He went to Muslim school as a Christian is my take on this. It is common in the south western Nigeria. I see his knowledge to be of that quality; never have prostrated to Allah in his life as a Muslim. I doubt it.

I've seen Nigerians claiming to be muslim and never pray, fast, drink alcohol and carry European names too. Clearly that's a clear indication of being disbelief. My work colleague complains about his "Nigerian muslim" team mate who keep boasting about his love for alcohol and says is OK to drink as muslim, A'uudu Billaah.

if some of my relatives or friends are muslims and i don't know the basics of islam that does not make me muslim! a person who does not know there is no rak'as in surat al-fatiha, a person who can't recite atihiyat can't claim that he was a muslim.
This is common in Nigeria, i have a friend here in nigeria, the Dad is a muslim while the mum is a christian the children are confused which to practice, they might be muslims today the next day they become Christian too, this is usually common with the yorubas....
So the guy was a non practicing muslim before converting to Christianity, i am sure the guy is yoruba by tribe.
