I just want to say. That if Dragonball fans can forgive a black hearted, cruel, sadistic, blood thirsty murderer (AKA Vegeta), then forgiving Endeavor should be a cake walk by comparison.

Most Dragon Ball fans never say Vegeta is a good guy and no one calls him a hero. He is just and awesome fighter that happens to save the day sometimes. Even the show doesn't paint him as a hero. MHA is s story focused on heroes and what makes a person a great hero. Which is why Endeavor suffers in the eyes of the fans. The show wants to make his "work" feats heroic while also giving him and his family a "complicated past" it's not complicated, its abuse. And unless he is willing to get on his knees and beg for forgiveness. Then he can start trying to change. It just has not been addressed well because the mangaka wants him to be a sympathetic and awesome character we can root for.

L Jeans It is never outright stated that Vegeta is a hero or something. But it is a point that he was resurrected in the Buu arc when a wish which explicitly only revived the good people killed by Majin Boo and excluded the evil ones. So even if nobody calls him a hero, the fact of the matter is that the story itself does "upgrades" Vegeta to being a good guy.

    • @ljeans531
      @ljeans531 4 года назад

@@JuanRodriguez-rf7qy Ummmmm. How is he not out right stated as a hero. He is introduced as number 2 hero and now holds the title as #1 Hero, so please explain how he isnt referred to by the writer and the in-universe society as a hero.
Ps. No one in DBZ society is praising Vegeta accomplishments. The most the Z warriors acknowledge him is through his sacrifice and they still give him crap. Bulma knows her husband was a horrible person and MHA is proving to be a more intimate show anyway.

    • @ljeans531
      @ljeans531 4 года назад

@@JuanRodriguez-rf7qy Also you forget that Vegeta wasnt revived by that wish. He was revived by Baba the Witch.
Ps the people wished back was not good or bad, it was good or Evil.
And even if Vegeta is not an inherently good person he is not EVIL. I wouldn't even call Endeavor evil.

I like that the manga hasn’t had the Todoroki family suddenly forgive Engi as soon as is journey to redemption started. Earning forgiveness is hard, and sometimes impossible. But that doesn’t stop a character like Endeavour, defined by his passion, ambition, and work-ethic, from trying. Most importantly, Endeavour doesn’t act entitled to forgiveness. He knows there’s no way to earn forgiveness for what he’s done, but he tries anyways.

    What an incredible video!
For Endeavor, it’s like you said, most of the celeb redemptions were because they were caught and that’s not the case with him. Only his family, Deku, and Bakugou know about how hard he pushed Shouto but Enji doesn’t know that. He’s doing his redemption because he hit that point himself. And he’s not pushing for forgiveness either or getting mad because he’s not getting it.
Which is what makes me so angry about the fandom, either they’re just anime viewers only and don’t know the story (thus far) or do but don’t care to get it.
Without getting TOO into it, my dad has done a lot of damage to me and my brothers and we told him as such but he never even owned up to his wrongs, instead saying “well I think I’m in the right so whatever”, and I haven’t spoken to him in 10 years. If he had even acknowledged and tried, it would have made a huge difference. And if not for us, why not for himself? I couldn’t be at ease knowing my children all told me I did such horrible things no matter if I thought at the time I was in the right.
It’s easy for people on social media with all these movements to not realize no one is without sin. We’re humans, we fuck up *all the time*. Good people make bad decisions (especially when alcohol and hard drugs are involved ugh) and while I never knew about that critic, that’s a really powerful story and hope he can move past this.
So there’s a novel comment, sorry lol. Enji is honestly one of my top 3 favorite characters and I LOATHED him when I only watched the anime. When the HighEnd fight went on, I was right there cheering with his kids and he quickly moved up my list.
“Can he be redeemed?” is a loaded question. Can he forgive himself? Can Rei or his kids? If not forgive him for what he had done but take him how he is changing and as the new #1?
And if Dabi=Touya will that be the ultimate forgiveness?
Again! Lol sorry this went into a huge thing! I’m a fan of good character development and while it’s only scratched the surface of Todoroki Enji’s, I have high hopes it’s going to be amazing.

Basically, whether or not Endeavor can be redeemed or deserves redemption is moot. Everyone deserves a chance to try.
Edit: Actually, that throws a lot of new context into his hero name: Endeavor. As in "To Try".

This comment deserves all the likes it can get. Though I have to disagree with you on the whole Dabi = Touya theory. In my opinion, it doesn't make sense. Reason being that in the manga:
      SPOILER ALERT!!!
When Endeavour first encountered Dabi, he made no visible reaction. If Dabi was Endeavour's son, you would think that he would have said something to give us a hint that the theory holds some weight, if any at all. Horikoshi could've made Endeavour say something along the lines of, "Hey, this kid's Quirk is very similar to Touya's. Why is that?"
Sorry if I spoiled anything for you, just wanted to give my own two cents. I'm not saying Dabi couldn't have any blood ties with Endeavour, but if you are holding out for that theory; then more power to you. You do you

No one is entitled to forgiveness.
No matter how much work they put in to fix their wrongs, nor the results of that work. And if being forgiven is their primary motivation, rather than actually fixing their mistakes, their likely going to give up once they realize forgiveness isn't so easy.
That's why I love what's being done with Endeavour. He doesn't act entitled to forgiveness. His whole effort to make things right, both with his family and in the public eye, is defined by his phrase "Just watch me."
All he asks is both the public and family watch his actions going forward and decide for themselves whether they think he's worthy of forgiveness and being the number one hero, respectively.

Edgy Boi He also slaughtered many innocent namekians, neglected his kid, almost caused the earth to be destroyed by Cell, and then throws away the progress he made of becoming good by taking power from Babadi all because Goku shows back up. So yeah you're right he is a different case, cause he's way worse of a person than Endeavor! Now Endeavor is certainly not a good person but he is nowhere near as bad as a person Vegeta was and never will be. So again if people can eventually forgive someone as bad as Vegeta, eventually Endeavor can be forgiven.

“No one deserves grace, and that’s what makes it special”
The main problem with the PR response to most people get “Me Tooed” is that it is just a PR response. Barely anyone actually goes about doing anything to try to right their wrongs, despite it being impossible to do so. Showing that you’re sorry has to involve some level of pain, or hurt, or loss. Because anyone can say “I’m sorry” if it doesn’t cost them anything.

For me, Endeavor is the Darth Vader of MHA, except he’s actually a hero and not the villain. If the world accepted Vader’s redemption, then why the world can’t accept Endeavor’s redemption?
The scene when he talk with Todoroki in season 4 about been a hero he can be proud of is something beautiful for me. Because in other words he said: I’m sorry son... I’m so sorry for what I did to you and our family, I’m sorry for not been there for you and not been the father you deserved. I promise I will change, I promise I will be a better hero and a better father for you.
I don’t know what you think, but in my opinion Endeavor deserves a second chance, now that he is the hero number one, he want to make things different, not only for the society, but his entire family.

I get the need for endever redemption arc, my dad has had a sketchy Relashinships in his past, I've heard stories that I hope aren't true but once is maybe...twice is a pattern. But that man he was was not the one I've ever met the dad I know is a kind man and a great father, so I see that in Endever. Change is possible.

Excellent video essay. The pro-hero arc is hands down some of the best writing Kohei Horikoshi has done in the series. It never crossed me that he would show a different perspective for Endeavor, but given what he did with Bakugou; it seems silly to not think this. But why I love Endeavor as a character is that ultimately his life was a zero-sum game. He desperately wanted to beat All Might and be number one, but never could. And rather than pushing himself or at least be content with his standing; Endeavor gave up. He chose the easy/ terrible route with his family and Todoroki. Let me make it clear; I by no means endorse what he did. Endeavor is a class A scumbag for what he did. But what I love about this is that Endeavor himself now realizes this. His battle with High End was less about if he could beat the Nomu, but more of who he is as the number one hero and if he can do it.
And one of the central messages of MHA is the idea of pushing past your limits. Specifically, those who end up on top are those who can do this. But what I also love about the Pro-hero arc is Fuyumi, Natsuo and Todoroki's responses. With an issue as charged as abuse, having three perspectives represented by his children showcased a lot of care on behalf of Horikoshi. Namely, in that the road Endeavor sets himself on will not be easy. If he even does gain forgiveness from those affected. And that is why I love Endeavor.
He's a character that very much embodies the more real, grounded elements of MHA. And it is fitting given how the series tone has gradually shifted from that idyllic, bright view of heroes to a darker, more gray look at the world.

Chris Hardwick is also a bad example as he was falsely acussed, a team if private investigators found no evidence to back up the acusations. The redemption arc should be him forgiving the stuck-up pruds who atacked him.
