- Enjoy these highlights of the 1993 Qualifying Final between Essendon and Carlton at the MCG. In what would ultimately became a dress rehearsal for that year's Grand Final, this was the first final ever played under lights. In an extremely even season, both Carlton and Essendon had finished with 13 wins out of 20. As the previous Round 2 matchup between the two sides was a draw, a really tight encounter was expected.

Why did the clock keep ticking after the goal?
Those Umpires certainly had a soft spot for Essendon.
First final played under lights.
So controversial at the time.
With the Final 6 and 3 finals in Week 1, the AFL either had to play multiple day finals simultaneously in Melbourne, (something the league stopped doing in 1984), play day final outside Victoria (the option they went with in 1991 and 1992 with West Coast hosting at Subiaco), or a night final… in 1993 it was the only option.
