  • Took a trip in my friend's P180 Avanti I that he recently upgraded with a brand new Garmin glass panel. Took off from HHR and headed for Denver. Pay extra attention to the fuel flows, speeds and economy of this thing - it's a marvel. Beautiful flight at mainly FL370. An absolute dream machine for me personally and my bucket list plane.

    I got my PPL way back in the day at HHR. Hardly see any video from there. Most recently our company operated a number of Metros and Merlins, but during the PPL days it was BE-200's and 414's and we once got a WWII into there, but this departure seemed like a new record for clearing the fence. Way back in the early 80's a 727 landed there by mistake, removed interior and affixed JATOS to get it back out and over to LAX. Now I remember where I picked up your channel - it was a PA-60, and then at AC-500 IIRC, or did that become a 690 later?

    So surprised that only 200 + Piagio 180's Evos have been sold so far after 12 years production as its such a fabulous well designed aircraft, whys that ?

    • @stratobee
      @stratobee  3 года назад +3

      Many reasons. It's unconventional looking and aircraft buyers are very conservative. Also, it was priced as a light jet (as it had similar performance), and many customers who are going to spend $7 million would then rather be seen in a true jet, as propellers still carry stigma. Also, there was here in US a skepticism against Piaggio and Italian manufacturers that played in and they worried about service and parts availability.
      Today the owner/pilot customer has discovered it in the used market as a cheaper alternative to jets. Piaggio made the mistake of marketing it to charter and jet companies when they should have been targeting it to business owner/pilots from the beginning.

    I absolutely love that this P180 has the analog engine gauges of the original version, but has the Garmin glass panel upgrade. Just wish it could have auto throttle, that would be perfect, but apparently not possible. Any idea how much the Garmin upgrade cost for equipment and installation? Thanks for the great video. A bit more dwell time on the instruments to give more time to take in the info on them would be nice, but I guess I can hit pause!

    • @HQBergeron

      Also noticed the tap tap on the left ITT gauge to get the needle to work. Is that common? Not a big deal since it has the digital numeric readout as well as the needle, but very nice to have the needle for a quick glance to make sure temp is in proper range.

    • @stratobee
      @stratobee  3 года назад +1

      It's on par with a Mustang or VLJ. About $1000-1200/hr plane. The most expensive thing on these is the gear inspection every 12 years. It's very expensive. But fortunately, if you're part 91, you don't have to comply with that. Also, these are "big block" PT6's and they are expensive to overhaul. But the great economy comes in it's performance. You simply can't find anything that does 370kts on 460pph total and carries 9 people in stand-up cabin.
