Type 5 here-I found a career as a medical coder so my entire job revolves around me reading medical records and learning about medical conditions, and the treatments and procedures for these conditions...plus-I get to work from home ALONE. lol. And what do I do in my downtime??? Read-and not novels of course, it’s non-fiction, textbooks, etc. so I can learn more.

I am so glad you mentioned that we like to work behind closed doors. I am a law student and our professors keep recommending study groups, but I HATE study groups. I feel it sucks all the energy out of me and stresses me when I can't go at my own pace or am interrupted in my "study flow".

As a “high 5”, I can confirm this is an accurate description of a type 5. A conversation at the office with too many personal details is “exhausting”. A type 5 wants to get the job done, and talk about personal stuff after office hours. I guess this is part of setting boundaries.

I'm a 5w4 INTP. I relate to almost all of this. I don't relate to the minimalism. I have a large room in the basement of my house and it is filled with all of my things: books, records, models, crafts, musical instruments, hobbies...all of the things I like to entertain myself with. The walls are covered with posters and photos and art that I like. I have post-its everywhere with quotes I like and things I want to remember every day. No matter where I am, I must have a space like this where there is a door that can be closed and other people are not allowed. I was like this as a child, and still am in my mid-40s.

"they don't like unwanted attention". I guess that summarizes the whole idea of what a type 5 is. I'm a type 5 and, even though I LOVE being involved in the decision-making processes, every time any sort of attention is required is consumes energy. Because we observe everything around us, energy managing becomes vital.
Attention means that we need to direct time (which is the MOST precious thing for 5) towards something that'll be exhausting somehow.
The video is SO accurate btw! Thank you for sharing with us! =]

Speaking as a five... You are so very right about the closed door working style. And no, it is definitely not ok to stop by to "chat". If the conversation doesn't have a purpose it may never end! I agree that clear expectations are important in every area of life for a five.
Thanks for this video. A big part of my learning the Enneagram is to improve professional relationships. I can see how you have to put yourself out there for other people to feel comfortable with you. Plenty of people have compared me to a robot when it comes to work, not the most relatable/approachable.

Oh. My. God. I had no idea I was such a type 5!!! At work I keep one headphone out/in to make sure I don’t miss anything but I’m usually in my own zone and get so annoyed when people interrupt me or break my concentration 😂 it’s taken practice to breathe and allow distraction and even breaks at work because I get so into “work mode.” But that means I also burn out quicker definitely. I’m actually just coming out of a little recharge/hermit phase right now 😅 also about giving them time to process? Wow that’s taken so long for me to figure out. When I feel put on the spot with a question I can get so overwhelmed, even if it’s not a necessarily difficult one.

I just found out a week ago about the enneagram. I took an assessment and it was determined that I am a type 5. I have to say I have taken personality assessments my whole life and they’ve helped in that they mentioned things about me. But this one here has me spot on. After the assessment I honestly felt...yes felt, like I finally had an answer. I understand now why being alone soothes me. Why I need a nap after an exhausted day of dealing with ppl. Why I hate small talk. This was the best thing I could learn about myself and in doing so I’m now equipped with what I need to get along better in this intrusively awkward world and it’s ppl. Thanks for the insight. I would have loved to have known about this sooner in life but as they say when the student is ready the teacher will appear.

Every time I took different Enneagram tests, my two highest numbers were always 4 and 5, but when I read the description of 4 I definitely felt that to be stronger. Regardless, I still see many of the type 5 characteristics within myself -I have such a desire to explore knowledge and go deep into how things work, but the reason I know I'm a 4 is that my emotions get in the way of being able to solely focus on the task at hand - I start imbuing my emotions into the task. I can go very deep into both my emotional and rational/objective side, but the emotional side USUALLY wins. I also enjoy doing things alone and being completely independent, but I think that's also a quality of type 4. But one of the things about type 5 that I relate to the most is watching and observing - I wait until I have sufficient information before doing anything.

This was SO ACCURATE. I actually don't mind people dropping by my desk, BUT as a 5, I prefer they do as much as they can to solve the problem first before asking me how to do something. Probably goes with valuing independence for myself and in others. And YES YES YES to alone time. Even as a kid, my family would ask me to come downstairs because I'd spend hours just reading and recharging in my room.

It’s so true that I work for a long time under covers before producing any visible results. This gives an impression to my superiors that I’m just slacking off, whereas, in reality, I’m constantly working on the task. I know a possible solution is to keep giving updates on my work progress to my superior, but I dislike the idea of showcasing incomplete work; and it also leaves a chance for them to influence or bring changes to the plan I originally had for finishing the task. I dislike that too. I’m open to accepting changes after I’ve at least completed a prototype of the task at hand, it might be my ego, or my perfectionist nature. It might also be due to my independent nature.

I might be a little odd in that I love talking to people, about anything, whatever the person wants to talk about, it used to drain me in the past but now I look at it as a learning experience, a chance for me to understand people more, which most of us 5’s aren’t great with people.

In regards to the "I think" statements, I personally tend to go back and forth between "I think" and "I feel" statements depending on the situation. Perhaps this is a 5w4 thing which I believe I am. I use "I think" when I'm near positive/positive about something. These things are usually more factual things and info. I use "I feel" in matters of the heart, emotions, obscurity, open-ended things, or personal opinions. Often the "I feel"s are followed by noncommittal words/phrases such as: perhaps, maybe, in some cases, it could be, sometimes, etc. I would wish people to take "I feel"s with a grain of salt and not necessarily hold me to those statements just in case something goes wrong or I change my point of view (after new info comes to light). I suppose it's a protection thing. Gotta cover the a**! Hehe

I don't know if I'm a type 5 per say, but most of this (like +90% of this) is very accurate concerning how I work and think. RUclips was the one who decided that I'm a type 5. I've been watching a million "What does being called an INTP mean?" videos last month and just discovered there was this thing called an enneagram last week. All it took were two searches: "What is an enneagram? and "How would I know what enneagram type I am?". Now my feed is populated with type 5 videos. If I'm not an enneagram 5, then I have once again broken the youtube algorithm thanks to my curiosity and from experience, it'll take months to repair the damage.😂

Hi, I’m fairly new to the whole enneagram thing but SO many dots have been connected since I started learning more about it. I use to think I was broken or something because I don’t get attached to people easily. And I absolutely despise working in a group with people who do not put in the proper level of work needed! I would rather just do it myself.

I love that you said to give a five time to respond or to give them notice. I have noticed for myself that if someone gives me a plan for example today let’s go shopping or go out to dinner or something at a certain time I can plan in my head to be OK to do that with whoever has asked me to do it. But I cannot just on the spot go and do that thing that is asked of me. I really think that I am an agoraphobic. I would be interested to know if type fives are agoraphobic.

Iv taken the test twice and have gotten 5w6 and it really resonated with me, however I took it again since some stressful things have happened this year personally and it showed I scored as a 5 but the 9 was also very high. Those cant be a wing but they're both the withdrawn type.

Also a 5 can be a micromanager if the other workers genuinely get along with them..usually happens because 5s see work settings as like a playtime haha

It’s interesting for me. I’m a type 5 (I didn’t want to believe it at first) and I’m also a social worker. How those that work for me I don’t know. I deal with peoples emotions and I’m okay with that as longer they don’t expect me to show my emotions.

I’ll completely loose my mind if there’s a problem, and the other person resorts to repeating feelings…instead of stating the facts, so we can find a solution..it comes across as manipulative to me when they’re avoided.

A year ago I got 5w4, but the other day I got 8w7. Wonder if these two mistype? I watched this and the type 8 video and resonate with both. I have the straight to the point, let's get things done attitude with my to do lists, but I'm also very inquisitive and love to learn and extremely independent. I usually get INTJ/ENTJ in MBTI if that helps. Love the videos btw and you get straight to business quickly!

Great vídeo!! I really feel like this in my workplace, but I work at a school so it is very hard to get silence! I arrive home exhausted of all that noise and confusion. Where I struggle the most is that I get sick of my jobs really fast, like, I feel like I have learned what I needed and that brought me to a routine where nothing new happens, so I often get a little bored and feel like I have to change my job or my position in the company. What do you think about the similarities between MBTI and Enneagram? I am INFJ and I am a lot like type 5 but I also feel like I am a little 9. I would say most ISTJ for example would be typed as 5. Have you ever researched that? Thank you!

Oh, I bet it is hard to find silence working at a school 😩 I laughed when you said you get sick of jobs really fast because you learned what you needed to learn and get bored...I bet so many 5’s can relate! And ye so believe there is lots of similarities MBTI and the Enneagram.

OMG, I do hate personal drama at work so much. It's not that I can't deal with it, but it puts off actual work and then I have to put other stuff off and I that one blow-up between two colleagues shifts my schedule for days on end. I hate it. I keep it in and don't whine about my kid at work, why can't they? lol

I'm a 5 w6. I watch heart monitors. I detest when people lie or mislead me. I can fake it with small talk for a full 5 minutes. I got in trouble at work when a lady tried hugging me there. I said please don't hug me, but apparently I'm the @sshole.

As a 5W6 I like to think we represent the most congruent portion of the Enneagram. I emote 5W4, sit in 5, think in 5W6, show stress with 5 to 7 and my confidence is 5 to 8. Thus epitomizing 4 through 8. All of the 'thinking' types with a wing on both of the others.
    Thoughts?

  • @AncoraImparoPiper

I've done multiple Enneagram tests and each one decides I'm a Type 5. And yet, I do not fit perfectly the strict stereotype you describe. I have strong tendencies towards type 7 and 8 but my default is Type 5 but the boundaries of that Type are a bit more porous for me. I'm a lawyer and engineer, but both need me to work in a team at least some of the time, which I hate. No perfect job for the perfect Type 5, I'm afraid.

I do, but also use I think-statements. It depends on my audience and what I want to communicate. I feel leans to intuition more than I think. /5w6
