I have difficulty learning songs. This has more to do with my mental ability than my talent. I usually end up writing out the song in either tablature form or music notation to help with my memory. I must also practice the song many times with the sheets I created in front of me. I wish there really was a quicker and easier way for me to learn songs.
1. What's the drummer doing with his right hand: 1/4 notes? 1/8 notes? Any special pattern? On the hi-hat? Opened or closed? Ride? Any bell action? Crashes? Playing on the toms? 2. What's the drummer doing with his left hand: 2 and 4? 1 and 3? All downbeats or all upbeats? Any special pattern on the e, the & or the a (1/16th notes and 1/8th notes)? Any ghost note action? 3. Kick drum: Basically just follow the kick drum pattern of that section... That's what I do to get the basic rythm of a section down. Then you can add your little twist to it with more ghost notes on the snare, more carefully places kick drum hits, etc... Know the song structure, this comes easily by listening to the song over and over. Know where the punches are, where the pauses are, etc... For the fills I usually improvise unless I really enjoy the actuall fill of the song and I feel like it really belongs there. Those are tips for learning cover songs by the way, let's say you want to play im bars and whatnot..
How to learn a song in five minutes!! Lol! This gentleman is brilliant. First listen to the song!! Wow!! How very helpful, I'm glad I watched this video for that alone. Secondly; listen to the drummer see what he's doing. Wowzers again!! This revolutionary teaching and also is a huge revelation to me. Lol OK, that's some pretty nasty sarcasm but let's be honest here. Some songs are already between five and seven minutes. So there goes your five minutes just listening to the song once Then he says write notes. That takes time and then figure out what the guys doing? And you actually have to play along once or twice everything right? That requires more time. Once on stage un gotta know this think unless you're extremely gifted you cannot accurately learn any medium to complex song in five minutes. I have a video of that Cobus guy and it took him a lot longer to run in the song than five minutes. OK, I know I got this video for free but it is false advertising, you have to agree.
He says you'll learn how to learn a song in 5 minutes, that's the length in this video, he doesn't say you'll learn a song in 5 minutes, use your common sense man, obviously you can't learn a song in 5 minutes, I mean some people can, but the length of a song in general is a little less than 5 mins, then you gotta play and do all those tips he says to do, obviously he knows you can't learn a song in 5 mins, don't be a hater, this video is probably for beginners and intermediate players, these tips are actually helpful, go and hate somewhere else

If I don't already know the song, I find learning parts at a time and only moving on once a part is playable in practice(15-20 min) then connecting to next part in practice till song is nailed, 1-2 hours ish. Practiced probably 20+ times, but by then even with practice few days away it's clear. Now it's good for years to come
+garlicson For the odd time stuff, play the basic 4/4 beat but just add or substract the necessary notes, no need to worry about groove, displacement, or polyrhythms. As for fills, RLRLBB is your ticket to about 90 % of it.

Your meter & tempo are one & the same... they may change during arrangement movements of verses to chorus to bridge, but that is how song comp. is! Break down of a song: Intro - 1st Verse - 1st chorus - 2nd Verse - 2nd Chorus - Bridge - usually an outro chorus/ but 3rd Verse/ Chorus sometimes.

Half & Whole notes you don't need to concern yourself with playing on any drum- a drum sustains for up to a Qtr. note! I called it in at the end of 2021 and I said I want to play music more and I want to be in a band and within a week I auditioned with four bands. .. some were not my style of music... that didn't matter to me so much because I liked the challenge. . When I went to this one rehearsal I asked for a sheet music of the song so I could make note of what was going on ... delete the bass player said drummers don't read music.. I kind of thought yeah we do.... stomped out my way of learning..... at that point I realized I don't want to play music with these people they're kind of rude.... I had never been to an audition like this before I have been in more professional settings..... me to come through the door and know their song within 5 minutes as if they were some top 10 amazing artist or some s***..... and I had the bass guy telling me what to do and I really wanted the lady whose music it was 2 to work it out with me but he kept interrupting and telling me what to do and she was also taking the drumstick from me banging on the hi-hat and singing her song telling me what to do and they both had two different directions and by then I was already turned off and I was like I really don't want to play with these people they're not that professional they're kind of ego maniacs and they make rude remarks..... and I realize there's a million songs out there that I would love to learn and play music with quality people.... and a couple days later you know.... I end up in the company of these two sisters and one of them's a waldorf educated sister so her idea of creativity was in alignment with me and I asked her could I have the words in the lyrics to your music so I can listen to it and make sense of the drum part that I would like to incorporate into your song..... so she brought that to the next rehearsal and it was awesome you know because then I could see the words get a feel for the emotion of the song I could see where the parts are going to take off and build up and where the crashes need to be and where I need to hold it steady and... and I really liked the way the whole band was polite and they were on the same page as me and they are quality multi-instrumentalist and it feels good that I am now drumming for them and I realized when you are going to an audition you are qualifying them as much as they are qualifying you and also I learned what I can bring to the table as far as my attitude is open willingness to learn and support somebody's music and art is good character of myself...... the other thing that turns me off about the first band was they asked me to study a song and then when I showed up they pulled the rug right out of my feet and put another song on the table...... and then bombarded me with what to do what to do what to do try this try this do this do what you feel just do what you want have you actually played before?? All in 5 minutes of my being there.. .. so I realized that these guys are not quality musicians and they have a lot to learn .... I don't care how many RUclips videos they're posting they just don't have that star quality.... when I left the building there was no way that they could damage me or knock me off my Throne so to speak.. . but it was definitely a learning experience and the people that I would want to play music with I learned that lesson that day. so the people that I am playing music with now are amazing and they're good people and they're not rude they're not egomaniacs and I think that comes through when you take the mic.... music is to connect us not disconnect us... blessed. the new band that I am in supports me in my way that I want to learn because when it's all completed they're satisfied with what I'm bringing to the table so it's a really good exchange of energy. ... they allow me space to learn and process and perform...... so some people are auditory learners and some people are visual learners and some people are feeling emotions very deeply when they play and they play from feeling.... so I was really glad to have this experience and share it because remember.... you are qualifying them as much as they are qualifying you. ... everybody learns differently. ... I don't like to be around people that smoke cigarettes and are on a bad diet and are just straight out rude condescending rude rude rude...... so I hope that this helps somebody and inspires somebody and helps somebody feel human and connected.

Repetition! That’s key.
