Cancelled GBA Quake Port FOUND! | Forest of Illusion

- The year is 2002, and Randy Linden is hard at work porting Quake to a little handheld system called the Game Boy Advance. If that name rings a bell, Linden is a veteran game developer best known for the creation of the BLEEM emulator as well as the groundbreaking SNES port of Doom-the latter of which was considered impossible by id Software themselves. Given his prior experience, a GBA port of Quake seemed like a logical step in his career. This unreleased prototype we present to you today was recently discovered on a 256M Flash Card in Linden’s storage, and is certainly a far cry from anything else developed for the handheld.

Then an MVG video: The impossible port…
I was gonna comment exactly that
sO THERE U HAVE IT GUYS
This has Punching Weight written all over it.
@@AmyNumberSeven If there’s a dumb accessory involved then yeah
the guy from MVG worked on the last port of Quake for modern consoles. I think he's eventually gonna address this
Holy crap. I've always hoped that Barry one day writes a book because everything on the surface that we know about him seems like he's been on one crazy adventure through out the years; from lawsuits that changed how the face of commerical emulation to bonkers coding.
I bet there is so many stories to tell.
Who's Barry?
@@mattsephton Oh my god, I'm such an idiot and clearly a massive Kubric fan who can't get his films out of his mind.
Apologies Randy
@@novelezra props to Barry for standing in for a while
@@novelezra No problem -- I appreciate the kind words and thoughts -- Kubric is awesome, too!
@@randallinden WRITE A BOOK OR DO SOME KIND OF DOCUMENTARY KICKSTARTER PLEASE!
Wait... 1:40 - Aardappel? Wouter van Oortmerssen, the creator of the Cube & Sauerbraten game engines? That was his nickname back in the day...
Ha nice catch
Yes, Aardappel did the maps in the prototype.
@@randallinden thanks for the official confirmation 👍 great work!
Absolutely insane!
Such a cool relic, glad it's been discovered.
Massive thanks to Forest of Illusion for releasing the prototype -- without them no one would have known it existed!
This level of technological achievement is simply beautiful.
Imagine seeing this in 2001, 5 years after it's original release...
This takes the cake for the best Nintendo impossible port
Thanks for the kind words and compliments -- I appreciate it!
Check out tomb raider on GBA
@@randallinden the music is kickass; and i have to know, who composed it?
I'm shocked this exists and maybe it could've been possible if finished but I'm sure the 3D enemies would have to be turned into sprites.
GBA doesn't handle 3D well at all but it can do it.
Did you see the port of open Lara on gba?
@@richterdelgan123 I have its very impressive
@@Yushe_ I want to live in that alternative time line when devs discover the gba 3d hidden potential sooner.
But with the actual gba dev community, maybe is not too late.
nope, an older version of the port that ran e1m1 was 1 to 1 to the dos version in every way but resolution and framerate.
They would most likely make big optimisations.
Would be amazing if those companies who bought unfinished retro games pays for a complete game and release a physical copy
Fascinating. It's sort of like a hybrid of Quake and Doom, but something else entirely. I wonder what that value next to the Armor is supposed to be?
Looks like the player's coordinate on the map to me
It appears to be tied to framerate. Larger numbers seem to correspond to higher performance.
fps*10 maybe
Aardappel!? The Cube & Sauerbraten guy? I see someone else noticed too. But seeing that name & Randy Linden in the same place is straight out of left field.
Cool, perspective correct mapping. I wonder if the demo has an option to always use affine mapping for better performance.
Is the music actually playing in the game? I know it's Aryx by the way.
@@forestillusion when I download it. The game looks a bit like quake but I have new maps and spider enemies . Why
Oh nvmd. Got it
@@AndroidFerret oh hey man such a coincidence seeing you here, I'm subscribed to you
@@AndroidFerret you should make a video about this
I see you everywhere, Nikku!!!
What kind of witchcraft did they have to pull off to even get a working prototype of this? It's mind boggling something like this is possible.
Hand coded in assembly language apparently. This guy also made the Doom port for SNES
This looks more like Chasm than Quake now and I love it
Guaranteed Derek & LGR will be covering this.
That music feels so 2000s... I love it
Great port for having a Karsten Koch track in it alone :D
The music REEKS of demoscene
I await for someone to Recreate this for the Quake Remaster like they did with Quake 64.
I wish they release this port... I would have loved it...
This song has awakened a long lost memory hahahaha
Holy shit, this is amazing!! Thank you so much for finding and releasing this!! 👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻💪🏻
They never found anything nor released anything.
This game is a personal project from a very talented individual who just finished the project this year and made it public himself.
This video is complete clickbait and false information!
The prototype was found in a storage locker that I recently cleaned out. Forest of Illusion released the prototype.
@@randallinden nice try.
This account was opened only one day ago.
I highly doubt that Randy would open a YT account purely to reply to this comment one one random channel...
(consider yourself reported)
@@randallinden oh, I know that. I was just giving a quick congratulation. My apologies for the inaccuracy.
Looks pretty good. I wonder what other sorts of optimizations would have been possible to get it to run better, if at all possible. The base engine and architecture looks impressive by GBA standards, but you can see the framerate absolutely tanking even without any on-screen combat happening, so I'd imagine it being totally unplayable once you start implementing the standard Quake enemies.
I remember seeing quake on gba somewhere, it was right here on RUclips, I don't know how or when, I must be going crazy.
Now that’s an impressive port!
Randy Linden is such a living legend
nah fuck his stupid ass
he wanted emulators to go commercial
Thank you for the kudos -- I appreciate it!
@@randallinden Porting the quake'esqe engine to an arm7 gba processor is like porting DooM 3 with bumpmapping to the Sega Dreamcast! Outstanding work. Similar to your Doom on the SNES DSP-2 and Bleem!
P.S. I'm currently waiting for KK Altair's port of DREAD (Amiga 500 FPS) on the Sega Genesis. I hope someday we will see this Doom clone on mc68000@8mhz and 64kb ram. Altair KK promised to try make a port for Genesis, it gonna be cool!
@@RAVE_GHETTO_BLASTER Thanks for the kind words and kudos -- I appreciate it!
This is really impressive
That sounds like the 5GHz Pentium 4 liquid nitrogen overclocking music haha
The music in it sounds really familiar
Yep, I've definitely heard it before and I can't place it... originally I thought it was from some Cracktro but I'm not sure...
It's an old mod file - ruclips.net/video/vRZ_iuBFk-I/видео.html
@@TheRasteri Yep, that's it and in the comments section of that video I realized where I heard it. I heard it from the Pentium 4 5GHz overclock video: ruclips.net/video/z0jQZxH7NgM/видео.html
@@optimaximal I heard it from this video: ruclips.net/video/z0jQZxH7NgM/видео.html
Recognized it immediately. I used to have a CD-ROM compilation of many classic MODs and this was a favorite one.
This is amazing. So fun to finally see it in proper action. Truly impressive. Sad it was cancelled
This is impressive and really cool looking. They totally could have done something with this, if not Quake!
I mean, maybe, but who would want to play it? The performance looks absolutely miserable, and other shooters on the GBA were just not fun to play at all unless they were very basic. It's cool as a tech demo, though.
@@GrammerPancreas Well, I'm looking more at the engine side of it. The performance looks quite acceptable, as long as you conform the game itself to suit such limited controls and performance. So I don't think a conventional shooter would work as-is either.
It bares repeating that the GBA Is not a 3D system
People who bought this were playing platformers and RPG's
Yes there have been 3D games on It to varying degrees but It's still pushing the limits of the system In creative ways
This is honestly impressive for a GBA game, but the music’s a bit of an odd choice.
For some reason they changed the weapons and enemies, even the position.
Nice video 😉
That's GORGEOUS ! 💪😎
I love good 3D GBA graphics 😍
Same I was soooo happy when Doom 2 came out. I couldnt afford a PC and only could play doom on GBA and N64
Love the trance music
it's karsten koch - aryx
@@Slawek361 legend
NOOOIIIIICHE! ^
This music slaps.
A direct link to the rom would be a good idea, eh?
Anyway, the rom crashes on the "My Boy" emulator for Android. I hope a better version of the rom is released...
I've tried it on mGBA and NanoBoyAdvance and they both work fine. I would guess that the "My Boy" emulator has a bug that needs to be fixed for the demo to work.
Love the music
music *and* sound effects in a 3d gba title? holy bananers
There was an E1M1 demo as well but i guess this isn't available for anyone.
Tnx 4 video ! What's the track is playing ? )
i wonder what's the music used in the demo
Song: Karsten Koch - Aryx
With options to fine tune the perfomance and graphics it would be perfect
I bought this game for Symbian under the name Cyboid. It never gained any popularity, and afaik wasn't even cracked
I can vibe with this.
As always with these things, does not work on a Revo k101plus.
The source video of this s availiable as open source????
I haven't released the source code -- sadly, the GBA version doesn't build because the code has changed too much over the past twenty years.
Where do I find a copy of that music?
I wonder if Aard knows his maps are in this :0
Of course he does -- he gave me permission to use the maps.
Amazing
Nice eurobeats!
I think people forget how ahead of its time the gba was.
It wasn't,this is absolutely crazy though
is the Game complete?
Aryx ❤️
Why the weapons are so different? They are placeholders?
Yes. When Linden still worked on it, he still had no permission for using the original QUAKE resources from id, and at one point, he actually planned on asking for their permission.
It looks cool but would I actally want to play it? Not really.
dope port but uh
whats this song
Its aryx.s3m / Intel Pentium 4 5GHz overclock music
Spicy
Do we get a rom!?
Didn't work for me - crashed on original gba🤔
It’s more a quake clone, but definitely not a quake port.
Not a Single texture, enemy or weapon is in quake.
@@forestillusion
Will it be released once he founds it?
Plenty of these are Quake textures, though
What music is playing?
A tracker tune called Aryx
holy SHIT this prototype is raw. i have nothing but respect for linden but shit this doesn't look very playable. he tried his absolute hardest at least
can you bunnyhop in it?
Armor it's a fps?
Old FPS games had armour or shielding besides health pickups that or just id software shooters did at least.
Fucking sorcery!!!
wtf pentium 4 overclock music
Intel Pentium 5GHz overclock music
I wonder if a 32x port of quake would be possible... 🤔
It would be possible to put something resembling quake on a 32X with HEAVY edits but calling it a port would probably be a bit much
Same with a Jaguar version before anyone asks 😂
no rez means no watch
No to the music. . . Just no.
