      thats kind of the beauty of me using as many BMX parts as I can. So when weird combinations come up for the exact chainstay length for the proper tension i found; i can get the chainring/sprocket of the size.

    When I was doing single speed (and eventually dingle speed) for my mtb, I had around 5 nine speed chains that were at various levels of "stretch" so they could fit whatever gear I had. You have a lot more fudge factor for magic gear if you keep all your used chains. : )

  • @peterbarnes2845
    @peterbarnes2845 2 года назад

    Spindatt; have you seen the tensioning you can do by using a sprocket from a cassette in between the rear sprocket and the front. The sprocket fits tight between the chain horizontal runs. As you put pressure on your crank the upper chain run obviously pulls tight, but this then puts pressure onto the bottom run thus taking the slack out. It gives you a little variation on what sprockets you can use on a vertical dropout frame so that you can still use your perfect gear ratio. I used this method with a kona lava dome in 2005 when I was an apprentice, it allowed me to run 32-15 gearing even though the gearing didn’t ordinarily allow a tight chain. I’m no fan of half link chains, they stretch so much constantly pulling the kink out of the links.

    Luckily for me my single speed vertical dropout behaves more like a single speed horizontal dropouts. It's a unique vertical dropout that internal gear belt drive bike frame have to allow some adjustability/play. Thus I don't have to look for that unicorn gear. What will happen instead is the skewer and wheel will be at different spots at the vertical dropout like horizontal dropouts with different gear ratio.

    Nice work! But it looks you didn't use a half link in the chain? Because that opens up a lot more possibilities for finding the magic ratio. Also regarding the BMX cranks - I'm surprised that you had trouble finding a Euro BB cos they're pretty common, but they are quite weak due to the small size of the bearings. However you can make a DIY BMX outboard BB using Shimano Hollowtech BB cups. Just tap out the bearings and tap in a set of Spanish BMX bearings with the appropriate spindle size (19 or 22). You need a longish spindle and also need to get the internal spacer width spot-on. But it's awesome and way stronger than a standard Euro and looks awesome too.

    You can turn any mtb into a single speed without chain tensioner my using odd and even numbers.Meaning that you have a 44 t in front you have to use a 13,15,17,19,21,23,cassette conversion or a bolt on offset number freewheel,15,17,21,understand?so if you put a 25 tooth in front you'll need an even number in the back.

    yo spindatt, once you've built it up fully you should 100% get a 13t fixed cog that bolts to disk rotor mounts on the hub, put some straps on the pedals. you would have a one of a kind fgfs, mtb fun bike.
    please just try that i think that would make a very interesting video

    • @Spindatt

      Lol my head thinks it'll fold the frame, but at the same time... can't be worse than the disk brake

      I totally blundered the upload lol. I finished editing it last night and uploaded wanting to schedule it for this morning.. but made it public right away.. then scheduled it.. then it was horridly performing because it sat "uploaded" for 10 hours with no views. RUclips algorithm doesn't like that haha

    Too bad a 13t freewheel is metric threaded and smaller than the Surly hub will accommodate though. You are probably limited to 15/16t and up.
