In today’s episode, Becket chats with J Warner Wallace about his new book, “The Truth in True Crime: What Investigating Death Teaches Us About the Meaning of Life.”
In his book, Wallace explores the clues lying behind our human nature as he uncovers fifteen life-truths gleaned from both contemporary murder investigations and ancient Biblical wisdom, among them human beings were created:
    For worship
    For community
    To pursue humility
    To seek justice and mercy
Wallace uses his experience as a homicide detective to give one-of-a-kind look at human nature, the struggles we face, and how each of us desires and seeks Truth. By highlighting details of real-life death investigations, Wallace invites readers into the drama, only to find out what really matters in the end.

    ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

Constantly raising the bar. I suspect this is one reason why LGBT is so popular. If one slakes one's lust often enough, it no longer satisfies, hence raising the bar.

Thank you Becket and JW, for this Christ-honoring interview. It’s nothing to be ashamed of to know how much God has used both of you to impact many lives for His kingdom, but I appreciate JW’s conscientiousness about staying humble and making it all about the Lord and not himself. I know He will honor that sincere desire and continue to bless your ministry. I pray for you both as well as other faithful voices I’ve enjoyed listening to on RUclips (of all places) that the Lord will protect you and keep you from falling. Thanks for being lights in this world of darkness

Hey Becket 👋 I grew up in University Park and ended up at ESD! We belonged to St. Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church. (AKA St. Minks and All Cadillacs)
My parents attended Cursillo back in early 70’s. Long story short Dad became a born again Christian. We left St. Michaels and attended Church of the Resurrection (now defunct).

I have to chuckle at the timing of me listening to this episode today-hear me out on this please 😉 Today my family was flying back from a vacation to Brazil and one of the airports was DFW that we flew from. During our 5 hour layover, I joked with my husband that I was going to keep an eye out for a Becket sighting bc you’re from Dallas if I remember correctly. I didn’t think that bc I think of you as a celebrity. I see your humbleness in your life and know that Jesus is the real celebrity. Meeting you would be awesome though bc your testimony reminds me of God’s power and what it can do in a person’s life🎉🎉🎉 And this is what I pray for concerning my family affected by the lgbtq topic. Just trying to offer a different perspective-God is who I worship but your story gives me hope. ❤❤ Thank you 🙏

Elizabeth Elliot talks about how people want to find themselves - she quotes Goethe who said ‘I don’t know myself, only God knows who I am and may God deliver me from ever finding out’ So Goethe obviously had an insight on how dire our natures are

Becket, you have to know that this was very hard for me to listen to. Why? Because of a certain person that’s been in my life, a certain family member who has been difficult to like, much less love. I have tried to be gracious, and for a time, it’s okay, until the time comes when I’m ignored or this person is rude to me. I’m not going to say that it’s only been one-sided, I have also shown my anger towards this person, it’s been as a reaction. I sincerely wish that this person wasn’t in my life, but I know I was placed in this situation to help this person have a deeper relationship with God, my own faith has been tested in a way that’s been very unexpected. And yes, pride has hindered us both. Nevertheless, I will not give up and I will speak gracious truth to this person when it’s needed. I don’t expect a friendship, just respect and have my life be an example of what God can do in our hearts. I’m still a long way, but I’m doing this for Jesus.

So many comments to make. I have definitely struggled with the celebrity thing. I'm still unknown, and have avoided becoming famous, but the time may come when I get pushed out in front. My personal solution to this for now is to pray for humility before and after each talk I give, and to have a few people praying for me. Of course even asking someone to pray for you in this regard is a "humblebrag" so you need to ask one of the "deep divers". I can only write this post without humblebragging because I'm not famous!

I too wish I could go back and change so many things. With age comes wisdom for sure. Hindsight is 20/20. Most younger people today don’t listen to advice from their elders, but there are some exceptions.
Regarding older crimes it’s fascinating to see so many of them solved through ancestry DNA databases. There are many convictions of very old men that thought they got away with the crime(s). In some cases the person has already passed away and some committed suicide not too long after the murder(s), rape(s), etc. They find them through their offspring and living relatives. In the case of rape they often took DNA from a rape kit and once DNA databases became available they opened cold cases and found a match. I can only imagine all the technology has many criminals shaking in their boots. Most were men, but there were some women in the ones I have watched, but these days women are committing more crimes. In finding the culprit, he’s right about three proximity principle, but sometimes it was a very random crime and out of the blue.

Some pop psychology from a non-psychologist. I think women like true crime for the same reason kids like dinosaurs. Knowing a lot about a scary topic makes them feel like they have some control over it. My wife is always pointing out how women need to be more concerned about personal security than men.

As a woman, I can confidently say we like true crime because we find it valuable to learn from real life situations where real women like us were tortured, raped, and murdered, so we can glean some information about how to avoid such situations in our own lives.
We're told our entire lives that things like that can happen to us. We like to know how to protect ourselves and spot warning signs in predators.

Becket you were a very gracious host. I labored through to listen but the show was hijacked. Unfortunate because I’ve gotten a lot from him when he puts out his work. I didn’t realize he had this ‘doesn’t play well with others’ mode. It seems to me there aren’t enough soapboxes to go around. Ironic it dealt so much with humility. Good job Becket on everything I’ve heard. Please keep it up.

I read that quote too and my immediate thought was: that wasn't God who told you that. It was Satan.
Matthew chapter 4 tells us how Jesus responded to Satan's offer to make him famous...

    Dear Brother Becket
God understood that He had to become human so we can know Him and follow His living examples, so that we would be able to live on earth as in heaven
To be able to achieve that, He gave us His Church and His authorized shepherds, to help and guide us on our journey on earth
He is truly present in His Church, at His dwelling place on earth (Tabernacle), as He had said that He will be with us until the end of time
He invites us to unite with Him everyday at His dwelling place on earth, in the celebration of the Eucharist (thanksgiving)- the marriage supper of the Lamb
    John 6
53 So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 Those who eat My flesh and drink My blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for My flesh is true food and My blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat My flesh and drink My blood abide in Me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats Me will live because of Me.
Honor Him by accepting His invitation!

Several things in this comment go against what's written in the New Testament.
In the New Testament we are told numerous times that Jesus sits at the right hand of God and that he indwells true believers (2 Corinthians 13:5) through the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17, Romans 8:9, 1 Corinthians 3:16 etc).
There's NOTHING in the New Testament about him being anywhere else.
You are trusting in the tradog man.
I also suggest you read the warnings in 1st John 4:2-3 & 2nd John verse 7.
That'll the EPISTLES of John (not the Gospel although obviously it needs to be known too!).
Everyone I meet who has wrong ideas about God and His son and Messiah ("God's anointed one") do not know the New Testament and have never read - or barely read - the epistles of John.

You are a patient host Mr. Cook! I was tense the entire interview because JWW rarely came up for air, overtalkng your comments. Like this is the Becket Book Show after all 😅😅
Would’ve been courteous of him to edit his responses, actually listen to not only your questions but your commentary in his answers.
I am most definitely a JWW fan but the interview felt like a gianttrt run on sentence.
LOVED the exchange about humility ~ will likely grab the book.
    Informative nonetheless!
