Brixham is a fishing town and civil parish in the district of Torbay in Devon, in the south-west of England. Brixham is at the southern end of Torbay, across the bay (Tor Bay) from Torquay, and fishing and tourism are the major industries of the town. This Brixham guide video will hopefully show you all you need to know about this beautiful part of Devon.
It is thought that the name 'Brixham' came from Brioc's village. 'Brioc' was an old English or Brythonic personal name and '-ham' is an ancient term for home derived from Old English.
Brixham is hilly and built around the harbour which remains in use as a dock for fishing trawlers. It has a focal tourist attraction in the replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship Golden Hind that is permanently moored there. I thought it was the famous Brixham Pirate Ship that is one of the main features of the Brixham Pirate Festival that takes place here every May.
Historically, Brixham was two separate communities with only a marshy lane to connect them. Cowtown was the area on top of the hill where the farmers lived, while a mile away around the harbour was Fishtown where the fishermen and seamen lived.
Cowtown, the St Mary's Square area, is on the road leaving Brixham to the south west, in the direction of Kingswear, upon which stands a church built on the site of a Saxon original. The town holds a yearly pirate event which competes for the title of most pirates in one place and this draws visitors from far and wide.
King William III landed in England at Brixham on 5 November 1688 on his way to become king as part of the Glorious Revolution.
Picture-postcard coves, exotic palm trees, a serene coastline and an iconic replica ship are just some of the things that give Brixham so much character. Situated in the southern corner of Torbay opposite Torquay, this attractive South Devon fishing town offers visitors a wealth of things to do, from riveting historical attractions to laid-back golf courses, a range of arts and culture and excellent local food. The town is a key part of the English Riviera and home to a UNESCO Global Geopark (one of only seven in the UK).
Brixham Pirate Festival
The annual Brixham Pirate Festival usually takes place over the early May Bank Holiday, and is known for its world record attempts, live music, free entertainment and for filling Brixham with pirates. The festival is a very large event in the town, with hundreds of residents viewing the festival yearly.
Cobbled streets and pastel-coloured fishermen’s houses cascade down to the bustling harbour where you will find traditional shops showcasing locally made souvenirs, crafts and foods. One of the busiest fishing ports in the UK, life in Brixham is centred around this picturesque harbour.

what camera you filmed with here? :)
Thank you so much. Spent many family holidays here with my dear husband Dave who loved to go fishing. Still looks vibrant
It's just fantastic isn't it!
A lovely tour, with no background music or talk, just some quiet script, easy to read, and very informative. Wish they were all like this!
Thank you for a wonderfull video ... I live in West Australia and was last in Brixham watching the fireworks for Diana's Royal Wedding in July 1981... I was only 19 then and now it feels like I have just re-visited with all the happy memories flooding back.
I would love to have a few pints in some of those quirky little pubs that you passed along the way and I would love to be 19 again too!!
Picturesque south Devon is heaven by the seaside . Has everything , i have spent many a time enjoying its beauty .
So true!
Hi thank you for sharing this great video. We are just back home from staying in this beautiful place. Those stairs we climbed up and down everyday. There is 99 steps. Love watching this as I have withdrawal symptoms already. Thank you.
You're welcome- thanks for subscribing or watching my channel!
We have been coming to Brixham since the earlier 1970s later a couple of times a year June for the Trawler Race around the bay and September where we met some friends sitting outside the Crown & Anchor what a great place to sit have a drink and people watch. We were here on the 10th May 2021 it was the worst weather we have ever had rained every day for 14 days.
On no Brian!! nightmare!!
Loved every second of the tour around Brixham
One of my favourite places now
I have always lived in Brixham. Never had the urge to live anywhere else. The harbour is just a part of it, if you walk out to Berry Head and keep going around to Sharkeham and mudstone beach and st marys bay and then onto mansands beach and then on to kingswear. Miles of lovely coastline.
Did you know Anzio Joe from up north? originally from Sheffield but went down there from Fleetwood, he died in the year 2000
Been here many times absolutely love Brixham. My kids loved going and now we have taken our grandson he loved it
Not surprised - lovely place!
Visited this place in June of this year, I found out my dad died here in the year 2000. I found it to be mesmerizing and just seeing your video for the first time as braught back some wonderful memories.
Hi, This is the one i have been so looking forward to. It'll bring back so many lovely memories of when i visited with my late mother. We had a lovely time. Thank you for posting.
Hope you enjoy it!
Watching these bring back many wonderful memories. I'm British but now live in California. Been here for over 20 years. We used to holiday in Devon and Cornwall a lot and miss them dearly. They are such a unique locations and there is no where else in the world like them. Please keep up your wonderful postings. Love them and have subscribed. Thank you for your hard work.
Thank you so much
Am so jealous of you living in California though! I’d love to go there one day!
Nah California ain't as quaint or as unique as Devon! Oooooarrr
Brixham is a beautiful place been there many times lots of happy memories
Well said - totally agree - fab place!
I have Relatives live here. Used to have school holidays here. Lovely place.
It really is!
Hi there I visited only last week but the day was rainy and overcast not a good time visit such a beautiful place.I also have childhood memories of the place my parents took me and my brother and sister here.It looks beautiful the day you visited.

It is - such a lovely lovely place
My wife's cousin lives there, we visit when we can, lives on Overgang with stunning views over the harbour, it's always such a joy to visit.

We’re off to South Devon in July. Will be our first visit, Brixham is now definitely on our list!
Ah great - that's the best feedback for me. If I can show people places and they go then I'm real happy!
What a pretty town, would love to emigrate from the Netherlands and live out the rest of my life there
I'm moving to torquay in February ready for summer. Leaving everything behind.
Born and raised in brixham my grandad had a fishing boat and my grandmother use to sell seafood on the quay
. alan prince
Great stuff!
What a lovely little place it is Judi!
Did you know Anzio Joe from up North?
Yes, I agree Brixham looks a
Lovely place, so much to look at.
Thank you for filming.
You’re welcome Beryl!
Thanks for watching!
It's such a lovely place, I went around 16 years ago. That 'pirate boat' is a replica of The Golden Hind, a galleon captained by Sir Frances Drake.
I feel such an idiot ha ha
I saw the blokes dressed as pirates and assumed it was a pirate ship! 🤣🤣
hi i am not so sure the golden hinde was a pirate ship, we have a proper replica here in london and no one states its a pirate ship.
@@GimbalWalkTV At least you admitted it. Not really your fault anyhow. Our national history is so badly taught these days - in fact badly taught for decades. In my day (schoolboy in the '50s and early '60s) everyone knew the story of Drake and the Golden Hind. Also that Drake defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588 (with the help of some other good admirals, and winds that favoured us). AND we had to be able to recite every King and Queen of England in the correct order, from Ethelred the Unready up to Queen Elizabeth II. I learned that list by heart in 1953, the year of the Queen's coronation, when I was 7. Now I'm 75, the Queen is still on the throne, just had her 95th birthday, and looks in better shape than me! Doesn't even need a walking stick (unlike me).
My daughter & son-in-law own the Golden Hind. Another great walk is away from the harbour along to the Brixham Marina and out to the breakwater.
The Golden hind was the Ship that drake often took command off during his life time
Love the coloured buildings 😊👍
Us too!
What a wonderful video of Brixham, and I am so lucky to live here. Thank you for showing what a lovey place it is.
Thank you Rod - its a lovely place you have there it really is stunning!
Did you ever bump into a Sheffield man called Anzio Joe Roberts?
@@paulroberts6408 Sorry no.
For some reason I decided to look up Brixham because it's the town where William III's landing happened, I wanna visit there now any advice?
I want to visit this area greetings from Scotland 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 it’s scenery is beautiful
I wouldn’t it’s a shithole
You should!
Indeed so beautiful
A wonderful walk around a beautiful town and harbour ,thank you so much for your video ,sunshine and blue skies, gorgeous
I love Brixham.
Same!
I do recommend when in Brixham walk to battery gardens and fishcombe cove nice little cafe wonderful food
What a wonderful tour round loved it ❤️ thanks 😊
Our pleasure!
Glad to see you in devon and cornwall love your walks keep it up x
Thank you Aimee!
Another great video thanks 👍 keep on walking 🚶🏻
Thank you!
Just came across this. We are actually coming to Brixham at the end of the month. So looking forward to it. Been 4 times before and cant stop coming back. One of my favourite places. Its our first holiday since the whole COVID thing kicked off so this one is quite special for us
Oh you're going to have the BEST time I think!
What a lovely place to choose and fall in love with
This was my first time there and I felt the same!
Can't wait to go back!
Pearl blakeley
What a great video lovely weather and the harbour looks fantastic
Thanks for the video keep safe 🙏👍🤗🍦💐
Thank you Pearl!
What a lovely day to wander around Brixham harbour, so much to see in this beautiful area. The Ernie Lister Bar at the (pink) Quayside Hotel in King Street at the start of the video holds the Guinness World Record for the longest running musical residency / band, sadly brought to an abrupt end by the pandemic in 2020.
Ah no - sorry to hear that
Great record to hold though!
Beautiful! Very well done! Visited often with my late Mum. We love it. ❤️
Thank you so much - lovely place!
Can see why your mum loved it so much!
Its so beautiful here and everyone we met was amazing. We will be going back again soon xxxx
Well said! Lovely place!
I also live in Brixham done since 86 from Eastend of London ,this place has changed and surround area's over the years since i've been here .
It's just a shame that so many things have been cancelled because of current situation ,but maybe next year Pirate festival will be back along with so many other things .
Under the old fish market they have live music on where the main quay is shut down to traffic so that pedestrians can roam and party in the road ,a great atmosphere to be when live bands play .
Oh I bet that’s amazing!
Do you think the pirate festival is back soon?
@@GimbalWalkTV I'm hoping it will be back next year as its usually May when the town comes alive with hundreds of pirates .
Did you ever bump into a Sheffield man called Anzio Joe Roberts?
Had some great holidays in the 1970s when I was a youth Happy days.
Beautiful place very nostalgic me and my late wife used to visit here very friendly people nice atmosphere!
The best!
I look forward to visiting this place🤩Thanks for sharing 🙌
My pleasure 😊
Brixham still looks pretty much the same since I first went there in about 1965. Loads of character.
So true
I love Brixham . I use to come every year due to my uncle use to own a bungalow here but passed away so we had to sell ii. I haven’t been since around 2012 and it hasn’t changed much. I was around 15 when I last came. Would love to come back. I sure have missed it !
It's lovely to hear the gulls, at various points. Don't get to hear them much, here in London.
I bet! Do you even get gulls in London?
you would`nt want to hear them if they were fighting on your flat roof waking you up at 3 a m
Very well filmed. Love Torquay (most of it anyway). It’s much improved over the last 5 years, better restaurants and greater investment in the town. Good to see the town promoted positively, rather than people whingeing. I live in Torquay, by the way, so have witnessed the good changes in recent years.
Well said
Torquay is (I’m really sad to say) easily number one for locals whingeing about where they live and the council etc
Wonderful - went down last weekend was lovely - I’ll be back ❤️
Excellent video. I was down in Brixham recently, but didn't't see this part of town. Next time I go, I will definitely visit this side.
Although it's currently closed for refurb, Shoalstone pool is free to use as outdoor tidal pool if you continue on king Street, over the small roundabout and follow the road to Berry head. There is parking but will need to pay to park there however it is worth it! Pool is nippy as water is from the sea but refreshing on a hot day especially with a nice little cafe for drinks, snacks and ice cream
Ooh thank you Siobhan - didnt' know that. I headed up that way after filming but not far enough I don't think (got distracted into a barbers shop!)
Me and my family used to go to brixham 1 or 2 times a year when I was a kid and being from Liverpool it was a hike but we just loved it , now I have my own family , me , my fiancée and our three daughters and I take them here now and they love it , we were there three weeks ago and had the best holiday , I just love the place , we have already booked for two weeks next year , great video 👍
Was you there on the weekend of 6th and 7th of June? Because I remember bumping into a couple of Scousers with 3 daughters
@@paulroberts6408 yes we were haha
Seeing Brixham brought memories of day trips from Torquay holidays. Love to go back. Marie
Lovely isn't it Marie!
I think this must be the first tour of Brixham that I have seen that hasn't mentioned it's fishing heritage. It was the largest fishing port in Devon and fishermen from here populated the towns of Ramsgate and Hull as they followed the fish. The 'market' area was once the fish market and it landed more fish than anywhere else in the country.
Yes, my paternal grandparents families were both from here and they were fishermen, boat builders and basket-makers. Thankfully the town hasn't gone completely 'Padstow' on us.
Place I would love to see a film of is Westward Ho! in North Devon.
Westward Ho sounds exciting!
Sorry for not mentioning the fishing - it slipped my mind as I was editing!
I will be visiting Paignton in April and I will be coming to Brixham for the day
Great video, we go,down there at least once a year, and stay in cottages, around the harbour and spend a fortune in the shops there and the surrounding towns, And of course Trago !
We used to holiday here back in the early 90s at wall park pontins. Best holidays ever.
I can imagine! Good fun eh!
As someone who actually lives in Brixham it's nice to see it in a positive light, I'm too used to being one of "them locals" who complains about everything to do with living here. Puts things into perspective. Great video :)
Complains?? the facts dont lie about torbay 2nd highest divorce rate 3rd highest single mums no1 for suicide no1 for alcoholism and 6m budget overspend on socail services and living in brixham u pay more council tax than paignton or torquay due to brixham having its own Council
Everywhere I go you hear the same complaints from the people that live there about how bad it is, how my videos aren't showing the real place, and the biggest (and funniest) one is how the council have ruined the place
Literally the same exact messages from people who live there moaning, whinging, complaining and crying about the place they live
Me?
I go places with an open mind, see what I see and not what i WANT to see, and put it on video for everyone to have a look at
I don't listen to the negative people - they're just that - negative
Thank you for the kind words about the video - much appreciated - stay happy and stay positive!
There was nothing negative in the comments there facts its ok to show lovely videos of brixham and torbay but its not all roses and chocolates lpvely in the summer when the suns out but in the cold wet winter its miserable not my words larry grayson who thought the grass was greenerc
@@jamiemacdonald9030 But again - that's what I get told by everyone who lives in every single town and city that I film - almost word for word!
Yh its just like most towns theres deprived places n some nice places at least in bham we got great scenery to grow up in
Oh Dear! Better wear a hat my friend. You don't want sun stroke. Great video walk, thanks. I love Brixham.
Thanks for watching
Definitely need a hat now for walks!
Visited a year ago, and my family are there right now.
Nice! Lovely place!
I really want to be there. It’s my favourite place. We hope to move there eventually. So glad you walked us around 😁🌞
Anytime Karen - such a lovely little place isn't it!
Something magical about Brixham - pirate festival be back 2022
Hopefully Selina!
Many years ogo l and my wife went on holiday to brixham.first class. There as an old fisherman on the front who used to tout for buissiness calling out Brixham boat for tourists to go on trips. We went on this trip and it was a delight. If you go to torque ( wrong spelling) take the trip you will enjoy it. Lovely memories.
Lovely memories - happy times eh!
Very nice walk. Thank you.
Thanks Gail! 👍👍❤️
You have to be fit to live in Brixham, them streets are mighty steep. Gorgeous place though.
ha ha very true Bill!!
I live in Brixham (Cow Town) and at the top of the hill. Marvellous views of Torbay but hard on old bones!
Love brixham so much to see and do
Very true Mike!
Nice video of my home town. :) you missed quite a few gems on your way down though. Would be awesome if you knew a bit of the history or special places like coffin shop you passed or the pirate ship is actually the golden hind, sir Frances Drake's ship, although a mock up. Going upto the Battery gardens or Berry head fort would of been cool too. Also missed one of Brixhams characters at 8:47, Bouncy Pete. You normally can hear him first. He has a fleet of small boats and is a regular user of our brilliant coast guard service. :)
Thank you Tim!
I'll be back to film an updated video with some more information for sure so will use those nuggets that you contributed - thank you my friend!
Neil
@@GimbalWalkTV awesome walk throughs. Such a great idea for potencial holidays. :)
@@aTiminCambodia ah thank you!!
Great to see this! Brixham is one of our favourite holiday spots abroad. We first ‘landed’ there on a hot day whilst staying in Dartmoor (2013 or 2014), for a splash in the Shoalstone Pool. We’ve been back for two week holidays in summer since, a couple of times, in accommodation near ‘Overgang’, so all in the film is very familiar to us. Unfortunately, last year’s holiday got cancelled (for obvious reasons), but we’re hoping to be back in the not too distant future.
Beautiful
We have always found Brixham to be very difficult to park so have never attempted to stay for long!
Oh yes - very tricky to drive to. I got the ferry over from Torquay!
Thanks for sharing and recreating wonderful memories for me x
Our pleasure!
Another fantastic video of BRIXHAM DEVON from Brixham Harbour and Pirate Ship to the seafront and ferry!.😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Thank you!
Just booked our family holiday at Brixham Holiday Park in four weeks time. Never been to Devon before, looking forward to it. Hopefully lots to do, especially for kids. Please recommend surrounding places to visit whilst at Brixham, either by car or other transport. Thanks for the excellent video.
Oh well you’re going to love it!
Definitely you have to head to the harbour and take all the boat trips!!
Best Fish and Chips, love Brixham

I visited Brixham quite a few years ago but it was a dull rainy day and I didn't see it at it's best. Your video shows just how lovely a place it really is. Thanks for that. I remember we visited Torquay and Paignton as well - a really nice part of the country - looking forward to your Torquay walk tomorrow.
Thank you Ian!
I really enjoyed filming this one - and the Torquay one that is live tomorrow too!
What a lovely place been Torquay a few times going to newton abbot in July

hi never been to brixham it looks a nice place will try and visit it some time
You should!
Really want to visit Brixham but just not confident as a driver due to having my confidence severely knocked. I am a photographer and the opportunities in this part of the country are amazing.
Been to Newquay as a kid on holiday, Torquay, Teignmouth for holidays as a kid and a teen, Paignton for a bike event, Plymouth, Exeter, but for some reason I really have a pull to come here.....
I visited Brixham back in the 1970s and there used to be loads of artists on the sea front ,where have they all gone.
Ah not sure - It was my first time so never got to see those
they work upstairs in the building opposite to where they used to work,i`m surprised you did`nt see the place, you can walk up the stairs and watch the artist at work it`s free.
brilliant vid. my friend has just come back yesterday
Used to take my late wife there every year. We both loved Brixham. Once said to the chippy owner in the harbour "Not far to go for your fish pal" to which he replied "Ours comes from Hull mate". 🤔
WHAAAATTT!!!!
That' should be illegal!! 🤣
I'll be there well I'm staying at paignton in 2weeks time can't wait hope the weather stays nice
