- In 2006 as a student with a love for American photography, particularly American documentary portrait photography, I travelled to the Texas Hill Country to make a photo-essay shooting my Bronica SQ-A and made some medium format film photographs.
17 years later I finally made a self-published photo book of that work. At that point I was making the transition from street photography to documentary photography and my way in was making documentary portrait photography.
In todays episode I share some of best portraits I made back then and talk through some of the stories behind them. I'll be looking at my photo book 'When In The Lone Star State' which was published earlier this year (2023). You can buy a copy for £40 here: edwardthompson.co.uk/When-In-...

Love environmental portraiture like this. Vibes of one of my faves, Alec Soth. Great stuff.
Nice reflections on Photography Ed, and funny too , a bonus!
By the way the song is 'No Time to Cry ' by Iris Dement . A great singer but very emotional songs , a tear may be shed when listening to her music.
Thanks Brian
Ahhh I always assumed that song was written by a man. I guess Danny Jerry's cover of that song made me hear it that way and then that stuck. Thanks for the kind words, it made my day.
A super and heartfelt video. Your book looks excellent too.
Thanks Paul! Too kind
That opening shot made me think this was a goodbye video! 😆
I know what the algorithm wants and I will not comply with them!
Great video, wonderful insights, lovely work, happy Christmas.
Thanks Simon! Happy Christmas to you and yours too! I'm planning to squeeze in a cheeky Christmas episode which I film tonight!
Great portraits and wonderful stories. Thanks, Ed.
Thanks Nigel!
I think you're right - as photographers we tend to undervalue what some images mean to others, until we ourselves experience loss. The images that we've taken with personal connections then become so much more important. It's happened to me when I've lost people and pets - and now I've reached 70 I appreciate the images I've taken over the last 50-odd years in a different way. A thought provoking video, Ed.
Yes, some of my most cherished photos are tatty 6x4 inch prints where the negatives are long gone. They are just sat by my desk.... Come to think of it I should probably get them framed! Merry Christmas Nic and thank you
Have a good one Ed 😀
Love the stories, Ed. Especially with your 2 shots.
Thanks Cyril. The whole truth is stranger than fiction bit 🤣 AI can't do that!
@PicturesOnMyMind Dude I binge loads of you videos. While warming up after going in my Cold water therapy pod, bloody 1 degree this morning (Cold wasn't the word 😁) but watching your video with Claudia. Been thinking for yrs and yrs now. People love looking at happy weddings, party's everyone having a great time. But I've never seen any funerals ones. Like Claudia doing the grave diggers. But when I have been to funerals, I always hear. How you doing haven't seen you for yrs or the only time we ever see each other is at funerals. I always thought it would be good to shoot these. So family and friends could look at in their own times. Just to reflect back on the day. But death is a thing we never talk about, not like the living times which we all talk about.
Nice video Ed, great stories. Very moving.
Thank you Martin. Comedy & tragedy, right?
Loved the video and your work. This year I self published via Kickstarter so I know the work you have put in. Congrats. Is there a link to purchase the book?
Thank you, yes it is a rollercoaster getting a book funded, let alone made! I really should have put a link to get the book in the text of the video shouldn't I? Gah! Anyway, here it is edwardthompson.co.uk/When-In-The-Lone-Star-State
I hope this comment helps the algoritm ting ;)
It's a Christmas miracle!!!
