So not only did I learn how to clean my cast iron properly but I learned that the burners on a stove are called "eyes" as well. 😆 I never heard this before and had to Google it to see if I was hearing correctly and sure enough southerners call burners "👀 " Originally from wood stoves and a term for Whirlpool brand stoves. I love learning something new everyday. Blessings ❤🙏
I love, love my cast iron. I was given my grandmother's when she passed because the family knew that I would use it. So much history (and use) with those pans. I couldn't have gotten a better gift.
I'm so happy that you don't heat the pans before washing them under the water. Trying to maneuver a hot pan under hot water and tons of steam with foggy glasses was almost impossible. I'm brand new to cast iron but I followed your advice and invested in a few sizes of pots and pans when the time came to change my t-fals. I'll use your method of cleaning from now on and save myself the trouble
Good video! I think lard is the best to use on cast iron, but I’ve heard that flaxseed oil is great for the original seasoning. Although, there are conflicting reports on that as well. I use a baking soda paste on mine if I’ve cooked something strongly seasoned. I let it sit for a while and rinse it off. Thanks for sharing!
Oh good, I bought the same scrubbers. I did good on that part. Half way cleaning a used one I bought a year ago from an antique store and just haven't taken the time for it until now. I'm doing a dry scrub with baking soda and that steel pad ball to start and the old grease and moth ball smell coming off of it reminds me of my great grandma's house in the country growing up. It stinks but you kind of want to bottle that smell from your childhood. lol
Happy Mother's Day! I've been collecting cast iron (new and supposedly pre-seasoned) for quite some time now as we intend to have it seasoned by the time our homestead is ready to be lived on. I can't wait for the day.Anyway, I've found it helpful to get a good season to cook things like bacon and to pan-fry meats or make something like deep fried fritters in newly cleaned and seasoned cast iron. I'm not sure why solid shortening or lard is recommended for the step after cleaning them with hot water? Does it actually matter if you use oil or solid shortening/fat?
I know this is a super old video but, can I store my cast iron in the oven and do I need to take it out when I cook in the oven? I don't use it mainly because I don't know how. When my dad passed away I got all his pieces. He probably had 20-30 pieces. Those I put in my spare room. Am I doing it wrong. I want to try to learn how to use it but I haven't done it yet.
What number is your Griswold? These numbers confusing lol. Number 4 is a 6in and 6 is a 8 in. Yours looked like a nice size. So was curious what number was on your skillet
Hello that is awesome. We have two 12 inch, one 8 inch and two dutch ovens that are cast iron. I never heard of not using dish soap on them but I will try it next time we use them. Thank you for sharing, God bless stay safe and have a great day
Is it safe to use bare cast iron with tomato sauce and acids?.. I am confused , because they say enamled are for anything but they get scratches when bare ones are forever... Help me please
I fry eggs jut they come out with black residue stuck to eggs what’s wrong with the cast iron? It’s well seasoned bcuz they don’t stick or anything else I cook in them
Soap is designed to remove oil, therefore soap will damage your seasoning. Some say this is a myth but I have personally had cast iron pans ruined from uniformed house members trying to be helpful in cleaning my cast iron with soap or put in dishwasher. So I choose to follow the traditional way myth or not for cleaning my cast iron
OK, somebody help me out. Had the whole pan all stripped down to nothing. Rinsed it out good, put it on the burner to dry and heat up. Called Dad (country boy) and I told him how far along I was, sent pictures and said "Dad, I'm putting it in the oven. Bacon grease or Crisco?" He said bacon grease. Cool. Covered the whole thing including the handle, put it in the oven at 350 for an hour. It has cooled for round two. It's sticky as crap! I didn't think I had too much bacon grease and wiped out the excess. What did I do wrong before I start round two?

I have never considered it being called anything other than an eye, lol
thanks for the info. I was not sure what she was saying or where she was keeping the pans lol
Haha lol, I had no idea I was speaking a foreign language 😂

What a beautiful gift indeed my sister inherited my momma's Dutch oven and it's such a treasured piece

sweet content That 1870's Homestead. I smashed that thumbs up on your video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much, that helped me so much now I know why they would rust back up on me

The very best to season is most definitely ghee butter, try it youll understand
Nice pans! Great job with the skillets too 😉
Always wanted to try cast iron, thanks for the video I think I’ll give it a go!
You should, but again I recommend just going antiquing and finding one that doesn't appear pitted, or rusted or with a bunch of "junk" built up on it
Thank you, this was helpful
Awesome jacket. Under Armour is the best

Thanks for your sharing and I from Hongkong
I want to try to use cast-iron, but the no soap part gets me😂

It doesn't matter whether you use liquid or solid fats. Iron will rust so you have to maintain the coating on it
Sue S Vegetable oils tend to harden more sticky than lard.

@@1870s thank you and yes we do enjoy having those cast iron. 😁👍💜❤
thank you
Happy Mother's day and i hope your having a super AWESOME day ❤
Thank you, you too
Good Morning Happy Mothers Day
Same to you
What if I cook something spicy like peppers does it come out of the pan or will it keep the spicy flavor? Thank you
No it doesn't stay in pan
Do you wash it right after using or let it cool?
Easier to clean when warm
I do wonder how greasy it makes the pans when stacking after you grease them. I do not have the room to leave my pans in the stove.
Is it safe to use bare cast iron with tomato sauce and acids?.. I am confused , because they say enamled are for anything but they get scratches when bare ones are forever... Help me please
It can be okay to do, but you can't do it with anything that you're going to cook for a really long time. The acid will break down the codeine a bit
You do it how my mom used to do it and how I do it.
I fry eggs jut they come out with black residue stuck to eggs what’s wrong with the cast iron? It’s well seasoned bcuz they don’t stick or anything else I cook in them
Can I use shortening for seasoning my cast iron?
Yes, or lard even. We've found best results using flak seed or grape seed oil. But almost any will work.
I am new to cast iron cooking. Why do you not use soap?
Soap is designed to remove oil, therefore soap will damage your seasoning. Some say this is a myth but I have personally had cast iron pans ruined from uniformed house members trying to be helpful in cleaning my cast iron with soap or put in dishwasher. Can you use bacon grease to season cast iron pans
You can, but if you leave them sit long it can get funky. If you use them many times per week like we do, you can get away with it.
Why would you not want to use olive oil?
We don't eat pork, what's the next best oil after lard?
I used coconut oil before I had my lard
@@1870s Thank you Rachel!
Why pig lard and do you have a video showing making the lard?
Because we raise our own pigs and have alot of it. I do have a video on making it
I sometimes cook for Muslim people so what can I use instead of lard?
Flak Seed or Grape Seed oil.

Sticky is almost always too much oil.
If you have food sticking to your cast you are not caring for it correctly, my cast iron , never sticks ,eggs float on layer of oil
I usually use olive oil.
Why not you?
You shouldn't cook with olive oil at high temps and olive oil has a much shorter shelf life for pieces that are not used frequently
Just throw it in the dishwasher. 🤣
Pig and coconut oil
both great choices, before I had my pig lard I used coconut oil or avocado oil
@@1870s that's awesome I know pig lard is the original old school way and normally the old ways are best ❤️. Happy mother's day hun!!!!
