Thanks sarah your amazing can you please continue this series as I’m a newbie to canning and not only are u amazing your easy to understand‼️ thank you for taking time out to make these videos my husband and I are addicted to your Chanel and watch an episode every night before bed‼️
Ball, Kerr, Bernardin, and Golden Harvest are all the same. I make them. Thank you for supporting my livelihood and thank for great and informative videos.
If you have a food saver, you can reuse those lids. I have found that when I use a new lid with my food saver, they don't work as well as if the lid has been used for canning. Just a tip for those that dry things and use a food saver.
I got like 4 boxes of jars out of my friends barn when I’m he bought his house just stuff the old owner left behind all brand new boxes just now using to make homemade butter in and keeping the buttermilk too
I didn't realize the lids were only used once but I've never actually canned anything. You make it seem so less complicated than I always thought it was. Thank you for the video! 🐱🐾
I use my used canning lids to vacuum seal dehydrated food and herbs (without rings) and for everyday items like brown sugar, flour, cold water or vitamin water in the fridge (with rings). So they don't go to waste.
@@LivingTraditionsHomestead Please do a video on this! I'm a new subscriber and going back and learning from your older video. With Covid, I strongly feel I need to learn how to preserve dry goods safely for the long haul. I currently have flour, sugar, etc in canning jars but haven't vacuumed sealed them. This is new to me. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and journey.. Sending love and much appreciation from a newbie in GA
If you don't have a rack for your water bath or even pressure canner you can put a washcloth in the bottom or even use jar rings in the bottom to keep the jars from sitting directly on the bottom of the pan and the glass breaking.
Great video. I love how detailed you are. I’ve always been afraid of canning because of the risks but I’m going to watch your videos and try it this year. Your attention to detail and safety gives me the info and courage I need. Thank you!🌞
So excited about this series. While the lids cannot be used more than once for canning, don’t discard them. They can be used again for vacuum sealing with a food saver.
I like the wide mouth jars just because they're all the about the same price and there's no requirement to can anything in the regular mouth jars, but there are things you really don't want to can in a regular, like meatloaf. Therefore, if all I buy is wide mouth, I'll never find myself in a situation where I won't have a wide mouth if I really need it.
Great video. Just wanted to add that there are Tattler reusable lids you can use. Can't tell u how well they work cuz I haven't used them yet. I think Road to the Farm and Homesteading Family have videos on those.
I have been watching this video for over 13 minutes and I just noticed the row of cast iron skillets behind you. I searched high and low, scouring thrift shops and yard sales for about two years for a cast iron skillet before I finally broke down and bought a new one. (I bought the Pioneer Woman Preseasoned one though so that wasn't so bad.) You have five right there!! It's so true that once you get one, you never want to part with it but seriously, do you need five?!?!
There is/was a 3 cup jar. It was wide mouth. I have a few but I'm not sure they still make them. I've been canning for 17 years and bought all of mine from estate sales. Including a few antique ones.
I would suggest at least placing a tee shirt in the bottom of your canning pot if you don't plan to use the rack. I know someone who has canned for 50 years and she recently was canning tomatoes without the rack or anything in the bottom of the pot, and a jar exploded. She ended up with tomatoes and broken glass sprayed all over her kitchen. It was a cleaning disaster! She said she had never had this happen before.
We can a lot on our homestead. I think this will be a great series you are doing. I will watch it because it never hurts to review and hear what someone else is doing. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
I love to use the 4 oz jars for my dried herbs since I can re-vacuum them to help keep fresh using my seal-a-meal with the attachment. It's been a long time since I did canning but I do use the jars for my dry goods since I can bring things home get them out of the store packaging and into glass that I vacuum seal. So much prettier on the shelf and less chance of bugs ( I had been over run with ant's a few yrs ago and that's what started me using the jars for dry goods)
Until I was grown, I didn't know you weren't supposed to reuse lids. My grandmother and mother reused lids as long as they weren't bent. Neither of them ever had any canning failures. Of course, Mom and Grandma didn't really have a choice but to reuse everything. Times were hard. But I'm a by-the-book person, not a risk taker, so I don't reuse them.
Thanks Sarah!! New to canning (like 5 or 6 batches) practicing for my garden harvest..I want to be comfortable and more confident. I have watched a lot of videos but your series is going to be sooo much better!! Like the rabbit series!! Very helpful. Love the way you explain things.
Good day to you Sarah !! I got my two different canners and the jars and lids, so all I need is the canning accessory pack and I'll be ready to go !! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us !!
Another great video, Sarah! Think my wife needs a couple pots and books and she’ll be good to go. I know she has done some canning with friends and has the accessories. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Thanks again, and God bless!
Good summary of what is needed. Thanks. One way I differ from you is in using plastic items for hot food - I'd rather use stainless steel. I've found stainless steel funnels instead of plastic (the plastic one became a bath toy) and just use a dinner knife as a tool for getting air out. At least one of the books you showed is sold in Canada - not as the Ball book - but as the Bernardin book. If this series is as good as your rabbit series, we're in for an educational treat.
oneproudnana was told, so I'm sharing, not to use metal utensils in jars I'll can with so we don't scratch or etch the glass compromising integrity. Try a rubber spatula...
Just subscribed to ur channel, love you guys n @ 70 years old n need to learn to grow my own, cannot afford to buy vegetables @ high store prices on limited income.
Thank you for video I use ball tools too and i love it but one thing I dint know was that we only can use the lids ones that’s why when I try to canning with the same lids for second time didn’t pop in thank you 🌹
Very difficult to get a pressure canner in my country, one has to import via Amazon and it is VERY expensive, so I am sticking to fermenting and will try waterbath canning for the appropriate foods. I like fermenting but since I am a single widow, it means I cannot ferment too much at a time as I cannot use it that fast, so it's a possibility then, to do some waterbath canning as well
Sarah, on the wall behind you in this video, there is an oblong cast iron pan. I had one similar to it, but lost it in Hurricane Harvey. Where did you get yours? I've been searching for a while, now.
Hi Sarah, I have just taken up canning and I am using a large stockpot and starter kit from Ball’s. The recipes from Ball’s book speak of placing the jars in the rack above the simmering water. As I have no rack that is placed above the simmering water can you just put them in the water filled pot until you can increase the heat? Or can you leave them out of the canner until you have all the jars ready? Eveline from Scotland
Ball and Kerr are owned by the same parent company. I wish I could recall the name. We don't shop at "china mart" in our neck of the woods. There is a video by "Bexar Prepper" where she made her own rack utilizing ole canning rings.
I have experimented with water bath canning and was thinking about upping my game to pressure canning. Because I like to get different uses out my equipment, I had heard that the large instapot can be used for pressure canning as well. Would you share your thoughts on this please?
I'd like to make this jelly but add some jalapeno chunks to it and maybe some juice to make it a grape jalapeno combination can you tell me where in this process I should add the jalapenos and how much I should use
I began to look at another home canner. Tonight she spoke about canning lids from china. Do you buy canning lids that were made in china? She says they are not reliable. That they can pop open after the jars have been put away. I'd like to hear your opinion on this, and have you ever had a properly canned jar's lid pop open after a jar has been put up for storage.
Do they still make two quart jars? It's probably been thirty years since I've canned, and that was water-bath canning tomato juice. I know they had two quart jars then because that is what my mother-in-law and I were using.
+Diana Lucas at Justus Acres Oh darn, I knew that! I guess I misspoke. Well, I'll clarify in the actually canning videos. Thank for catching that, Diana.

Just a note: I store a lot of dry goods in canning jars too and I use the used lids on those jars if they wash up odor free!
Ball, Kerr, Bernardin, and Golden Harvest are all the same. I make them. Thank you for supporting my livelihood and thank for great and informative videos.
Thank you so much. I wish I could can with you. You seem like such a fun, beautiful person. I'm so excited to continue this canning series! :)

Wow! So so informative and clear! Anyone who needs to learn...MUST WATCH THIS VIDEO
I’m forty years old and I’ve been canning for a long time. The information you have given is excellent for a beginner.

You can use canning rings placed around the bottom as a makeshift rack
Can't wait. It has been a long time since I canned. Thanks for video

Laila Garrett I never thought of using the small jars and vacuum sealing them. Great tip. Thanks for the comment.
Well this traditionalist is totally on board let's get to canning yay thank you Sarah
Sarah, you are a hoot! We all melt things in the dishwasher, lol! You are such a good teacher! Greetings from Iowa!
Thank you for this series, I am just starting and I can't wait to see whats next .

Nice job Sarah, thank you. God Bless

The wide mouth jars are easier for like pickling too..😊 or for big chunk foods like potatoes.
Another great video, Sarah! Think my wife needs a couple pots and books and she’ll be good to go. I know she has done some canning with friends and has the accessories. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Thanks again, and God bless!

Very good info thank you
Thanks Sarah.

Another great informational video..Thank you

I think to save space I'll just buy the larger pressure canner and use it as a water bath canner too. Do u need extra racks for that?
put a magnet on the tip of a wooden spoon. no more melting

WOW !! Very Informative .. I Plan on watching the Whole series !
Hi Sara! I like to can things, but I'm always afraid bacteria. Is there a way to test the food before you eat it when you open something?
I began to look at another home canner. Tonight she spoke about canning lids from china. Do you buy canning lids that were made in china? She says they are not reliable. That they can pop open after the jars have been put away. I'd like to hear your opinion on this, and have you ever had a properly canned jar's lid pop open after a jar has been put up for storage.
I have been researching sugar free jelly using juice from fresh fruits. Have you done this and do you have a video that shows how?
I wish they made the lifters with better materian . I have had to buy another one because the rubber cracks.
Do u have to use both Water bath and pressure canner or can u do it all in a water bath?
How do I find the series list of videos that you mention in the video?
Do they still make two quart jars? It's probably been thirty years since I've canned, and that was water-bath canning tomato juice. I know they had two quart jars then because that is what my mother-in-law and I were using.
+Julie Baker They do make 2-quart jars, but the canning companies do not recommend canning with them.
They do make them and you can buy them at WalMart... Great for canning stuff like juice. Great for tomato juice. :)
Yes they do but I think you can only use them for fruit juice.
All my lids and ring r gold color
I am at 82' above sea level how long do I boil my water?
Subbed ya Joanne's Army
what brand is the smaller presto?
How many jars do you have?
Jennifer Rescott is like to know this too.
no mason jars in the u.s?
Can u get these books at walmart
Great video! Only you should not boil your lids. Hot water but not boiling
+Diana Lucas at Justus Acres Oh darn, I knew that! I guess I misspoke. Well, I'll clarify in the actually canning videos. Thank for catching that, Diana.
Diana Lucas at Justus Acres why not boil lids? I've done that so wondering why I shouldn't?
Udder Charms Farm Overheating lids by boiling can result in a seal failure per the Ball book
Say how much the jars are!
