Great tour of the backyard and benches! And what a fantastic conversation to listen in on. So relatable in so many ways. Cut and paste that audio into a Up North Bonsai podcast! Thanks for the shout out 😉.

Great interview! Two bonsai masters talking and enjoying bonsai. All you were missing was a cool glass of carrot juice. To hot during the day for tea or coffee.

The way Steve describes the source of creativity resonates extremely with me. This almost scary pressure to recreate a scene that you have seen once and make it alive and your own. It can be very hard to navigate such strong urges to express, and im pretty sure with the level of detail he puts in, he knows the feeling of frustration just as well as i do. But thats what makes him a real artist, and his penjings so authentic and not miniature kitsch like a puppet house.

Dave when you start talking about passing the trees from one person to the next you hit on the key. It is the "generational effect" that you are describing. Now, I don't mean Gen X,Y,Z, etc. I mean the provenance of the tree. The provenance adds something special that makes us appreciate bonsai.

Dave, you should try the trident maple. We are both zone 4b so there is a good chance it would survive. Maybe plant between houses out of winter wind??
