled “Blackbirds and Thrushes” in my old British folk music book. It sounds wonderful. Thanks.
it's actually interesting because this song goes by a lot of names, there's a whole wiki page dedicated to it
I know it has Hares on the Mountain
Folk tunes morph by design. Folk music is different vibrations produced by all kinds of folk !
This is one of the most beautiful things ive ever seen both the sound and the imagery. It almost looks like a beautiful moving painting

It matches those woods perfectly.
The algorithm has clearly blessed me today. first the bagpipe playing medieval beekeepers, and now a wonderfully skilled banjo player!
