  • A short drive from Peniche is Obidos - where you will find one of the finest examples of a Portuguese walled town.
Due to it's proximity to Lisbon, Obidos is fast becoming one of the most popular tourist day trip destinations of the region and can fluctuate between busy and empty in a single day. The ancient town walls encircling the historic centre of Obidos remain surprisingly intact. and the top of these walls can be walked providing a scenic and peaceful way to see the town from above.
Considering the consistent foul weather we had our hopes up for Nazaré - the setting for some of the world’s largest waves, which in winter can reach over 30m. Powerful Atlantic Ocean waves are channelled through the Nazaré Canyon - Europe’s largest underwater canyon - to create massive waves taller than buildings. In the winter, fearless surfers come to surf these mammoth waves, with events attracting over 100,000 spectators.
After leaving Nazare the heavens opened - again - and we just kept driving north until we found the summer resort town of Praia da Vieira which is nestled between the river Lis and the ancient pine forest of Pinhal de Leiria. To the south of the town the beach stretches off for several kilometres with a backdrop of low sand dunes and pine forest. It's still home to a traditional population of fishermen, who are dedicated to their daily tasks of going out to sea early in each morning.
Although we were hoping to visit Figueira da Foz the relentless rain forced us further north to the gorgeous Praia da Costa Nova - just south of Aveiro. The most picturesque aspect of Costa Nova is its coastal road along which a line of wooden huts is painted in brightly coloured stripes alternating with white. Originally built by fishermen as shelters and equipment stores, the huts have now been converted into rather characteristic holiday homes.

Thank you! The key would be to get your own motorhome or van to travel Europe affordably. Hope to see you on the road soon! 😎

Very brave of you to walk that wall, especially considering your fear of heights! 👏😘 Definitely would not have tempted me!

It was well worth pushing myself to do, such incredibly stunning views and a great (albeit not all together relaxing) experience!

Wow, we loved Obidos, I even bought a very expensive ceramic bowel in one of those cute shops. Perhaps next time we will walk on that wall🙈
Please don't tease us with those natas😭😋 I am not going to hit the like button😉
My daughter is starting to rate the natas🤭
You will have to tell us where you had the best pastel de nata.
    Beautiful video as always👌
    Thanks 🤩

There's definitely no shortage of cute little shops in Obidos to tempt ones pocket 😋 The best pastel de nata? Consistently the 'artisanal' ones - still warm it's so fresh - were great. It's really that crust that makes all the difference. The ones from Obidos were pretty good actually but if you're in Lisbon the standard is high everywhere. The very best we've had was in Sagres. It was made by a lady who sold it in the local market and our camping neighbour brought us some when he visited the market. Now go smash that like button! 😆😆

Again, you inspire, out on a trip in Europe. Interesting with all history, what we humans have built through the ages. Very nice drone videos. The sport you do is also popular in Brazil, I have visited Jericoacoara in Brazil several times, there are many who do the same sport as you two do. Have a good trip.

That town was beautiful but what a terrifying experience on the wall! I'm not sure if it would have been a good or bad idea to have one of those cherry liquers before.....

We might have walked much faster after a couple of liqueurs! Or not at all. 😂

Been there more than once and walked around those walls. Loved Obidos. BTW, I lived in South Africa for 10 years, I'm pretty sure you are South African but is Lisa SA too?

We still want to go back and check the Óbidos lagoon one day. Apparently it's great for kitesurfing. And Yes you're on to us! We're both from SA and spent most of the last 20 years in Stellenbosch!

@@WeWillNomad your accent is 100 percent South African, I guess you are Afrikaans but Lisa's accent is not as strong. I lived in Bonaero Park, behind and near the old Jan Smuts airport now known as OR Tambo. I left in 1985 and have never been back and unfortunately never visited the Stellenbosch area.
