Crazy how I have a Nissan in the shop for an engine job. Now it doesn't wants to start. I didn't have to remove the throttle body to do the head/valves job. Now it's throwing a P2101 & P0507. ETC issues. It's a crank no start. The customer is pissed. Pushed the throttle body plate. Vehicle starts right up. But check light keeps popping up and the vehicle goes into limp mood. Swapped out the throttle body with a used one. Car up and running again. The throttle body plate was stuck and restricting the air. The customer doesn't understand how his car drove in for an engine job now it's a crank no start due to a throttle body. This is the crazy part about owning a garage. You just have to bite the bullet and get the car out of your shop.
I work at a GM dealership in 99.9 percent of the time the p 1101 fix is cleaning a throttle body and replacing the PCV orifice. The PCV orifice it's so small at about 60,000 MI they are mostly restricted. Even if they pass the crankcase pressure test if they are above 60,000 miles I replace them. The orifice is only $8 but it's about 5 hours labor to replace it.
Exactly what I was going to say. Had this exact situation thru my bay and I wrote them up for the PCV orifice because the last dealer missed it and I had actually did the leg work with the scan tool. Air flow compensation what something wild like 92%. Cleaned TB and test drove: no change. Some more data checking, PCV change/cleaning (a lot of cleaning) and they sailed thru emissions. Heard about it because it was family of another tech @ different OEM. One of my fav repairs because I heard they we're starting to give up on the Malibu because the code was set for a year or so. No one could figure it out. I believe there was a TSB or something related that did point me in the right direction...airflow comp after cleaning was damning tho.
I remember years ago a TSB came out from GM for a transmission failure. It's been too long ago to remember the details, but I do remember where the blame was placed because it was so obviously stupid. They blamed the failure on the customer laying their arm on the column mounted shift lever. I also remember telling the instructor what I thought of it while attending one of the many classes my dealership sent me to in Saginaw and Detroit. He didn't disagree.
I wasted so much time following the TSBs on these two codes. Just remember that a technical service bulletin is not the be all, end all and that we need to lean on our fundamentals FIRST on any diagnostic job.
So who pays for the wasted time, especially when it was a quick easy fix? Are you charging what it should have taken or what it actually took including the misdirected time?
I have a 94 GMC Sierra C3500 with a 7.4 engine. I don't have a scan tool for opening the TBI. Is there a gas additive I can use in the fuel tank or chemical spray that will clean the deposits throughout the TBI?
@@D2O2You charge a set service fee, no matter how long it takes. "Easy fix" lol in hindsight yeah it's an easy fix. Paul makes it look easy because he understands what data to look at to figure out the problem. If you're new and inexperienced you think you'll know what data you look at to determine what the problem is? No.
@@peacepoet1947I would use sea foam in the fuel tank and possibly spray some gumout into the throttle body while it is running - carefully trying not to stall the engine out. Make sure any additives or spray cleaners do not contain silicone as it can/will csuse issues with the catalytic converter. I've also never worried about actuating the butterflys on a tbi but I've never worked with one that was completely fly by wire. But I guess a bigger question is why do you think it needs cleaning? Is it acting up, or are you just thinking it needs refreshing or something. TBI isn't really like the old carburetors with passage ways and fuel metering circuits that can get gummed up. So a cleaning will usually not provide a mechanic's fix in a bottle in very many situations. Fuel tank injector cleaners can help but don't expect overnight ir overwhelming results. Most pump gas already has detergents in it that deal with these issues. (Edit) i think i understand your concern after watching the entire video. With a TBI, the injectors are in the throttle body. You shouldn't ever have this issue because the gasoline will clean it as it flows by. The condition in the video is caused because the injectors are located after the throttle body and do not get the gas washing over the plates. However, the PVC is still plumbed into the intake, so oil deposits can build up over time. I cannot ever remember seeing a TBI injection system that wasn't cable or linkage driven. Operating the cable or linkage will not carry the same concerns as a fully electronically activated throttle.
I work on these things all the time due to the amount we have in the fleet. They still sell these cars for fleets, and we're seeing this issue, as well as transmission issues. At least they addressed the vacuum pump failures😅 Great video and info as always!
Hey Scanner, I've been watching your videos for long time now always love it your step-by-step diagnostic is great knowledge for all of us thanks mate!
Ironically I cleaned a relative's Prius throttle body and MAF this week! It was had a rough idle, no codes. I carefully opened and closed the throttle plate not to let it slam.

Paul and Caleb another great video! Your fundamentals are true and tested. In your experience doing many of these throttle cleanings have you ever seen a dirty throttle throw a fuel rail pressure sensor code on a GDI? I kept getting the same code over and over I checked the sensor and the wiring the high pressure pump all checked out. Pin fitment. Looked at the throttle it was really dirty cleaned the MAF as well. Not sure if that was the issue but code is gone😂. Thank you and God bless all you do.
Thank you! And I have not, but I'm wondering what the specifics of that code you mentioned are. In particular if throttle angle, engine load, MAP and MAF parameters were mentioned.
@@ScannerDanner Thank you Paul for the response. The code was P0191 performance code. It was very intermittent, thought it might be a short somewhere in the wire, like you always say heat and vibration. Engine load 74.9%, TP 40%, MAF (lb/min) 5.529, MAP (in/Hg)25.4%, ECT 190, engine RPM 2553. It has been a while and since has not returned and also got a better scanner to read more parameters. As far as opening and closing throttle plate manually on a gm vehicle there are times when in the diagnostic aids it states to do just that and check for binding or looseness. Never have had a problem with a gm tac throttle body by doing that. Just have ignition off when doing it. As far as bulletins go, damned if ya do, damned if ya dont. But any bulletin that applies across vehicle lines and different years that i believe this one did if i remeber correctly and also gave different locations for connector maybe? I had a malibu (I believe it was also an 18) that had the same codes. I ended up replacing the throttle (mine wasnt even dirty). Then did the MAF sensor because it was still reading rich. The real culprit for the car I worked on ended up being an o2 sensor. Replaced it and fuel trim went right where it was supposed to.
Nissan Leaf probably from about 2017 on WILL set a check engine light on if the current sensor (batt negative) is disconnected. Never struck a check engine light on a GM but the battery warning light WILL sometimes illuminate if the current sensor is unplugged. Cheers.
I had the same problem on the same car, except at first the intake tube had come off the throttle body the first time. Problem still existed and I went around and around with the TSBs but ended up cleaning the TB and haven't seen the car since.
Some of these vehicles have special coverages for replacing the accelerator pedal because the sensors wig out and fail. Or a harness rubbing on a hose clamp under the hood. But if its not a consistent problem i wouldn't worry about it.

I've never, not once seen negative trims from a dirty throttle body. And honestly we only had about a 5% improvement. There was other issues with this car, but I'm not chasing an 8-10% trim issue
@@ScannerDanner Me neither, same as you actually just a slight improvement was always something else that caused the bigger issue. But def throttle position codes, not app codes. Ive always recommended cleaning and reset. If p2135 resets it either gets a sensor on throttle body or the whole thing. Sensors only available for certain years. Did take one apart and removed the double ended female terminals and tighten them up to help a lady out who could not afford a proper fix.
Helo i have doubt. How you check a desel engine injector feed circut with a test light. And when i try to back prob the feed side. Then i get electric shok. If i unplug the connector and tuche the feed wire cranking still the test light wont light
Pa emissions waivers can be issued if the vehicle fails an emissions inspection. Diagnostics and repairs related to the failure of the test are made. The vehicle then fails the follow-up emissions inspection. After the second failure, if the cost of the diagnostics and repairs performed in an attempt to repair the failure exceeded 450$, a emissions waiver for one year can be issued. There are more rules and procedures related to the waiver process, but this is the short version.
Depends on where you live and if a shop even charges by the hour for diag. I sure don't. When I did charge for this stuff, I'd bill a customer the same if it took me 5 minutes or 60. It was a flat fee agreed upon before I'd even start or I wasn't even looking at it. So we need to leave "time" out of the equation for the first initial testing that is being done
Trims at idle are almost useless since newer cars purge upwards of 40% atidle. Gm has a pid for that as lt average with and without purge. When i check trims i do it with the purge disabled to eliminate its influence. The smaller the engine the more it matters
TSB's, Identifix and other crowd sourced fixes are a tool that should be used with caution. The rabbit hole can be very deep.
amen!
sure, read them, but still diagnose properly!

Do you still teach at Rosedale?
Just as a guest where I'll come in and teach a class for a few days or cover for another instructor
Helo i have doubt. How you check a desel engine injector feed circut with a test light. And when i try to back prob the feed side. Then i get electric shok. If i unplug the connector and tuche the feed wire cranking still the test light wont light
You cannot test diesel injectors or GDI injectors this way
@@ScannerDanner then what is the right way to do it
@@ScannerDanner why😕
Could not get a real good look at maf actual vs desired, if they dont match closely can cause higher negative fuel trims without maf codes.
Purge valves are ridiculously loud on these gm. loud rapid clicking sound that can be mistaken for something else
Is that emission waiver based on mileage year of the vehicle what.
How much a hour diagnostics cost?
Depends on where you live and if a shop even charges by the hour for diag. I sure don't. When I did charge for this stuff, I'd bill a customer the same if it took me 5 minutes or 60. It was a flat fee agreed upon before I'd even start or I wasn't even looking at it. So we need to leave "time" out of the equation for the first initial testing that is being done
I had one very similar and it ended up being a cracked charge air cooler from an accident.
How do i join to watch ur classes online.

Thanks!
If light comes back replace valve cover bad pcv
TSB’s are last resorts after proper testing. If proper tests all pass then the TSB “should” apply
Don't agree. I'll always look for tsb before diag. Because you can spend a crazy amount of time chasing a ghost when the tab had the solution.
What scan tool ?
Snap-On Verus Edge I believe we used in this one
Trims at idle are almost useless since newer cars purge upwards of 40% atidle. Gm has a pid for that as lt average with and without purge. When i check trims i do it with the purge disabled to eliminate its influence. The smaller the engine the more it matters
Good tip
@@ScannerDanner
Thanks for the tip.

Danner you would starve as a Diag Tech
😂 I've been a diag tech for 30 years and I'm definitely not starving
