- Today we're going to check out some artworks by graphic artist Kristian Wåhlin also known as Necrolord. Kristian Wåhlin is a Swedish graphic artist known for his many extreme metal album covers. He is known for working with Bathory, Tiamat, Therion, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, At The Gates, Amorphis, Dark Funeral, Atheist, Necrophobic, Morgana Lefay, Protector, Dissection, Dark Tranquility, Dismember and a lot of other powe,r black, thrash and death metal bands from the 90's and beyond. Kristian 'Necrolord' Wåhlin is known for his mountain landscapes with castles and cathedrals of sorts. With lots of pentagrams and evil looking statues. He often works with the color blue in various shades. So in todays video we're going to check out some metal album covers made by Kristian Wåhlin. Enjoy!

I had no idea he was the paintbrush behind some of my favorite Bathory, Dissection and King Diamond album covers, this dude is trully phenomenal
indeed.
His art is just phenomenal, ever since I gazed at Dissection’s cover art on their first two albums, I instantly became a fan of Necrolord’s work. That man is a crowned jewel of Sweden’s metal scene.

I went to an exhibition of his the same night I saw Evergrey as they were playing at this annual tiny festival in northern Sweden. I only knew he did the cover art for King Diamond's "Voodoo".
Yeah he is an amazing artist and very well respected amongst more extreme underground bands. :)
Love his Tiamat artworks, but am I the only one thinking Crystal Age "Far beyond divine horizons" shares more than a similarity with Nocturnus "Thresholds"?

Wonderful artist! Thanks for the release. A little off topic though. At the time of my youth, there was a photograph of Paganini Horror. We thought that there is such a metal band, it turned out that this is a poster for the film.

With huge respect to all great rock and metal artworkers out there, to me Necrolord will ever be the best and my all time favorite. Superlative, stunning works of art. I love his definition and care even of the smallest details, on such complex and intricated works. Sometimes, better than the album itself! Great video, Ruthless! Cheers!

yes I will do his art some day too.
Naturally i have a number of these but never knew who did the artwork so thats interesting. The thing with artwork was in pre digital era (I was there) the cover was so important because as you did your regular rounds at the record stores you had no idea what bands sounded like unless you were following them prior because there was no internet to sample things so the cover would attract you to check out albums.

Not only that, Kristian Wahlin is also a guitar player. He and Thomas Lindberg formed 2 bands Grotesque and The Great Deceiver. Ironically, he did cover art for Thomas Lindberg's later band, AT THE GATES.

Glad you caught this one I definitely think that Necrolord is one of the best, most grim early death / black metal guitarists out there. It's bizarre that he never followed that path in life.

Yeah, he is the king of underground extreme metal art.
Around 15 years ago there were a hardrock convention in Malmö, where he showed some of his work. I recall two big oilpaintings, one of King Diamonds' Voodoo and one of Dissections' Storm of ghe Light's bane. Without logos and names, and if i remember correctly he said he started with a painting before turning them into album artworks. If you like the album covers you should have seen the paintings... wow. Love his artwork.

There is a humanistic quality to artwork actually made by people as opposed to AI. The artists leaves an impression of themselves on the canvas. With AI robots we are taking away the one thing that separates us from them- the ability to create something that never existed before with art and music. AI is only pretending to do this by replicating what we have already created. We have created our own demise, but that is nothing new for us humans.
