It took me 8 years to help my friends clean their home. It wasnt garbage but everything else. We could've opened a clothing store, bookstore and a pharmacy from everything in that house. It was such a relief when we finished and they were able to sell it.

I am so glad I am not a hoarder, my parents were to an extent, not dirty just odd stuff like a bag of little of wires. Took forever to clean out their house. I just lost my husband of 44 years three weeks ago. I will watch myself closely to see if I pick this problem up. Depression effects people differently.

Not a hoarder but I have clutter & a small house. I have a clutter purge every 3-6mths. My declutter tips-
Watch Hoarders-gets me in a mood where I can be merciless getting rid of stuff.
Start with utility rooms, kitchen & bathroom. Usually not many sentimental items so choices are about usefulness. I'm doing my kitchen today.
Take before & after pics-very satisfying & gives you a sense of achievement.
Make it a bit fun-put on music, have a drink or whatever puts you in a good mood. You will do more if it's not like a chore.
Bedroom- I pull all clothes out, try on those I'm not sure if they fit & put in charity bag if not. Throw shabby clothes.
EDIT cos I forgot 1. Stick to one room at a time so that you see a rewarding difference. Potter around in different rooms & it won't look like you've made any difference. That is disheartening.

I was helping a relative with her “mess” one day, she turned on a fan and right behind it was a wall full of black mold. Within minutes, i got dizzy then could not hold my head up. I had to be driven home. It took me a few hours to get back to normal. Didn’t affect her at all.

Perhaps, but unless his living conditions bother him and he wants to change, the chances of any success from therapy is very, very low. And in most free democracies, people are allowed to be odd, make “bad” decisions, etc. It can be tricky to tell when odd becomes too odd and harmful.

It is amazing how hoarders are disappointed over not having family visit.
It is disappointing, but make other arranhements. Why force people to slip and slide on paper rubble, breathe dirty air, sit among cobwebs or have a dirt cup for tea.
Meet them somewhere. Puy on some fresh clean clothes and meet them for lunch.
Hard to get your head around.

For majority of them. Yes. They don't realize that they have a mental illness. They believe their home and the way they live is normal, be ause that's all they have ever known.
Shoot in the last video the guy was in his 80s. His mother was a hoarder. He grew up in a hoarding house so he new nothing different so he also hoarded newspapers, TVs, paper, magazines, and whatever else to him held historic value.
So for them it's normal way of life, and all they know. They don't think it's a mental illness because of this.
And it's also hard for them to get the realization that the hoarding is wrong/bad and that they do have a problem and need help.

It’s hard for a normal person to understand, but a person with ocd or adhd, or people on the spectrum, just can’t handle organizational and cleaning tasks that just seem obvious to most of us. They just don’t see or smell things like other people do. It’s very difficult to understand, but think of this like people who have a learning disability like dyslexia, and they just can’t make sense of words the way others can. These people need compassion and patience. It’s a frustrating situation.
