- Eugene Goossens - Oboe Concerto, Op.45
Year/Date of Composition : 1927
Instrumentation Solo: oboe

2 horns (F), trumpet (C), xylophone, glockenspiel, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, gong
celesta, harp, strings
This concerto is so under appreciated.
I totally agree, and I love the complex harmony this piece is based on using the whole tone scale! It's a bit like Debussy, but even more out there!
badly written for the instrument. too short. nothing to remember. so... appropriately appreciated.
Why all the negative comments? This is a thrilling, heart on sleeve concerto. At times, wistful and romantic and it never overstays its welcome. Heard it live conducted by Roger Lubbock and a student orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall in about 1990. Also on the programme VW sym no.5 and Delius On hearing the first cuckoo. Brilliant! If you like that sort of thing that is.
Lmao did anyone even read the music?? Cause I've never seen so many accidentals in a piece that wasn't written by Nelhybel 😂 I think people are underestimating the difficulty by a lot. It's really wistful and playful like you said, too. Takes a lot of control to pull this off -- trust me. I totally agree with you lol not sure why anyone would hate on this.
I still really enjoy this concerto. Bravo!!
Magical, stunning and wonderful! Thanks for this!
Beautiful concert and sound. ❤
This is soooo goooood.
On p. 201 of Wittgenstein's Vienna we find: "...the Eugene Goossens oboe concerto supposedly inspired by Wittgenstein's Tractatus..." I asked Allan Janik what he knew about this and he said it was Toulmin who put this in and he didn't know anything about it. Any thoughts?
I think it's a great concerto. Beautiful pastoral atmosphere. Sounds similar to RVW and EJM. but plenty of diffences to have his own statement. I sure enjoy it. Thanking You Much !
RVW and EJM, yes, but maybe also ZYM and MMB? And even EVE?

It reminds me the first violin sonata of Ravel.
If I had got this music some years ego…
Wow!
Below someone asks who the oboist is? This is stated to be 12 oboe pieces by the famous Elaine Douvas, not the name they mentioned.
??? How you get 12 oboe pieces out of a one movement concerto bewilders me.
This is Nancy Ambrose King
That's my fam

김재곤 thanks so much!
11 minutes concerto? mmmm.... maybe... concertino at least?
Lmao 11 minutes of oboe is like.... 47 minutes of any other wind instrument 😂 and not to mention the years it takes off your life.
absolutely do not like her sound at all. it's not centered and focused rather wild. she plays notes. who cares
Hmmm, who is your favourite oboist then? Just interested in who you think is a good oboist?
@@CommunistBearFighter Diana Doherty не плоха. Вообще же неожиданно интересные комментарии под данным видео. Не часто вижу такое.
@@ivasivv (sorry i don't have a russian keyboard) yes I'm a fan of her. I'm not sure what you find interesting about the comments under this video, they're very generic.
Are you kidding? It's open, warm, and resonant. She has good control.
Oh God... once again some Cow Pat School music... it really doesn't go anywhere, as most of the British music.
Lorenzo Pone LoL.
I think high schoolers are the last ones that would play a piece like that
Actually someone used it to win a youth concerto competition.
The UK does not have many profilic composers but the ones that are well known produce some excellent music...Maybe you don't realise because a lot of them don't have typically British names, but the Planets suite by Holst would be the most famous...but also give Elgar's Dream of Gerontius a listen (can't accuse that of not going anywhere, it literally gets to the gates of heaven), and Vaughan-Williams' oboe concerto...
@@andrewphillips-hird3761 Unfortunately the oboe concerto by Vaughan Williams is exactly one of the compositions that makes me say English music doesn't go anywhere. I'm sorry. Holst's Planets, of course I know them and I know he is British. Perhaps his Planets are his best work, but let's take a look to other of his things... I personally found an authentic voice in George Butterworth.
Meh. Music doesn't go anywhere. Big yawner.
Booooo, all u guys do is come here and complain
