    This is definitely THE BEST explanation of the Rule of Thirds I’ve seen! Very well explained, and easy to follow! Thank you!

    Funny coincidence: I was in the exact same spot where the photo from the hiking trip in Germany was taken (Sächsische Schweiz, near Idagrotte) just this weekend and it was the first day that I tried to pay attantion to the rule of thirds.

    Your horizontal strips don't divide the frame equally.

  • @Cuetips1000

    When filming or photographing with 21:9 aspect ratio, is it necessary to adjust the horizontal lines or can I use the 16:9 raster?
    BTW: Nice video.

      It's the Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin. It was closed as an airport and opened to the public a couple of years ago. Pretty cool actually.

    To be honest, I highly doubt as you were taking these photos you were even thinking about the "rule of thirds." Take 8:14 for example (pause at that point in the video), you drew the pink lines to conveniently cover the shadows and the people, but the lines weren't even evenly drawn into thirds. As @Cliff Sheets said, you do this again and again.

    It's not about those 'thirds' it's more about don't put the main object of interest right in the middle look at the whole picture. Those thirds are just there because they're not the center and not the edge either. Look at the whole picture move the camera around a little bit until it feels right and then take the picture.

    Great video. Easy to understand. Does the rule of thirds only apply when taking photos of people? Or is it applied to everything in general? Thank you.

    • @ShaneThomasMcMillan
      @ShaneThomasMcMillan 8 лет назад

      Hey David, thanks for your comment, glad you like the video. You can use the rule of thirds for anything you shoot: photos & videos; humans, animals, landscapes, etc. Good luck in your shooting!

    I don't understand how you are drawing the rule of thirds lines when they aren't splitting the picture evenly into thirds. You do it over and over again. For example 7:30 The bottom "third" is much bigger than the top "third" and your left "third" is bigger than your right "third". The 8:13 picture is even worse!

      It's more of a guideline than a rule. He said as much on his bike seat photo. The thirds aren't perfect because he's drawing them in real time.

      He had to "ADJUST" the lines because they weren't hitting his Granny properly. But by all means follow the Rule of 3rds -- lol.

    No offense at all but for some criticism, the desert photo lacks any real foreground, and when you apply the rule of thirds the sky takes so much of the area it really effects your composition as a whole. The bike lock picture is super boring I like the composition tho, I think it would have been a much more interesting photo if it would have been shot at at least f/2.4 to really blur out the background while keeping the midground blured out moderately. Just my .02

    you should try portrait mode when taking picture of subject that are "directed" by vertical line. and the rule of thirds is a bad rule to follow, a very lazy rule.
