  • Los Angeles Fire Department engines, trucks and other units responding with siren and lights to a wildfire in Elysian Park, Los Angeles, CA in 2017.
On July the 6th, 2017, at 12:29 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a vegetation fire in Elysian Park and initially reported they'd be able to handle one half acre of heavy brush with two companies, Park Rangers and a helicopter that would be used for both reconnaissance and command.
As a precaution at 12:50 the incident was upgraded to a full Brush Fire assignment which brought additional companies seen responding in this video. Shortly after a wildland evacuation was ordered of the park at 13:10 - this didn't include structures how-ever LAPD ground and air units were requested to assist with evacuating hikers and other park visitors.
By 13:59 knock down was declared after 90 minutes with 107 Firefighters. The final acreage was declared at 1.25 acres of vegetation with no structures threatened.
During this incident another vegetation fire broke out in the park at Angels Point Rd near Academy Rd but forward progress was halted by the first on scene engine company. Firefighters then worked with Park Rangers to fully extinguish the fire.

Not a criticism, but an observation. Structure firefighters are used to having an unlimited water supply so they drown everything and don't build line or get hand tools out to put out a fire. Wildland firefighters would have one Type III engine and maybe a Type VII patrol on that fire a total of about 575 gallons of water with no hydrants for a very long distance. They would have contained that fire with less than that and not had water running down the street. It likely would have taken longer, but they would mix and stir a lot after building a line all the way around that fire. They would use no more water than exactly what was needed.
I'm glad to see Engine 9 on this fire, those guys see such little action that they need to get out an about once in awhile!

1990-95, most of the trucks looked about a decade old at least but I’m not very good with certain models.

Not an ambulance. That's crew 3, a volunteer hand crew. Probably have hand me downs.

Hey guys and gals, does anyone know from a Firefighter's standpoint. How those Firefighters got killed in a wildfire, several years ago? I don't mean like asphyxiation, or burned to death. I'm wondering if the fire did something, that they didn't expect? Did they pick a bad spot, when they started to fight the fire? Etc..., etc.....

107 firefighters for a 1.25 acre fire...... Boy...there's a great utilization of resources

It’s not just was you have burning on arrival, but the potential for spread and/or exposures. Re-watch the video and observe the wind blowing the trees. You may not see them, but there are many buildings in that area. I grew up very close to that location.

I find it odd but normally ladder trucks are not needed for wildfires.

just to get more fire fighters on scene and have more hoses etc

@@TheReduxGB Usually the crew from the ladder truck will leave the truck in staging and man the 200 Engine.

So in the Los Angeles Fire Department ladder trucks typically run with an engine 'pump'. Together they're known as a Light Force and bring both Ladder Truck and Engine capabilities to a scene.
A typical Brush Fire Assignment for the LAFD will always consist of Light Forces for structure protection, manpower and equipment.
