you can hear the engine on these videos with the windscreen through the rev range even in the high gears. before by the time they shift to 5th all you hear was the wind. just need to flow some air to the cockpit to cool the guys, but love this.
Don't forget the one Red Bull tested in 2016 (Sochi) that Daniel Ricciardo said was fine to look through. I've seen someone comment that the Ferrari one was curved when seen from the side, whereas this and the RBR 'aeroscreen' are straight when seen in profile. That must be the major difference (less distortion), along with PPG's clever fighter-jet-proven material.
Mikeado66 Yeah, when I seen this screen that Indycar are testing, I through it looked a lot like the one Redbull tested in Russia and both Daniel Ricciardo and Scott Dixon say the view is fine but I wish F1 would take note of it.
well this aeroscreen has been well developed whilst the one that ferrari tried in silverstone had very little development. just because it works in indy doesn't mean it would work in f1. the dimensions of an f1 car and an indycar are quite different. So for an aeroscreen to be properly accommodated on an f1 car, we might need to wait until the new regulations in 2021. it's not as simple as it seems.
I have had the good fortune to have been able to drive on a simulator, pretty good one,and I love the newer dallara IndyCar versus the older one big improvement, and car feed back and it front end handling, versus the old car, best of all the view out the front on road courses is exceptional,I come from motorcycle racing background so vision is not as critical, because our head is clear and moving around,so in a car I sit and say okay, this is blocked how do I visually get around this, first time in the new Indy chassis I immediately love the new front view...great job...
Looks good to me. I think it is better looking than the halo at the moment but I will wait to see how the F1 teams utilized the halo in their design of the car. Perhaps though if IndyCar proves that their design is successful F1 might take a look at copying it should the halo still prove to be divisive
A while? It was after one lap! I think F1 basically told Vettel to take it out for a lap and say that it wouldn't work so that F1's halo idea would look better.
It looks great so far. My guess is they will need to add tear-offs like in sports car racing, so that will need to be tested as well. Good first steps, and from Scott's comments it's a quieter and calmer experience for the drivers so that could be good too.....or it could get really hot on hot days. Still a lot of testing to be done.
I agree this seems to work very well with very clear all round vision. My only concern, from a drivers perspective, is that during a race it is very rare that you dot not get things on your visor which is easy to get rid of with your tear offs but with this not so much. Also, on road courses, in the rain l can foresee a real problem.......but l am sure they have thought of that.
Visibility is fine after a handful of laps, but what about after a full stint? How many helmet visor tear aways does a driver go through throughout a race?
Then let them wipe it off during pit stops in F1, even one wipe off a race would be enough generally, but in most races they'd get two of course. I'm positive the crew could do it without adding any time if at all very little for difficult spots
It’s not like it’s the first time any racing series has had a clear structure between the driver and the road. Look at LMP, NASCAR, GTE, GT3, and so on and you’ll find tear offs, men who wipe the actual screen, etc. I feel like that’s a very quickly solved problem that is dwarfed by the element of safety added by its implementation.
Tyler Russell LMP, NASCAR, GTE, GT3? Dude, they all have windshield wipers and can clean their windshields on the fly lol. How is that the same? I know the screen will get cleaned during pit stop, which is why I questioned the visibility of the screen after a STINT, not a race.
Proper questions, but hasn't been a problem for Le Mans in nearly 100 years. That's why engineers exist, their job is to solve these types of problems.
I think the next generation of F1 cars should have a front end like the Indycars so that the windscreen can be fitted properly. The one Ferrari tested was done with a car that wasn't designed to run with something like that at all.
Ferrari tested something similar to this, it actually didn't look too bad. However SV claimed it made him feel sick so they scrapped the idea. I think it's definitely better looking then the Halo contraption.
I am curious to see what it does in the rain. At high speeds I'm sure the water will just go over the driver, but in slow corners I can see their visor getting wet, and then no airflow to clean it back off being an issue to deal with.
O O and they did. PPG’s still involved, only this time, the screen will be fitted around a halo-like device built by Red Bull Advanced Technologies. You should check out Scott Dixon’s video where he tests an aeroscreen prototype in the simulator.
Love the look. Open-wheel cars are starting to look like road-going fighter jets, and it's amazing.
Awesome deflector, good job INDYCAR and PPG.
Add some refinement and this will be perfect.
The sunset is awesome
Freaking perfect

The cockpit is so hot that during caution laps guys hang their hands and arms out to the sides of the car to cool them off with the wind.
The view looks as good as with it off so why can't F1 use it then???
Because it wasn't the same kind of aeroscreen being used. The materials are different
Well F1 should be testing this one out instead and not the one Ferrari used.
Don't forget the one Red Bull tested in 2016 (Sochi) that Daniel Ricciardo said was fine to look through.

The FIA didnt even try!!! they rushed that awful halo into the cars to avoid lawsuits
Soda_84 they did indeed because Bianchi's family was putting pressure on them to have something to protect the drivers.
"the visors made some drivers.. dizzy"
That halo on the Formula 1 cars is just plug-ugly ! Eeerg ! Why can't the F-1 engineers do better ? (The Indy cars look great !)
Soda_84 actually they started researching since like 2009
They did it because the opinion of a few ill informed people on the internet doesn't matter. Spa was evidence of it's value, nuff said.
It's surprising how little visible distortion we can see here. I honestly expected visibility to be slightly worse than this.

Boy do I have some news for you 🤣🤣
And F1 can't use it because visiblity is bad? It looks very good for me at least...
Artur Goździk because they have specifically designed it to work with the bodywork.
Now they are stuck with their ridiculous looking flip flop. Good that Indycar actually made the effort to make it work.
F1 didn't adopt it because drivers that tested it felt sick after a while.
Yeah the air going over it was buffeting and shaking the drivers heads

Still a lot of testing to be done.
it looks good, and effective.
it just did not interfere that much with onboard view, and viewing angle at all
I agree this seems to work very well with very clear all round vision. It looks a lot more easy to get use to then the F1 flip flop.
I don't see any distortion? PROBABLY VETTEL POLITICAL MOVES ONLY!!!!
smh exactly whinny little bitch does what the FIA says
The one tested in f1 was different. A screen like this will likely come to f1, it was just the halo that was ready for 2018.
look the different twitter.com/suttonimages/status/961912013319495680

Maybe clean it at pit stops or have tear offs... Kind of like they do it at Le Mans where they race for 24 hours.

For Shame F1. This is going to be the proper route when fully sorted. I foresee the HUD making its way to the screen eventually too .
Looks like it would work well.... just need to design tearoffs for it.
With all the money involved, how on earth could F1 only come up with the halo??
When a 4-time world champion and Ferrari driver complain of dizziness, the FIA is swayed more in their decision.
This is not the same as Ferrari's windscreen. That was more curved.
I think the next generation of F1 cars should have a front end like the Indycars so that the windscreen can be fitted properly. The one Ferrari tested was done with a car that wasn't designed to run with something like that at all.
men... in 3th gear already goes freaky fast
Look's good. Will there be tear-offs for it?
Good deal I think it should work. If not lets look into how Top Fuel dragsters have now.
FIA eat your heart out...
Ferrari tested something similar to this, it actually didn't look too bad. However SV claimed it made him feel sick so they scrapped the idea. I think it's definitely better looking then the Halo contraption.
Why don’t they just make a whole hatch like a fighter jet
great job indycar
I find those rivets more distracting than anything. Wish they could file the edges a different angle to help minimize the visual
They said they are going to address that in Version 2.
There's almost no glare during the night
How will it look running in the wet I wonder?
I am curious to see what it does in the rain. At high speeds I'm sure the water will just go over the driver, but in slow corners I can see their visor getting wet, and then no airflow to clean it back off being an issue to deal with.
may make the car faster.
Add some more metal support

These cars look loose!
No tire warmers in Indycar, watch some of the in-cockpit videos at the road courses, they look like a real handful until the tires come up to temp.
They still need hard to improve it and make it more filigree than it is now.
The f1 halo looks bad, But Leclerc would be dead if they had these. The halo stopped that wheel from cleaning his clock. Cant stop it all I guess.
Graphics has come a long way since i played indianapolis 500 on my amiga 500.
ruclips.net/video/KmCFPrLNZZM/видео.htmlm32s
F1! eat my super cool non retarded safety visor.
Att: IndyCar
Phoenix is just too small of a track for those cars. It seems like the cars are always in the turn.
And his lap times in this video are over one second slower than the pole speed last year.
Less downforce equals better racing, but also slightly slower lap times. I think that tradeoff is worth it.
Hopefully that is the case at Phoenix. I would still like to see them drop more downforce off these cars by going to single element front wings.
Sounds like modern F1
Better than f1
For me, the halo looks better than this, at least on the F2 car, we have to wait and see how the F1 teams integrated it to their 2018 designs.
Really? I didn't think anyone would consider the flip flop to look better than this.
@@RyanHellyer
People are getting used to the Halo now and I personally don't think it looks to bad.
Halo I expect to be stronger in an incident too.
