I love the multi-root exposed root tree! Is it a willow leaf ficus? It looks like a creature carrying babies on its back ***lovelovelove***
@@BonsaiDruid-qo9lo it is a Willow leaf!
As a newbie to bonsai every pre-bonsai I have is an ugly tree/plant/vine! Hobbyist can't have museum pieces in our backyards in the first few years.
Love a good ugly tree They can be disheartening if they don’t respond “correctly”. But they usually show me more than i think I know. As for polar plunges, sometimes I turn the hot water down a little when I’m showering. Does that count?
@@baldyeti not a chance does that count!!!!
Your son looks like if he was your father !
Love the dancers in the window wearing official Bonsai Acres hoodies!
I prefer the hot plunge....Like watching this video in the spa while it snows on my head. Getting out is the hard part. 😋
I do love me a wide bottom!!! Lol
Oh man that cold plunge must have been FREEZING! I’ve always wanted to try one of those cold tubs … I’m thinking of doing a polar plunge this year in one of my local rivers! So true about “ugly trees” … ugly trees make beautiful trees! Nice prunes!
Seems so long ago.
What a fun video. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year!
@@marklundquist-jw7eh Happy New Year!
Dave, love your support of Toby’s channel, but the plunge would be too much for me. I can find something hard to do in the morning that doesn’t turn my extremities blue. 😂 Ugly tree syndrome is a transitional stage. Sometime you have to make your tree a little ugly in the hope of beautifying it in the future. Happy New Year!
To cold for me -but thumbs up to you. Great to see you talk through the ugly trees we all have in 'our' collections. It is rare for me to give up on anything so I still have loads or work to do :)
congrats to your son! also, my opinion, theres never an ugly tree. thoughts on growing ports from cuttings? i need to trim mine.
@@airford13 I put all my cuttings in recycled bonsai soil immediately after cutting. Start watering very lightly 1-2 weeks later, and have 80-90% success.
Thanks Dave, for a good laugh on this my birthday, New Years Eve.
@@maryweber4176 happy birthday!!
@@DavesBonsai I actually skipped the big party. Infact, it was held at the farm in the barn right next to your original Bonsai Acres. Two of us on the same day, but my daughter and John attended. I stayed home where it is quiet, and watched bonsai videos.
Happy New Year 🎉
I recon just about all my trees are ugly. 😄👍🇦🇺🦘
Taking the PLUNGE!! Dave you continue to reinforce my assessment that you are the hardest working and now the toughest bonsai hobbyist on YT. Thanks for the entertaining show and best of luck to your son with his new channel!! 🎉
NLF, looks like a hand going into the soil with those roots. Cool!
That big hub on the hibiscus, I bet you can make it look better by doing a lightning strike on it some way. Like the top was hit by lightning. I wonder if there is a way you could simulate that, burn and all. Now that would make a great video for you.
Our ugly ducklings turn into a swan as time goes by.
I don't think they are ugly. I think they are unique in their own way. They look cool to me.
If your trees are ugly, mine are hideous monsters! 😆
😅😅
We all know your trees are not ugly...
For me there is no ugly bonsai.., just not perfected. Can’t believe you took the plunge it looked upsetting! The only way I could do it is with a Black label IV 😂 Happy New year Dave! All the Best to he’s plunging endeavors.
Dave is now a member of the Polar Bear club. Now, tea is in order for Dave after that plunge.
Happy New Year!!!!!!
Very brave Dave mate 😂😂 Happy new year to you and the family mate. Love the ugly bonsai 😂😂👊👊
Looks like you two had a blast out there! Very cool, Dave. You’re a lucky fella to have that oasis. Thanks for sharing your journey … Enjoy!
I hope to be sharing it with many in the years to come. Let me know if ever in MN.

Happy New Year!
@@stevenbonsai thank you so much! Happy new year to you as well!
I appreciate the super thanks!!!!!
I appreciate you - looking forward to a great 2025 for you and Bonsai Acres!
why don't you sleep in the shed?
Fantastic video Dave and Toby. Have the happiest and healthiest New Year ever. You’ll get the hang of the hammock at some point, and I think the porcupine should be called Porter.
Instructions? We don't need no stinkin Instructions...😅😅
Great info , the back up system I looked at was a cheap 12v system that went in my existing well casing, looking into this,
Great seeing the winter update dave. happy new year and all the best for 2025

Funny two guys without instructions. Of coarse it is going to be a mess👍😄🇦🇺🦘
@@bryanmorrion9503 but loads of fun!!!!
Bonsai Acres is such a neat concept...I don't know anyone that wouldn't love a place to get back to nature and get away form our ever decaying, loud, wasteful, disposable way of life...I love it in the woods or near a stream where the 'white noise' is the wind blowing through the trees or a babbling brook or stream...The solitude is addictive and renews the spirit within...I'm not sure that I could move into the deep forest and make a life but the thought of having a place to go to like Bonsai Acres is very enticing...I did a year of prep-school in Mound, MN and the wildlife and access to nature in Minnesota is second only to Alaska as far as I'm concerned...Well done Dave...I love that you are making the property as 'Off-Grid" as possible...Thanks for a great year of content, tips and inspiration and a very Happy New Year to you and your family...Sequim, WA...

I have found at times a lifetime warranty isn’t what it sounds like. As when it fails they can say well that must be the life of that unit. That is if it fails aways down the track. 🧐
Nice gift from your wife.
I think you are a bit short on the fence in the ground. I think it is about 1 to 2 foot out on top of the ground, covered with soil. That way it deters the rabbits from trying to dig under the wire to get in. Being that far out, the wire will discourage them from finding a way to get in. Just a thought.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 most of the chicken wire was placed a few inches past the bottom.
@@DavesBonsai You might have to go a bit deeper. I was just researching and found that rabbits being excellent diggers, wire has to be 6 inches deep, minimum and then bend it outward and cover. I was just worried about the trees you put it.
With the porcupine inside, how will you lock the door to the shed? With you placing items in the shed, you do not want someone coming in and stealing it. Maybe a doggy door for the Porcupine.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 so far I’m not worried about what’s inside. Thus sowing that will be one priority.
Will you be buying the solar batteries for backup on dark cloudy days for the pump? Nice reading for the winter months. This last week will fly by fast. End of year is always a downhill ride. Goes fast.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 backup batteries eventually
You're gonna have to start on drafting lots of diagrams until repotting season gets your attention. (That's what I do.) Lol. I'm listening to you and wondering if the pump system has wifi/mobile app, so you can control and check it from home. I just put in a radiant heat tape with wifi thermostat in my healing in bed/cold frame... and can watch the soil temp from anywhere. I love it. Love the Bonsai Acres footage too!
@@nicolejordan3270 stage two I’ll have WiFi to connect from phone anywhere.

porcupines do not shoot the barbs. they may swing their tail. then your hurting. but he wont bother you if you wont bother him. make him your friend, give him treats, you can both be neighbors, its all good.
@@airford13 we looked it up and found the same info. 😜👍🏻
im first! hi again Dave.
@@airford13 hey!!!!👋
Great pruning here, Dave. The 1st Zelkova look like they're in shipshape now. I agree with what you were saying at 4:18, I think snipping off that lower branch where you suggested would make it look great ... it'll add a bit of taper as well. I'll have to pick up a Zelkova one of these days. Both of the Zelkova forrests looks great as well ... some fast snips!
I really dont like how that looked at the end
@@3ktor123 I don’t disagree. Bonsai often look horrible before they can become beautiful. I hope it looks better in time as well. 🙂
