  • Want to see my honest opinion of this software after using it for 3 months: www.21stcentury...
    I think this software is great, especially at the price point you can get started with it: free. I think Autodesk is doing something good here and valuable for all of us consumers. I recommend that you try the software out. It won't cost you anything and you really can keep it for free if you use it for non-profit applications (check the license to be sure you fit though).

    Best CAD/CAM software to date. I drew up a model from print and then cammed it. The g code programming would've taken me days to write from scratch when i did it in a few hours. Yes it is free. I have a licence for 3 years. Renewal is up to me. For Free! Now I just need the 300k machine and tooling to make product.

      go to the "try or buy" link and then look under the pricing block. You will see a "*Do I qualify for free Use" link at the bottom of the grey block, just above the "buy it" link. Click on the "*do I qualify for free Use" button. That opens up more drop down options. You will see some options for a "startup" license. That's what you want. You can click on the "get it" link from there.
      Technically you will be downloading a trial version, but you will be asked if you want to use the startup license after that period ends.

    Autodesk bought up Artcam and cadsofts EAGLE. There is a free version of both. Artcam used to be around £100 but autodesk now has a subscription model. A subscription model is quite logical for s/w companies though as a customer a one off payment seem better. Industry consolation does not strike me as hopeful. Need to make sure people have a good set of free open source s/w for CAD/CAM.

    Nice info here. I am setting up shop for wood and metal in a 4' x 5' table and have soo much to learn. Just getting into the Fusion360 now and am having a devil of a time with graphics card. The Min. Req. is stated as 512 DDR2 and my card meets that. However I can't get to the login prompt now. I used to be able to make it right into my most recent project. But now I get the black screen of death, and must reboot. I have tried to reduce the res of the system even at the expense of a good looking desktop and browser.
    So my question is, if you have the time to respond, what graphics card are you using?

      21st Century Woodworking You can toolpath any file you can Open in Fusions. Fusion has translators for all the standard CAD formats, including SolidWorks. So, yes you can toolpath parts from SolidWorks. As an aside, you can also use the Free plugin for SolidWorks as well - HSMXpress or for inventor - Inventor HSM Express. It is all the same CAM engine.

  • @sonofsun4
    @sonofsun4 9 лет назад +5

    If is it on the cloud, that means you do not have anything! You spend time to learn and then they raise the price to the point that you cannot either afford it or it doesn't make economic sense for the amount of the work you do. And you have to go look for something else and learn new stuff. Besides if it was really fully features software, why would someone pay for Inventor?! They(Autodesk) would be "cutting off the branch they are standing on"....In other words this is definitely not fully featured, but rather shaved down software...You really believe Autodesk would give anything free to anyone???Hahaha. Have you fallen from cherry tree???

    • @dirktheeng
      @dirktheeng  9 лет назад +1

      Download it, try it, and think about the business model before you criticize too much. First, they are offering the full featured software now for free under the startup license (a change since I made this video). No more finagling and lying to get a "student" license. They are betting on the creativity of their users to make new products and the general honesty (and the possibility of litigation if you have to look at it that way) should you start to use the software to sell stuff. If you are making money with it, its only fair that a company be able to support itself from that as well. They are making that easier for people to swallow too because the price to use it honestly is much lower.
      They are taking a different tactic in business like almost all major software companies are now (Adobe, Microstoft, etc), . They are betting that people will pay low annual fees for commercial use continually rather than buy software that is expensive once and never need to buy it again. The profit margin could be much larger. Think about it: you get someone to buy software for $300 or $1200 / year after 5-6 years you've made back your costs compared to selling them a license and they continue to use the software because it is good. It also helps small businesses and startups because they don't have to lay out huge cash to get started.
      I believe this is a test the waters kind of product for autodesk and that you are going to see this actually become the standard and products like Inventor will go by the wayside. Only time will tell, but this new model of business has some big benefits for everybody involved including you and me.

      21st Century Woodworking
      Been there and done that, my friend. In early 80's it was APT and Compact II programming through the teletype terminal. Software was somewhere on the mainframe. (basically same thing as soft. being in the cloud)Suddenly they stop doing it and all that learning and spending time and money turned into waste!. And this is exactly same scam. They just want to catch you.....Not all of us-the old guard- are dead....we can pass this message on young generation.....DO NOT even think about it...in the end you will loose and they will win! Put money in something you own, you know and you can keep it for ever. Do not put your head into a lions mouth! IT IS SCAM!

    • @dirktheeng
      @dirktheeng  9 лет назад +1

      Sunshine I think we are going to have to agree to disagree. I hope we can be friends and respect each others views. For me, the software was learned in 10 minutes because it is so closely modeled after inventor and solidworks work flow, it's also free for personal use so I have almost nothing invested in using it. I am not worse off using it than I was before and can just as easily switch to something else later, though my pocket book will feel the pinch since this is a zero dollar investment. I should also mention that they did change their pricing from what I said in the video, but they went the other way. You can now get ultimate on a start up license for no cost instead of the original plan of $300. I am willing to put that down to see where this goes.

    • @consaka1
      @consaka1 7 лет назад

      I wouldn't call it a scam. But I would agree that it is a poor model to have to depend on. Having to learn new software all the time is aggravating.

    • @consaka1
      @consaka1 7 лет назад

      It sounds to me like you had experience using this type of software already. You are also very confident that you will have internet in the future. Having previous experience makes it a lot easier to decide what you want to use for free. I finally settled on DesignSpark for the simple reason that I have no previous experience with any kind of drawing or modeling software. It was pretty easy to learn to use and has great help files. I just read through the beginning tutorial and it ended up being pretty intuitive for my first project. Which is ironically a router bracket holder. (Basically a router clamp that bolts to the z-axis.)
      Honestly I had more trouble getting the resulting DFX file to translate to the proper size in the cam program. I also had trouble with the cnc motor skipping because I hadn't configure the tinyG properly.
      My dad lives out in the sticks and I want him to give this stuff a try as well. Their internet is spotty and almost non existent. In fact their recent snow means they have had no internet (Satellite) for a couple weeks.
      Ultimate software has to have little to know weaknesses. I would say this software is great for you but I would not call it the ultimate solutions. It's free and that's great but it has too many weaknesses to be ultimate. Just my two cents.
      Now I'm off to find the ultimate CAM program that can handle DFX files without resizing them. Boo on inkscape and Makercam. I had to use Inkscape to convert to an SWG file for MakerCam(which is cloud based but otherwise a pretty easy program to learn.) Dimensions did not convert, although I was able to eventually use Makercam to resize it and get it close enough.

    you ay @ ~ 12:00 other software companies charge 1000$ for 2.5-Axis , lol. Even in 2014 there where a ton of software for hobbyist pricerange (~150-250$) which can do more (3-axis). So that statement is not realistic.

    No I will pass. I want 100% ownership of my files. Not having any of my files lay hostage on the cloud. Sorry Autodesk, I rather own my software and have 100% file control.

      It is a good question and one I had myself just a few days ago.
      Cad is the program you use to design your 3d shapes or 2.5d shapes. It is basically a glorified drawing program that allows distinct precision. CAM is the program that takes that shape and converts it to gCode which is the machine language. A good CAM program will let you set the holes to pockets and set the order in which various features are cut. This is where you set the speed of your machine and the size of your router bits. Sometimes the length too depending on the program. It also lets you set the depth of each cut.
      After that you need another program to send that code to the machine. This last program SHOULD match the controller card you use to control the motors on your machine. Considering that gCode is a standard you would think any program would work and they honestly should but some cards do not implement all the gCode base of features. For instance some may not support all of the spindle settings. Your two most basic spindle settings are m3 for on and m5 for off. But the code will also support PWM control of the spindle which allows you to set the speed of the spindle.
      Occasionally you will have a custom unit designed with some of its own features that uses nonstandard codes for those features. You would likely find something like this on a proprietary standalone CNC machine.
      Hope that helps a bit. Keep in mind I believe it is completely accurate but since I just learned this stuff in the last two days I could be a bit off. For instance I am not entirely positive the PWM gCode is really a standard part of the official gCode. If commercial units don't use DC spindles then it may be something unofficial.
