- Just before the year comes to an end, we managed to secure and preserve a prototype build of Super Mario World! Dated the 25th of October, 1990 - a whole ten months before the game would hit store shelves within North America, many differences to the final product can be noted.

With every video game prototype that is found, my hope for the cartridge of Earthbound 64 being found increases day by day.
Oh yeah!
I hope for Twelve Tales Conker 64 to be found some day.
@@Curlyheart Tim Stamper tweeted out his working copy just to flex on the Internet. He's probably live streaming Earthbound 64 on a private stream with the original founders of Activision and guys like that being the only ones invited.
@@zerobyte802 ain't that a kick in the head...
born too late to explore earth
born too early to explore the galaxy
born just in time to see the localization prototype for Super Mario World get preserved
Never born too late to explore A galaxy far far, away!
What a fantastic find!!! I loved how The Gaming Historian narrated this too!! Cannot wait to see what more prototype builds and assets will get found in the future! :)
Was wondering why this voice seemed familiar...
Remember about Prototype of Trog in playmation on arcade (As for pre-released version)
Thought I recognized the voice
@@sashakvasha1529 ooooooh, I 'member..
Oh, 4:46 The buttons were changed back to Red, Blue, Green and Yellow for PAL regions. Only the US and Canada had the purple design :)
Hello, YOU!
OH MY GURU
So many people forget that only North America received that particular design. Only the NES had a total change in all regions outside of Japan, and since North America had another alternate design for the SNES, they probably assume that PAL regions had it as well, when in reality PAL Super Nintendoes look like the Japanese one, just with a different frame rate and region.
I'm glad someone else pointed this out. It always annoys me when Americans just assume Genesis was the "international" name for the Sega, and the purple SNES was the "international" version, when only the Americas used them. Most of the planet isn't America. It really rubs me the wrong way.
Also imagine having to wait less than a year for the SNES to come out after Japan instead of 2-4 years depending on country.
Wait, what're you doing here? How does this channel with only 5k subs have such illustrious names attached to it?
a stray pixel on the sign of yoshi's house? actually unplayable.
(pretty cool find!)
It’s like a secret Gaming Historian episode. Good job to all involved! ^^
3:12 I think that "stray pixel" is supposed to a nail holding up the sign.
That explains why the final still seems to have a stray pixel.
@@renakunisaki where is that pixel?
There's a minor graphical bug that can be seen on the bottom left of the screen @3:27 when you rescue princess Toadstool. Hopefully Nintendo can patch that out before release.
That’s actually in the final as well.
@@ElijahRulz whoosh
@@Gold_Yoshiwe get it you use reddit
@@tezcanaslan2877 he didn't even put the r/ though?
@@kirbo4252 "woooosh" is a Reddit term whether you use the r/ or not
This is actually amazing, THANK YOH ALL FOR HELPING FINDING THIS! Even though it's just an localization prototype it's really cool to get an prototype.
The European button-colours were red, yellow, blue and green. At least my Super Nintendo purchased in Norway had those colour buttons on its controls.
Stray pixel on the Yoshi sign is likely supposed to be a nail holding the sign up.
0:14 has a clip of another prototype. The giveaway is the title screen using the Super Mario Bros 4 logo, but this time without the 4. Nice!
Awesome!
And it has a debug mode!
This is an awesome early Christmas gift
Great find. Will play it asap. Merry Christmas to all of you guys. Thanks for the video.
Almost completely overlooked this video because I thought the red border on the bottom was my watch time and it was one I already watched lmao
super fucking mario!
I bet the stray pixel on Yoshi’s sign was actually meant to be a nail
This is an early Christmas miracle for Mario fans.
Excellent video. Thanks for making it!
Personally, I would have changed it to, “Also, your progress will be saved.”
Awesome. Thanks for making this video and all the work you guys do!
Love this video style, I hope you guys do more like this! Having The Gaming Historian narrate is 👌
Woah what!?
Man, what a find indeed! It's always great to see more and more pieces of video game history get preserved, and this is no exception. Great work to everyone involved in securing and preserving this prototype!
4:50 *for North American SNES controllers
great job though!
I can't believe it finally happened. Here's hoping that more Mario prototypes get discovered in the upcoming year 😇😇
finally we got a prototype of super mario world
this is huge
The Gaming Historian narrating fits SO well, cause the history is his style, and talking about prototypes just makes so much sense.
Great video, excellent storytelling!
Awesome find and thanks for sharing this with us. :)
You can beat some of those unused TEST levels with glitches to get beyond 96 exits on the Japanese version of the game. On the US version, you can still do it, but the title screen displays "96🌟" for all exit counts above 96. I wonder if that was implemented yet at the time of this prototype?
What I'm wondering is 1) can you access these by hacking the final version to let you walk around freely, and 2) can you also walk to the unused switch palace next to Bowser's Castle?
Actually, didn't the GBA version have a bug that let you access the test level through the Special World warp? I wonder if that can be used on these other warps?
That voice is recognizable everywhere, thanks for the video!
People will have fun speedrunning this prototype
Fantastic. I love finds like this!
Lovely find!
Always cool seeing stuff like this come to light. The font used in the prototype's text was re-used in the final game for the message that appears after you defeat Bowser!
Excellent music choices!
Truly a fantastic video! I don't even want to know how long it took to look for all this information
Great video and awesome content!
Found this in circulation.
Now i know what they were using in the commercials that aired when i was a kid.
Redhotsonic be like: 'But Dose it work, on real hardware?'
what a pleasant surprise to randomly click on this and hear the voice of Norm Caruso!
Merry Christmas I guess, wasn't expecting this today
Yo, this is cool! I love it when stuff like this surfaces!
Love the video. I was upset you forgot to add the detail that Yoshi could eat Dolphins in the Japanese version but that feature was removed in the US release.
The dolphins were removed because you're supposed to use them as moving platforms. It is possible (in the Japanese version) to have Yoshi eat too many, making it impossible to continue, so they removed that feature.
That change isn't really relevant to this prototype? I guess they could have tested whether it was changed yet.
Wow a perfect Christmas gift, a beta rom of SMW ❤ :D
If only we can found a more early beta rom with the gigaleak content but im still really happy that this rom is found, im always curious about the SMW beta, this game is my all time favorite videogame :) .
Woah I didnt know about the L+R thing to return back to a cleared castle. Thanks for the info!
Boo Jackson should've been kept
still hoping that someday someone will release the story copy build that i seen back in the day at then Kmart for the holidays, i still remember that for some reason someone had game overed on the game and it was totally different then the normal retail version, you could see the game map and it was different too, real hard to explain but it was kinda like mario 3 but it wasnt... someday im sure
Cool video! I found this out because of StutteringCraigs reaction video.
What a great early Christmas present!
Crazy find!!
I'm excited to see this new discovery prototype
A perfect time for Christmas.
Hmm pretty cool.
I know we’ll never get the story behind the rom … likely an unreturned reviewer’s prototype.
❤❤❤ the detail and comparison to gigaleak data
8:26 - ...so what does accessing the seventh unlockable Star Road (the post-Funky one in the Special Area) do? Bit odd that you'd try the first six to see what happens but not the seventh, especially given what that last Star Road normally does.
the post funky starwarp is just another test level.

this makes me wonder if nintendo was originally going to release the super nintendo & it’s launch games globally on the same day but they delayed it until 1991.
The only thing is that SMB 3 would have to have launched in 1989 instead of 1990 for the US to get that in time for a Super NES/SMW launch in 1990. That's a hell of a lot of Mario games quickly- SMB 2 in 1988, SMB 3 in 1989, SMB 4 (SMW) in 1990. The way they did it was fine, SMB 2 in 1988, SMB 3 in 1990, SMW in 1991.
Woah, amazing.
Thank you!
i love you forest of illusion
This is history for gaming
finally we even have a prototype of this
This reminds me of that Sonic 1 prototype
Very good!
Hell yeah!
Does anyone happen to know where the image of Mario and company cleaning the PCB board at the end comes from?
I’d like to see the flying platform stage from World 5 (Forest of Illusion). “Forest Secret Area.” I recall an in-depth preview of the game from the early ‘90s showed that stage with the wrong background and I never forgot about it. I recall it was an unofficial guide book for several NES games that also included a Super Mario World preview. Because it was a guide and not a magazine it stayed on the shelf at my local K-Mart for years after the game was released.
Well, I guess this explains why the manual says you can’t re-enter castle stages when you clearly can using L + R. That’s bugged me since 1993! Now I see the manual was just localized first. ;)
very small correction, very very small:
The international controllers were not changed to purple and lavender - that was just the NTSC ones. The international PAL consoles had the colourful buttons too.
5:21 this does make sense though
And to think I was just watching the Gaming Historian video on SMW yesterday. I did a bit of a double take on who's video this was when I clicked on it. lol
Seeing before great N triggers their Intellectual property jealousy
This is incredible, now imagine finding Mario 128
Epic 👍
Preservation! Something I wish we all favored.
Everyone: *dies of excitement*
*GASP* Do I hear Norman The Gaming Historian?
Prototype ROM Mario really said /gamemode creative
I thought I was watching Norm the Gaming Historian's channel at first!!
Wow!
7:35 -- yeah I've known about that for yeeeeeears
I was searching for Hit Entertainment prototypes and somehow I found this
The purple buttons were used exclusively in NTSC regions
Actually, I think the stray pixel on the Yoshi sign might be a nail?
5:10 Having 'also' at the end of the sentence like that isn't incorrect grammar. People can and do write/talk like that, and it is correct. It's just just more old-fashioned.
I always remembered in the final US build if you managed to get to the 1st star world via the Boo Boss battle and cleared the 1st star world stage staying to the far left and spinning with a mushroom or more to get to the key and opening the door then making small blue Yoshi eat the star and clearing that stage with the key at the end then keeping the Blue Yoshi and going back to the main game and not revisiting the star world until you cleared the Valley of Bowser the game would remove the key in the box in the Latiku cloud floating part making the whole 96 stages impossible to clear... I wonder if the prototype left this in as it seems to have altered this stage near the end of the game?
It's a weird treat to hear your voice here; but on such a low-sub count channel
I know this voice! Amazing!!!
What is the difference between the US/JP and Prototype sprite of Princess Peach?
Dang after all those powerful codes I thought you were going to say "and then press L R and Start to instantly save Princess Peach and acquire infinite lives and coins and fill every colored block and engage post-Star-World graphics like the construction worker koopas " and stuff. But yea that's a cool cart though, neat find
i hope the beta with the beta yoshi sprite that looks more like a dino gets leaked someday. also one with the smb3 racoon tail instead of cape...
8:59 Where can I see the full cutscene?
How did I not know about this? :O
Well it did only happen a day or two ago.
Nintendo (of America) is wrong for not adding the Super Mario Bros. 4 subtitle to the official title and promotion! Matter of fact, if they just released the Super Famicom, christened it 2:52 the SNES (like Europe) and not change the design or color of the cartridges and controllers, they could have released the system by May or June around the same time as Sonic the Hedgehog’s release but instead, ended up in a dog fight with Sega for the 6 years.
Where can we get the build? Also hope Christmas was good! It's the 26th now
Yo Gaming Historian.
03:17 the mailbox is a prototype for the Tesla car logo
Hopefully we can find the prototype with the mushroom island and that looked more like SMB3.
