- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Dr. Nicholas Kardaras is the Executive Director of the world-renowned rehabilitation facility the Dunes in East Hampton, NY. Having lived a colorful life (he’s an AAU National Karate champion, a recovering NYC nightclub owner and a coma survivor), he’s also an internationally recognized addictions expert and lifelong seeker who has explored many of the world’s wisdom traditions.
In his talk, Nick shares his personal story of coming back from the dead - literally - and discusses the connection between addiction and lack of purpose. Searching for meaning in today’s virtual and disconnected world, Nick calls for low-tech solutions to a high-tech problem

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Wow only 138 comments. I pray it is because it has people thinking. This video should be required for anyone with children. Thank you for posting.
Hello from beautiful Montana, thanks so much for caring and sharing. I have worked with Hospice gathering end of life stories for their clients. I have gained much love for those who are transitioning. Death is not the worst thing. The veil is thin and we are never alone when death is near. Fondly, Judy Helm Wright--Author/Historian/WiseWoman
MISLEADING TITLE - FYI for those searching for classic NDE: this video is NOT the classic NDE experience. This talk is about addiction and technology and how it affects children.
Thank you
thanks, im not going to waste my precious time i want real nde
You are allowed to stop watching something if it fails to interest you. Technically you may be correct but the presentation was riveting just the same.
Thanks.
Still people need to know.
Thank you for caring about this problem and bring to light..., scary!!!
Such a caring and accomplished man whose been through so much and inspired us to help others and value our lives
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing your sensibly & grounded energy.
Thank you Dr.Kardaras.
And here we are 6 years later, and as an elementary school teacher, I am pushed and pushed by administrators to use more and more technology in the classroom.
I have flatlined (different cause) and also proceeded through psych studies afterwards; particularly engaged by Dr. NK's emotional vulnerability near the start of his talk. He rightly describes tech for young kids as OB-GYN would tell pregnant or nursing mothers to avoid drugs to prevent neurological damage. Bravo and thank you to TedX and Dr. NK for this. 💖 Stellar.
Thank you, Dr. Nick Kardaras for putting so eloquently into words what many of us feel. Insightful and heartfelt!

Ty Dr. For trying to save our children.
Man search for meaning. Great great talk, great book Victor Frankl. People do search for purpose. But life is magical wonders and gives you battering to be reborn and live in obsession to achieve beautiful dreams. Thank you, bless you. All your dreams come true.
Thank you so much for this information. The next generation of addiction is scarier than dope because it's unrecognizable
Ohh it is. We just ignored it for far too long...
Drugs alcohol internet workaholism shopiholism, escape from reality. Diassociation.
Please add to this title, the topic of tech addiction/childhood addictions is soo important and the speaker did an excellent job with that topic. Saving the brains and future of (all) children is more critical than the title topic of NDE. I do appreciate how his life (death) experiences led him to the work and TED stage he is on. Great Talk. Dovetail into infant psychology and how caregivers who are distracted (by tech/depression/narcissism/addiction etc) limit and cause great distress for young brains- example Still Face Experiment by Dr.Edward Tronick
Yeah but....Just go to a Hypnotherapist in ur locality n pay his fees n get a Past Life Regression done ....U will not hv to die to get that experience of the Other side .... I'm a practicing Hypnotherapist myself ...N do it to my clients regularly ....They love it ....What's more they r cured of various ailments psychological and pathological ....Keep an open mind ... Not everything in this world conforms to our holy books (due respect).... Reincarnation is true.....
Man’s Search For Meaning is the best book I’ve ever read. After I finished it, I bought 5 more copies off of Amazon so I could pass them out to people with the request that, once finished, they’d do the same. I recommend everyone reading this to read it. It will change you and it’s not a depressing read despite what one would expect. It’s obviously a sad story but the beauty and inspiration is in the telling. It’s amazing.
Who is the author ?
Sorry, forgot that part, kind of important lol. Victor Frankl.
Good but why don't you study ur own past life?.....Just go to a Hypnotherapist in ur locality n pay his fees n get a Past Life Regression done ....U will not hv to die to get that experience of the Other side .... Excellent talk. Very interesting and important. Thank you.
👏👏👏👍 Very I formative, valid and I support every word in this presentation. I pray many will acknowledge and circulate it👍✔️
This whole issue both bothers AND affects me profoundly. I've also come to realise that serving/helping others is the ultimate purpose for one's life!
I live by 'mans search for meaning' life changing book. Essentially Frankl says that things happen to you, terrible things, but it's how you choose to respond to those difficult things is up to you. He also said we have to find some sort of purpose and meaning in our lives, however small.
Good but why don't u research ur own past lif?.....Just go to a Hypnotherapist in ur locality n pay his fees n get a Past Life Regression done ....U will not hv to die to get that experience of the Other side .... great talk here, invaluable message to many people.
'Man's Search for Meaning" by Victor Frankl is one of my favorite Books...
I seen a video of a young girl on a plane, they had told her she had to turn her phone off and her mother had taken the phone. The child went into a melt down. I am a recovering addict, I’ve seen that behavior in addicts when they couldn’t get their next high. People were commenting how spoiled she was, what she needs is a good whooping and etc. I told them the child was having a classic addictive reaction in a way a drug addict would react if their drugs were taken away and the child was too young to even realize and didn’t have the tools to cope with it. No one was going for it. Imagine if someone walked up and took your phone, how would you react. Don’t give me “well the cost”. What are your habits with that phone? How long after you get up in the morning does it take for you to check it out? How many times a day do you look at it? Do you say “well everything is on it”? Exactly... And we’re adults.
Thank you @Nicholas Kardaras. You made me realise a major topic
Amazing talk and stellar content. I knew Dr Kardaras many years ago and found him to be engaging and insightful. I wholeheartedly agree with the information that is contained in this TED talk.
Brilliant- linking addiction with technology addiction
Excellent talk. Thank for for this.
You can't teach what you don't know. Great talk from a wise man with a lot of life experiences. Plus, Nick invokes the life of Viktor Frankl, one of my all-time favorite people that lived on this Earth. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I have.
Thank you for sharing. I know there are a lot of people hurting too ...Please know however, the continuation of life is real indeed...nothing to fear and comforting to know, we'll experience the Light and Love of Jesus.
wow that is a sobering assessment of how our tech induce reality has taken a hold in our society big time in 2020
I certainly wish school boards would take this into consideration. The curriculum everywhere needs to change back but not backwards. If we don’t save our children’s brains we will all pay in every manner possible.
I agree with you wholeheartedly but school boards are the decision makers. They do what they’re told to do by much higher powers. Going total digital/virtual is the plan of the men behind the curtain.
The province sets the curriculum here and then school boards administer it. When I see a kid with their face entranced by their phone it reminds me of Star Trek TNG and the Borg.
@@EE-lz7fp very true. I have a 7 year old daughter. The only phone/tablet time she gets is when other kids have them and I’m not around. She’s not gonna end up brain dead with ideologies manufactured for her by someone else.
I wish I had heard this all those years ago 💔Thank you for such valuable advice.
The Truth is in us😇
What information unreal amazing on levels of dopamine great lecture
very interesting, thought provoking talk. Well done. Not the talk I was expecting based on the title though.
Absolutely fascinating, thank you
Thank you. I am autistic. I also have ADD. I am not a gamer. I have recently found that searching for things on the internet has had a calming affect on me. This calm has been similar to when I relax in a meditative state or read an interesting book. I wonder how much of this calm is the dopaminergic effect of these activities. I would also describe myself as asexual.
really great! thanks so much 1
Interesting that he is making a presentation about the dangers of screen time, on the screen content provider of RUclips. What a world.
LMAO - So true! I stumbled upon this vid while doing a deep dive on NDEs. Fortunately, I was cleaning out our sewing area and just listening, so feel like I was at least being productive.
I can quite believe the addiction to computer games; I got addicted to zelda and in time when I went outside, I was sort of IN the game wanting to see clumps of reeds I could slash with my sword etc. It was weird; I realised I had gone too far.
Hello! Love this site. i can't remember when i first starting watching your TEDxTalks. Its been years now i feel. to revisit this site. Has helped me reconnect with my innerself. Thank you Tech. without your servies as awhole. i would not learn what i could. Because of world wide web. i just dont believe in contra-Pachama. to work well in this world here on earth we must also be in tune with our surroundings and communities. It is important to speak up for the right causes. We are all Humans - like it or not. Can we all try and be mindful about that everyday and towards others in return? Famous words 'Treat others as you would do unto you!" Maybe a fresher word to use as a brand would be earthling! As we all are just that animals, plants sea, bacteria, microobes land and air included. Can we be as how we know we should be? Does that have to be a challenge before anyone will take it up as everyday dealings and being?
i like to just keep things simple.
with Best and kindest regards for all you guys and gals do to contribute to this new world we have entered.
Always Gill;Dx
Thank you!
Brilliant!!
You made a connection with me I totally understand the dysfunction
Yep. I definitely agree tech addiction is screwing our young people.
This is so interesting!
thank you
enlighten talk by own experience
My great grandma had a nde. She was taking through clouds by her hand by her deceased toddler and her toddler was told. No. You have to turn her back to earth ... She’s not ready and then great grandma said she felt like her body went zoom. And back into like a cocoon in like a hard shell I hope I’m describing it right. Anyhow this was many many years ago when people wouldn’t even speak of nde ..
Surprising !
Avoidance of life, reality is dissociation via the internet.
I'm trying to see if I died or was just unconscious. Electric shock, seen the light at that moment I was the light
Hey Edward, if you'd like to share your experience in more detail, we'd love to hear it!
Thanks for the life
I wish he would've shared more about his Near death Experience and what he saw.
Thanks is very very good teachin 🙏🙏🇳🇿🇳🇿🙏
Incredible that people who create technology do not let their children use it because they know the danger.
Thank you !!!
Star Trek reference won me over.
It would be interesting to compare the dopaminergic values of the 1998 technology to the technology of today
wrong title but good talk, you should rename and release again if you havn't already but its an important talk more relevant now in 2020 than ever before, thanks
You make a good point. People need this lecture more than ever.
This content is a beam of enlightenment. A book I read with related themes was a source of significant personal growth. "A Life Unplugged: Reclaiming Reality in a Digital Age" by Theodore Blaze
I've been saying it for years -- the Unabomber was right. Not his methods. They were of course immoral in the extreme. But his message was spot on -- and incredibly prescient.
Read his manifesto. His focus is on technology in general, not just tech targeting kids. But his conclusions are much the same as Dr. Kardaras's, and his warnings are just as valid -- and just as urgent.
I'm not getting any orgasms when I turn on my phone or computer or laptop or tablet.
Well, unless...
but let's not go there.
Seriously, it IS addicting. I TRY not to look when I'm out and about but I think the innate drive for social contact has become a 24/7 compulsion. We don't want to be alone with ourselves anymore. Not for a minute.
And that's not such a good thing.
Know thy self.
Before we can start to know others
The first NDE without memory of reaching the Bright Light Paradise. I wish more studies where done on why the majority of Near Deaths (80-90%) do not have this experience.
Yep ...But why don't u do research on ur own past life?....Just go to a Hypnotherapist in ur locality n pay his fees n get a Past Life Regression done ....U will not hv to die to get that experience of the Other side .... I'm a practicing Hypnotherapist myself ...N do it to my clients regularly ....They love it ....What's more they r cured of various ailments psychological and pathological ....Keep an open mind ... @@shashinigam007 MMMM INTRESTING!!!!
Some 20 years ago, I coined the term 'screen babies.'
Keep your kids away from the internet, gaming, and television. If they want to be entertained, give them books.
I am being entertained by the internet by watching this
My son has been addicted to the video games forever now he's addicted to drugs and has no drive to do anything
Interview with dr-Peter fenwick about near death experience
question is, who would want to come back from the dead today?
It's not only kids who are addicted to technology,
Prayer
Bait and switch.
He’s dead on. Totally disconnected.
More evidence-based studies need to be done to accelerate societal awareness.
Asystole for 1 hr and 15 minutes and he did not have have any sequalae from being anoxic? I don't understand...
Today's parents KNOW that this is a major problem, yet the give a toddler a cell phone to play with, a laptop or notebook when they are old enough to understand it. So the kids have electronic babysitters while the parents have their cell phones in hand with both thumbs furiously clicking away for hours. Welcome to the Technical Dystopia.

Sadly TRUE

Does the doctor have a personal knowledge az his savior?
Shout out to technology addiction 30k views! Woot woot!
Please change the title of this.
What?.......where is the NDE?
Where in the title does it mention "NDE"? " Nick shares his personal story of coming back from the dead" He mentioned that he did NOT see the light when he was clinically dead, ergo no NDE. This is about his transformational event based on dying from a lethal overdose.
Damn
You're right. I'm tired of waiting for it so I'm turning this off.
What the F... I thought he was going to talk about his dead experience
He did...In a meaningful way!
And yet we are very glad we were brought to this vid. This topic is HUGE. So important. Think about it: Steve Jobs, inventor of "the smartphone", did not allow his own children to own it. AND most developers sent their children to non tech schools.
Thanks for the heads up
U don't hv to be disappointed....
