I feel like each verse could be for different characters: Verse 1 is for Iroh losing his son too soon. Verse 2 is for Sokka & Katara dealing with their broken family and broken nation, just wanting their father to come back from war. Verse 3 is for Zuko feeling lost and nearly hopeless for so long thinking the approval of his father is the only way to regain his honor and literally return home. Verse 4 is for Aang having lost his people and no longer having the same home to return to. Verse 5 is for in the end where Iroh now has a son in Zuko, Sokka & Katara's family is reunited, Zuko finds his true self, and Aang has a new family and can now rebuild his nation. They all find home again.
Imagine being heir apparent of a powerful kingdom and about to invade the biggest nation in the world. You get through their legendary outer defenses and then find out you lost your child in the war you're fighting. Iroh went through deep and tragic shit.

As someone who grew up with Avatar, it getting so much attention and love lately makes me immensely happy. The franchise is a legendary masterpiece in every way. I still rewatch and reread everything every one or two years and never get bored.
I have listened to just about every cover of Leaves from the Vine for the past two years, and this is the most faithful and poetic, Mako would be proud of this.
That would mean that his son also had a great connection to the Spirit World, which took Iroh many years of soul searching to achieve, one of which was his son dying.
This is one of those scenes that truly elevates Avatar: the Last Airbender to being a great show, along with what I consider my favorite show. It takes powerful moments for a good show to become a great one, after all.
Every time i hear this i cry, Uncle Iroh was an inspiration to us all, and Mako put all of himself into Iroh. Without Mako, a legend will never be the same.
what really hits for me with this song is how it feels like the stages of a parent who is hoping for their son to return from a war. it starts off with a solo yet hopeful request to see their son victoriously marching home. then it switches to a more sensor begging for their son to see their son return. the next stage is a an unfamiliarity of home now their son has been gone for so long. it finally ends with a hope being lost, with the sad reality that their son probably isnt coming back. beautiful lyrics, but very impactful when you ponder them

My condolences, friend; may you find comfort again this year, and know that the prayers of others are with you. And may your grandfather Rest In Peace.
The transition from black to white hit me in the chest and Caleb’s voice is just so full of emotion! The animation really got me and now I feel like I have to go watch all of ATLA again!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart Caleb. This has been the worst week of my life thus far because of some heavy losses but this song reminded me of our Uncle Iroh who lost everything he held dear and pushed forward with nothing but kindness and love for those around him.
I watched my grandfather, soldier of the US Army, was buried this week and I still remember the three words of Honor, Duty, Country. He was my family's soldier and to hear this song now has given me such a new meaning for me. A mountain man, Forester, State trooper, soldier of the forgotten war (Korea), a devoted Christian, construction worker, most importantly a family man. He showed me what it truly meant to be a man and what it meant to be there for myself and others...he pushed me on the right path, I will never be able to pay him back. He pushed to do whatever he wanted, no matter how much it hurt him, he never stopped even though his back killed him to the point of screaming, stubborn bastard I miss you. I wish I knew him more and had more time with him, he is with God now, ready for his next adventure and finally at peace with his wife there to greet him. I miss them so much... I love you grandma and grandpa.
R.I.P Makoto. You were the uncle everyone needed, the time wizard everyone feared, and the man we all wish we could be. I look forward to introducing my children to the work you poured your heart into for our enjoyment. You'll forever be missed ❤

Two years since this cover was released. Two years since it first tugged at our hearts… and it still brings us to tears. Sixteen years since we lost the voice of our Uncle, and we still weep with him, for the Uncle we lost. We know him well, for he is always with us in our hearts. That ache will never truly leave, but we wouldn’t want it too. Because it reminds us who he was to us. Mako is, was, and always will be our Uncle Iroh. Thank you again for this cover, Caleb. It is a treasure beyond words, a comfort in troubling times, a reminder of a beloved Uncle, a testament to a friend we all would welcome back into our lives happily. “In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength.” “While it is always best to believe in one’s self, a little help from others can be a great blessing.” R.I.P., Uncle Iroh.

To portray, convey, the emotion and love took a measure of bravery. Yes, I'll cry every time. For all those we have lost. Thank you for such a wonderful tribute.
I think the changing of the seasons in the background is really poetic. It shows how as people pass, the months, seasons, and even years pass by as the rest of the world moves on. But that's the most important part. The fact that we're able to move on and live our best in honor of those we loved, the same people that we lost.
In my almost 28 years no song has ever made me cry as hard as this. Man, Iroh was a different type of character. Some people never seen some of the mid 2000s greatest shows and it shows. And this episode..... man now I'm crying

The episode this one's in gets me everytime. Uncle Iroh is one of the best mentor type characters I ever came across. You did great on this one, @Caleb 🥰
I'm finally watching TLOK now and when I saw Uncle Iroh in the spirit world I immediately started sobbing uncontrollably. TLA was and still is an amazing show. I'm feeling all the feels on this one 🥺😭 Rest easy, Mako. 💚
It's rare that I cry before a word has been sung but those few notes played at the start have a one way express ticket straight to my emotions this was, and still is tbh, one of the greatest shows I've seen and an absolutely incredible cover of this song, thank you Caleb.
Caleb voice really hits the ever feeling and hardships that each character has went through especially Mako having to say goodbye to us and just the pain he must of been feeling knowing he was dying of cancer.
Only 7 seconds in and I'm already tearing up. Just that tune alone shreds my soul. Not only because of the story tied to it but because what that story was, a tribute to an amazing actor who is missed.
Almost exactly a year ago, I lost my best friend. He was a soldier, and took his own life. I didn't come here for that, I just started a Playlist of caleb's songs and this came up, and I broke down. I'm sure he would have loved this. RIP.
Found this again and still makes me cry hearing it as someone who grew up watching the show... This cover is so good and I still come back to it sometimes at random...
I love this song so much. I know it’s about Iroh singing to his son but I have a different view of it. The brave soldier boy is our happiness. It might not come soon or at all but we can never lose hope. Iroh lost his son but he found Zuko. We lost our happiness but we can find a new form of happiness. It won’t be the same but never shut it down. Let it slowly fill you up so that you can get better. Thank you for this beautiful cover, Caleb
I clicked on this video, and when it started I thought I wasn't going to cry. I honestly didn't feel like crying, and I was good for a while. But by the end....I will always cry. Thank you Caleb, sometimes we can all use a good cry.
In times of peace, Sons bury their fathers. In times of war, fathers bury their sons. The fact Irohs son was dead had been revealed earlier in the show but we only got it in passing conversation. To see that Iroh was still so broken by his son's death is enough to drive anyone to get misty eyed. Thank you Mako for bringing this character to life for as long as you did.
I think you've come closer than anyone else I've heard in replicating that kind of poetic metaphor cadence of the verses. Really appreciate how you chose to sang this, just going for sincere emotion, and that tree going through the seasons really complimented the piece beautifully. Bravo!

Clinging to the vine, not knowing what’s below
Little solider boy, can I come home
Brave solider boy, will I come home
Leaves on the wind, where do they go
They flutter, spin, and drift along
Dancing to the flow

You never disappoint us with your songs. You always put your heart into it. Especially this one. . .made me cry.
May your soul rest, Mako. You are always a Legend. So long, Uncle.
Rest in peace, Mako. Your Uncle Iroh is an inspiration to everyone who meets you through him.
I'm finally watching TLOK now and when I saw Uncle Iroh in the spirit world I immediately started sobbing uncontrollably. TLA was and still is an amazing show. I'm feeling all the feels on this one 🥺😭
Rest easy, Mako.
Woah, this give me chills.
Uncle Iroh taught me to be a better person. In a way... he was all of our Uncles
Only 7 seconds in and I'm already tearing up. Just that tune alone shreds my soul. Not only because of the story tied to it but because what that story was, a tribute to an amazing actor who is missed.
That was gorgeous and full of melancholia
The emotion in Caleb's voice is incredible. Had me tearing up
**video has barely begun** TEARS IN MY EYES!!!
You really woke up and chose to make the world cry.
Thank you for this cry. Again you show your beautiful range of your voice, but let the beauty of the song to take the forefront. Thank you
Can't have tears without tea
HERE COMES THE FEELS
I am in tears. Your tribute to Mako is beautiful and I'm sure he would have been honored by this rendition.
Ah damnit, my tearbending ducts are acting up again.
They are.
I cried and I'm proud that I cried! Beautiful as always
I love how much of a contrast this is to your metal like covers and songs, it really shows how one can differentiate in their material.
Never thought one of Caleb Hyles’ videos would make me shed a tear ;-;
This is beautiful, thank you caleb.
If the original song would make me cry this version broke me on tears i'm literally on the floor 😭💖
I think you've come closer than anyone else I've heard in replicating that kind of poetic metaphor cadence of the verses. Really appreciate how you chose to sang this, just going for sincere emotion, and that tree going through the seasons really complimented the piece beautifully. Bravo!
Unexpected video, but appreciated.
a version that i can still feel the emotion but doesn't make me cry like a child so i can casually listen to it, absolutely amazing!
I'm not crying I'm tear bending
