    Mick Fanning showed more consistency, power, speed and fluid at the same time... and also his wave selection and longer rides gave him the victory.

    9.93 was way too high for that wave imo. That is almost a 10! lol
    Should have been a high 8 or low nine max.

      I got no hate for Mick whatsoever (just to get that out of the way).
      Imo, although Mick ripped a wave apart that was amongst the better waves of the heat; it was an fairly short/fast wave that Mick needed to chase all the way through.
      Probably because he needed the chase and squeeze in some turns at the same time on this wave he could not afford (or take the risk) to do someting 'eyebrow lifting'. I'm not talking about airs, but at least someting different than Mick's repetition of precision power hacks. And i do not consider these floaters as a nice change up.
      I can see though that the judges scored high on this one because Mick managed to make the 'best' out of this fast (best of the heat) wave. But considering his conservative and very predictable approach to this wave, i just can't see this as a 9.93. Again, i love Mick! But i do grow a bit weary of his predictable surfing. But that is my personal opinion.
      On a sidenote: giving the advantage of a 9.93 so early in the heat while the waves are slow....that beter be justified by a damn good wave/preformance. Or you're closing the door to early for any competition.
      What do you think about the 9.93?

    • @timblizzard4226
      @timblizzard4226 7 лет назад +10

      It all depends on how high they have set the bar. If you are ok with the 8.5 Jon Jon got for what was really nothing more than a couple of check turns and a semi-decent air reverse, I have no problem scoring that wave at least a point higher. The floaters were functional more than anything else to help him get past the section. His first turn was better than JJ's and his last turn was just as good as essentially what got him a 7.5. To me it doesn't really matter whether they scored it a 9.6 or a 7.6, as long as its a point higher than JJ's wave and two points higher than mick's fist wave i don't see a problem there.
      That power turn mick did at the end of the wave was just epic. It was the most powerful, critical thing either of them did. I know we have all seen it before but that doesn't change what it is. We've all seen an air reverse before. We've all seen a deep barrel before. Its still amazing.
      For example - is it predictable to get barreled at pipeline? Airs are great, but they are only going to be the new thing for another couple of years. You could argue JJ was predictable for not really doing much more than a couple of air reverse's all heat. Isn't that what he always does? I'm not bullshitting - there's a guy at my local beachie who does airs like that all day long. Try and find a power surfer like mick at your local. I know JJ's air game is probably the best there is - although gabe and even julian would have something to say about that - but these airs weren't much to write home about. Its not like he did a 720 or a backflip.
      I think we all get way too excited about an air - it has to be scored in context. If the air was perfectly executed with super high difficulty, it should definitely be scored highly. Sure. But an average air compared to excellent, critical, powerful on rail surfing, at a wave like Bells or J Bay? That makes no sense to me whatsoever. Otherwise we'd have nothing more than air contests.
      Anyway, i'm just glad you aren't a hater and actually have a real opinion. Most of the fucktards here just have their favorite guys and they bitch and moan about judging every time their guys lose, especially the Brazilians.

    • @MrBreakthompson
      @MrBreakthompson 7 лет назад +5

      You make some good points, no doubt.
      I think we both agree that Mick's wave deserved a high score but how high that score exactly should have been remains debatable. I think the tension, or disagreement on scores here indeed lies within this debate about air game vs. carve game. Yes i totally agree, it all the depends on the venue, context and execution. Imo, i thought the variety and fluidity of JJF's first wave is on par with Mick's high scored wave. It wasn't the best wave, but JJF made it look spectacular. And allthough he can also be predictable in his surfing, an air reverse is riskier to execute/land (especially mid wave) than a setup turn.
      Mick surfs absolutely phenomenal (i can only dream to surf like that) but don't you think it has become apparent that Mick doesn't take any risks with regard to airs/progression? Maybe this is also the reason why some think JJF got robbed. And to be honest, it is also the reason why i thought a 9.93 was too high for that particular wave despite being a venue at J-Bay.
      Also at Trestles, i noticed that Mick has a relatively strict style. This is by no means a problem (hell, Tom Curren never did an air in his life and he is till my nr. 1 surfer) . But will this remain enough for competition? If airs have become a standard in the repetoire, should Mick not come to terms with this if he wants to win another world title? After all, the judges do look for innovation and variation. And even more so, the crowds love innovation and considering WSL attempt to appeal to the masses we might have a future where airs are becoming increasingly more important. Are we getting comps with only airs? I hope not! And we probably won't, but still i think it will be a become a must for any pro surfer.
      Oh yeah, and don't get me started on some of those Brazilians and competitive surfing (or sport in general)... I cannot bare another fist claim from De Souza after an average wave :P

    @wsl PLEASE start allowing us to watch replays of the whole day! as it is now your contest playlists are unwatchable (heat recaps mixed with highlights = constantly watching same clips repeatedly.) also, there is no good way to watch a day of the contest back without spoilers. for J Bay it starts at 10:30 pm (not easy to watch live) for us in CA and I wish I could have watched this finals day without first thing upon logging on seeing who wins. I really don't like the way you aren't even putting up whole heat replays anymore. please just but the whole day straight up!

    Need some younger judges who appreciate innovation and creativity in surfing. Mick produced very similar-looking waves, they don't feel memorable to me. But I'm going to remember the wave of JJF's with an air going into two more great turns afterwards! A mis-judged heat in my opinion.

      I don't consider that safe surfing, and I get that wave selection counted (and still counts) a lot to score. But I got the feeling that a 9.93 on that wave, just because it was bigger, is a bit much... Maybe it's time to reconsider this wave selection factor. I don't know exactly how, because in places like Teahupoo I can see why getting a bigger wave is more valuable, because of the risk and difficulty, but not much in here. I don't know...

    No offense to Mick who's certainly a good surfer, but I find myself fast-forwarding through his waves and pausing to watch JJF's waves. Fanning surfs like a machine with his head and neck jetting out a foot beyond his board while he does turn after turn with a few heavy-footed floaters in between. In contrast, Florence looks relaxed and more creative, making him more fun (and impressive) to watch. If you're counting turns, then Mick won. If you're counting athleticism and style, then it's gotta go to Florence.

    • @chrisdavenportshoots7479
      @chrisdavenportshoots7479 8 лет назад +7

      Definitely more technical but it's a point break, not a short beach break. The judges score more off of hard carves, flow, and technicality. While jjf was more technical mick has more power speed and flow

    • @timblizzard4226
      @timblizzard4226 7 лет назад +3

      I don't think Jon Jon is more technical, exactly. He lays on his back foot more on a lot of his top turns which makes them beautiful and often critical, but that doesn't make him more technical - mick tends to blow the fins with more control. Mick's rail game is as technical as it gets. He just makes it all look so easy that people think he isn't trying, its his technique (balance and body position) that does that. If you just watch his board move without looking at his body its crazy how well he surfs, the way he generates speed through his turns, the variety and flow between turns, how much control he has when doing critical maneuvers. You have to look beyond how much someone throws their arms around.
      All that being said JJ's air game is amazing and i'd say they are both about equal in the barrel, but if anything Mick is the more technical surfer on rail.

    Mick's an amazing surfer and his carves are probably the best in the game, but he has no creativity and ingenuity. Every wave is the same from this guy. I don't think anyone that can't do an air in competition should win an event where airs are part of the repertoire. Once again, JJF is blasted in the a$$.

    • @MrWalkercl1
      @MrWalkercl1 8 лет назад +3

      that is so true, its almost as if mick holds back from trying to do big maneuverers and plays it safe just to finish a wave witout cockups because thats how judges nowadays give good scores he doesnt take the risk of attempting a big trick, i mean i havent seen the guy even attempt a trick that wasnt a roundhouse, floater or snap in a couple years. MICK is an amazing surfer but he needs to vary it up abit its just boring

    • @timblizzard4226
      @timblizzard4226 7 лет назад +9

      This whole idea behind airs being THE deciding factor is stupid - its only one part of surfing. So are barrels, so are turns. People like you want professional surfing to be an air competition. They exist if you want, go watch them.
      This is a walling reef break, and mick has a better rail game than JJ. At pipe, barrels matter. At Rio, airs matter. What you are effectively saying is the only thing that matters are airs. Did JJ get a super deep barrell? No? But how can he win a competition because tube riding is part of surfing isn't it?
      You guys need to realize that turns are the core of surfing - its what surfing is to 99% of actual surfers on the planet. That is what mick does arguably better than anyone else alive. Why wouldn't he be scored well for surfing so well at a wave like this? That's like saying you shouldn't win pipe without airs - its about the fucking barrel.
      p.s. mick can and has done airs in comp. So what? Wilko didn't throw an air at snapper, or bells. So he shouldn't have won then? Who gives a fuck about the best backhand surfing we've seen since Occy. Give it to Julian or JJF for the air reverse we've all seen a million times. how many airs to gabe throw at cloudbreak? None? Fuck him! Who cares about the epic tube riding.

      But JJF does throw crazy hacks and wraps, in fact he might have one of the craziest fs cutbacks out there right now. His ride at 5:50 proves that. Plus throwing airs at a venue that most don't think of trying should be a heighten insight on how progressive and gnarly his lines were.

    Hilarious that people think JJ should have won. You need more than small airs to win a final.

      Agreed. Far superior wave selection by Mick

      You guys are retarded John John had no time to perform those airs the only reason fanning won cuz he's all shook up from last year and they felt sorry

    Micks turns are on par🤙 John John carved like a little kid. The airs are cool, but.... rail game suffering. Looked like a kid surfing against a local ripper at his home break! Well scored and congrats to the power hacker! Mick harnessed way more power out of that wave than John John floating around like a butterfly with tap cutties.

    i'm not much of a mick fanning fan, i think he's boring, the 9.93 was to high, but.... JJF's waves were terrible and his airs were ugly, so mick won.....the scary thing is, JJF was off, and he still almost won, that kid is on another level
