  • Fire Trucks from several agencies responding to the biggest wildfire to strike Santa Cruz County in decades. The fire has burned over 78,000 acres, destroyed at least 163 structures, and killed at least one person just days after ignition. The fire was caused by a number of lightning strikes, and is named the CZU Lightning Complex Fire.
A full length video with coverage of the entire fire will be public in the coming days.

I live in this war zone. The fire came within 1500 feet of my home. The tireless efforts of these brave heroes, especially our local volunteer departments, prevented our whole valley from being engulfed in flames. From the firefighters I talked to, they said they had never seen anything like this, they were doing all they could just to save structures while the fire swept on by. Sadly over 900 homes lost and counting, we are a close knit community so this was a very special fire fight for the valley departments, they were doing all they could to save the memories of friends and family. They came with all they had, the state fell short in that the resources were spread so thin. Sadly much of the beautiful wooded hillsides are chard and so many structures lay in ash. Kudos to all that participated, wish I could have been along side to help fight this beast. Right now off in the distance the helicopters continue to fly, the fight goes on.

That is an insane number of trucks arriving in one place. I've been both an urban and rural volunteer fire fighter in Australia for 8 years. I responded to one of the Black Saturday fires (In the state of Victoria) we had. Even we didn't see that many trucks arrive all at once. Incredible.

Reminds me of when a local city near me had there town square catch fire. They dispatched 30 fire departments some over 30 miles away and from the neighboring state. All you heard was sirens roaring from every direction as lines of fire engines came roaring into the city from both the west south and east sides

We had a bad wildfire season in wnc back in 2016 we don’t even have a fire season but we had multiple t seemed like every week a new one started we had alot of guys come in from out west and can’t thank them enough not saying we couldn’t have put them out ourselves but we greatly appreciated their assistance and expertise but that year hearing sirens was always worrying. We had 2 fires within about 15 miles of our neighborhood on each side which wasn’t concerning at the time but I live on an embankment and I was woken up by a ton of sirens and my heart sank and when I went outside there was 20 fire trucks parked right out front we had a fire start less than a mile from my house luckily they put it out not long after it had started
