IMO, I really want to like that album more, but the rhythm section just doesn't do it for me with that production. Especially Bill Andrew's drumming. I know he also drums on Leprosy, but the huge gated drum sound on that album fills up more space and sounds more massive. His single kick patterns on SH just sound flat.

Maybe my rankings are more based on sentimentality. But, Leprosy demonstrates the emotion best. Emotion wears off🙂.
They were changing. It seemed more, unrefined, experimental. Not as ‘Pure’ as the first Three. That is just my feelings though.
I’m biased. I loved Leprosy, and Spiritual, when they came out. I was in 8-9th grade when Leprosy came out. And a sophomore in high school when Spiritual Healing came out. They are my top Death metal world, and Pestilence Consuming Impulse, at this Junctior of my life🤘🏽
And the first 3 were pure death metal
My reasons could probably be better explained. But Fuck that.🤣

1 Symbolic (best album I've ever heard, and still my favourite of all time. Lyrics, Drums, Riffs, Melodies, Solos.. The only flawless 10/10 I know of).
-From the iconic opening riff on Symbolic to Without Judgement's middle section and Perennial's beautiful outro, I love every second.
2 Human (The most intense album with great mix of riffs and melodies. 9.9/10).
-every track could be a highlight.. but See Through Dreams, Vacant Planets and Secret Face are seriously underrated (and my favourites)!!!
3 TSOP (A little long, but it has THE best melodies.. and the Painkiller cover is one of the few I accept, although A Moment of Clarity was a perfect closer. 9.7/10).
-From the complex Scavenger of Human Sorrow to the beautiful, emotional Story to Tell, every song could be a highlight..
4 Leprosy (Perfect lenght and it has the hardest riffs, vocals and Rick's frantic whammy solos fit. The best pure Death Metal record. 9.3/10)
-Pull the Plug, Open Casket, Leprosy, Born Dead and Left To Die are my favourites.
5 Individual T. Patterns (The most technical album with the best bass performance, but it has three "o.k."/ slightly sub-par songs imo.. 9.2/10).
-Trapped In A Corner, Jealousy, Overactive Imagination, Philosopher and Mentally Blind are my favourites.
6 Spiritual Healing (The worst production imo, the drums are so flat.. The riffs, shredding and UNDERRATED melodies rule, though. 9.0/10).
-Within the Mind, Genetic Reconstruction, Defensive Personalities, Title Track and Altering the Future are my favourites.
7 Scream Bloody Gore (The 2nd "worst" production, but it's still a punch to the throat! Awesome piece of history, but is mostly riff-riff-riff. 8.9/10).
-Evil Dead, Sacrificial, Zombie Ritual, Baptized In Blood and Torn To Pieces are my favourites.

This is a brave ranking to do, Death as you also state have no bad albums in their discography. Rarely can a band almost universally be agreed as not releasing a single dud, not one album that is frowned upon (Cannibal Corpse is another that ticks this same box for me, maybe even Bolt Thrower too)..anyway, Leprosy and Human are hard to split for me for different reasons but ask me in any week and the rest of the order could change but one thing that wont change is that Death as a band and Chuck as a person are sadly missed. You're right, Ruthless... there are no bad Death albums. Their discog is very much perfect. I can't help but rank The Sound of Perseverance as #1, personally. It's in my top 5, maybe top 3 music albums of all time. The composition of it is rarely matched. I don't really care what anyone else thinks concerning this... it's my opinion. And yes, I do know that a lot of the material on The Sound of Perseverance wasn't written to be released under the Death moniker but was used because of contract pressures. Still some of the best music laid down, ever. Just think what Chuck might be blessing us with today, were he here...

Not a bad list - sharing my thoughts on these:
    1. Spiritual Healing - a killer Bill Andrews' drums sound (the drums sound almost fucking (a-)live), there's a great contrast in approach to solos of (one and only) James Murphy and (also one and only) Chuck (btw it reminds me of Megadeth's Marty Friedman & Dave Mustaine dynamics); to me every song is a death-metal superhit and pure perfection; Chuck's solo in Altering the Future takes me to another dimension everytime I hear it
    2. Individual Thought Patterns / Human - a more commercial production, great musicians and great music; I really like the somewhat blurry guitar sound, as it adds to the overall impression the albums give me (especially Human); musically, ITP seems a tad more aggressive to me
    3. Leprosy / Scream Bloody Gore - absolute classics, foreshadowing Chuck's genius, but suffering from weaker production a bit; still great records to come back to
    4. Symbolic - as-if another version of Spiritual Healing (rhythm changes, songs composition, etc..), but with different production and occassional experimenation which disturbs me (e.g. the spanish guitar in Crystal Mountain); however, the title track and Zero Tolerance are my favourites and I listen to the album from time to time
But basically, all of the above are superb, with very little difference in preferences for each to me.
However, I can't say the same about the last one on my list:
    5. The Sound of Perseverance - sorry, folks, I do not like this record - I hate the fucking atrocity called vocals, the drumming seems to go for something super-heavy and ultra-artistic at the same time - and it just sucks - and the overall sound is just annoying for me; but most importantly, for me, the songs are just not good / boring to listen to
And let me add Control Denied to the list - without order:
a, The Fragile Art of Existence - quite an experimental record, somewhat difficult to listen to when going for death metal; it's an experiment with the DM genre as the form, but deviating from it musically; the vocals are also not the ones I cherish; btw - it's worth saying, that if #5 on my list sounded like this, I could tolerate it more 😃
b, Zero Tolerance - not really a polished product, but a haunting reminder of Chuck's talent / vision / musicmanship; first four tracks show his experimental side, the demos give an insight into the process of creating / fine tuning the songs for the first record

I agree with most comments that there isn’t a bad Death album. Obviously it’s just which you prefer over the others. I like SBG’s music but the lyrics aren’t for me, I just think lyrics about guts and maggots are just silly and over-the-top. Like I said the music is great (Evil Dead is in my top 3 favorite Death Songs). 3-6 to me are interchangeable, any one of them can be higher or lower depending on which I like more that day lol. But 1 and 2 will never change, Symbolic and Human are my favorites with Symbolic given the slight edge because it’s the first Death album I listened to and made me the Death fan I am today. Besides the outro to Perennial Quest is the most beautiful piece of music Chuck wrote.

the only diferent choice i made is to put individual though patterns more down on the list. Incredible album, but one of the weakest efforts of the band in my opinion, because looks like they made in this album a mid-term "transition" between some traditional death metal for more progressive death. But their discography is simply perfect, all albuns are good in one way or another. Spiritual Healing is my favorite, specially because of their lyricism and production. It is good you talk about pleasure to kill influence in scream bloody gore, since one of the songs of death's first album literally took one of the riffs of pleasure to kill! I don't know if it's intentional, but looks like a tribute or something

In 1995 I was 15 years old and quite exclusively into Maiden, Metallica and grunge. Until I heard the song Symbolic on a compilation album. I was blown away! Got the album and was blown away even more! It is one of my all time favourite albums to this day.
I was very much into Perseverance when it was released, but the production kept me from liking it as much as Symbolic.
Over the past years I have been aprreciating Human more and more, in my opinion the production of that album is near perfect. Especially if you're into f*ckin' amazing drumming! A masterpiece.
However much I like Gene, I can never get over the sound of his bass drum on Individual. Such a huge contrast compared to Sean's on Human. It's why I never listened to Individual as much. Good thing Gene sounded great on Symbolic.

Symbolic, my god Symbolic. For me it's the best Metal album of all time, I can't name anything I dislike from this album not even a second on any song. I've heard this album for like 15 times and I still can't stop listening to it. The riffs, solos, vocals, drums, clean riffs it is just an album made for me haha.
    The list:
    1. Symbolic
    2. Leprosy
    3. Individual Thought Patterns (used to dislike this album but now I enjoy quite a bit, even bought a vinyl version of it)
    4. Spiritual Healing (the first Death album I heard from the start to finish and my first Death metal vinyl, really love James Murphy's playing he's style makes this album for me)
    5. The Sound of Perseverance
    6. Human
    7. Scream Bloody Gore
As Ruthless Metal said, Death's discography is just perfect, I couldn't agree more, so even the lowest album for me is still one of the best albums for me. Really love all of their songs, that's why Death is my favourite band, every albums feels different, but is still so good. I really can't describe my love for this band.

"ITP" was the very first Death album I ever listened and bought (or bought and listened to, lol), waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1994. How did I hear of such a deserving band, you ask? It started with Modern Drummer and Pantera, LOL! I missed the cover story on Vinnie Paul from August of '94 but I got an issue a month or two later and I was one of those nerds who loved to read the WHOLE magazine. So I used to read the letters to the editor they used to have, and one of those letters was addressing the prior cover feature of Vinnie, and how MD labeled him a double bass master, or something. This person was annoyed and "challenged" MD and other readers to listen to an album called, "Individual Thought Patterns" by a band called Death with a drummer on it who goes by the name of (ready?): GENE HOGLAN. This guy really talked up the album and Gene's playing in particular (and was rather denigrating to Vinnie's). So I went to Zia Records (I lived in Phoenix) and found a used copy of the album on CD, and was amazed at not only Gene's playing and double kick work but the music in general. Now, this was NOT my first foray into death metal: I owned at that time Amon's (pre-Deicide) second demo, "Sacrificial" and Vengeance Rising's last album was, more or less, death metal with a thrash influence. I also had the second Living Sacrifice album, "Nonexistent"... so, I was somewhat familiar with the idea of death metal, though by no means as much as I am today. "ITP" will always hold that "place in heart" (lol) as being the first intro to Chuck and his world of metal, with Death and later Control Denied (at that time, I had no clue as to Mantas - or Voodoocult or Slaughter). The band Death became a massive influence and staple, and of course, led me to other known death metal bands: Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Gorguts, Pestilence, and a bunch of others. I already knew who Deicide was due to the Amon demo I had at the time. When you stated Death has no bad albums, you were right on. Personally, I'd rank "Human" (gee, what a shock) as my personal fave, but all Death's albums would be a No. 1 for me. The one album I don't listen to as often is "Symbolic", which is the time frame I first got to read a story Modern Drummer did about Gene Hoglan. I didn't know Gene was in Dark Angel (shame on me at that time, like a big DOH!) but I knew the man could play! Death will, for better or worse, always be my number one metal band, death metal or otherwise. Chuck just had a way about him, now that I've been able to see his interviews and so forth. He didn't care if he was "metal enough" for everyone else, he played what he liked, he had his influences and if you didn't like it -then go find another band. He was a chill, laid-back guy but took his music and playing seriously. I so very much appreciate your vids, Ruthless Metal -not just this one but all of them, even if I may not agree with some of your conclusions or rankings or whatnot. You speak your mind, you have high production values, and most of all: you value metal highly. And that's all I need. Cheers!! \m/

I predicted you'd have scream bloody gore as your number. I was close.
My number one would have been symbolic followed by human. I just love those mind twisting chord progressions.

Death is my fav band so it's really hard for me to rank the albums. For me they are all between 9,9 and 10 out of 10.
But Symbolic, Leprosy and Human are the ones I listen the most.
My 3 fav Death songs are Perennial Quest, Pull the plug, Lack of comprehension
Chuck will be forever missed. What a genius!!!
