    Exactly what I needed to hear. My sales were taking off last year, this year I feel like it’s dying. I was doing the same things as last year and I’m thinking maybe that’s the problem. I need to evolve and try new strategies and keeping up with Etsy’s changes. It’s easy for me to get comfortable when sales are good. Thanks for giving us real Etsy advice. So sick of hearing the same tips and tricks from other sellers that will only get you so far.

    As a customer here’s a good story: I’m a welder and a woman. Going shopping for metal and welders at specialty stores you learn that you’re not welcome as a customer in some places! Luckily there are many stores that are welcoming of women and artists, but thinking of how I was treated at some stores reminds me that I would never want to make my customers feel like that.

    • @KaraBuntin
      @KaraBuntin  2 года назад

      Yeah, I used to go shopping wearing a fake wedding ring just to see how I was treated differently. It was always interesting to find out that even without a husband being physically there with me, they usually ended up selling to him in their sales pitches to me.

    “You don’t know your products” SO true!! I never thought my customers would want my jewelry for weddings!! Sounds obvious- but I didn’t think my jewelry was fancy enough and I am afraid of brides! So I wasn’t about to market to them! Then a friend ordered 6 of a certain cuff for her wedding, and it was a wonderful experience for me, nothing like I feared! Lol!

    The problem with free shipping is that if you are selling precious items such as vintage or jewellery and you're in Australia, we simply cannot afford to offer free shipping. For two reasons...1. Economy shipping comes with massive risks due to no insurance, no tracking so some buyers can claim the item hasn't been received or it genuinely gets lost. 2. The shipping with tracking and insurance is so expensive that you have to add so much to your product that you lose not only the profit but it eats into the cost of the item.

    • @KaraBuntin
      @KaraBuntin  3 года назад +1

      Definitely don’t offer free shipping unless you build it into the cost of the item. And use tracking.

    You made me curious about how my vintage clothes might be used by people, I will do some research. I opened my Etsy shop only about three months ago and my first listings had very techy titles and keywords. The most important thing to me seemed the decade, the cut of the dress, composition, fabric structure... Just the way I think about clothes. For example, 1960s babydoll peignoir set in nylon tricot chiffon... Then I add colour, size and other info like that. Keywords would be similar to the title. Basically, I would treat my potential customers as dress historians, not someone who just wants a beautiful piece to wear. It's challenging to step out of your own head and understand how other people might view your product. Food for thought! Thank you!

    I think one of the worst choices I ever made was joining all those Etsy for sale groups on Facebook. Full of know it all’s that didn’t know shyte but man they sure loved to run their mouths and belittle and insult anyone looking for help. They honestly didn’t know any more than myself and I knew there was more to learn, somewhere. I enjoy my Etsy shop so much more after leaving those toxic groups full of hormonal keyboard warriors 🤣🤣🤣

There's a very strict one whose admin scolds anyone using eRank or Marmalead, which is nonsense and pretty ridiculous to be honest as they're great tools, alongside other techniques. They are like "ONLY MY COURSE WORKS, ONLY ETSY AUTO-POPULATING KEYWORDS WORK, ANYTHING ELSE IS USELESS. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MENTION IT IN HERE". Wow, take a chill pill, dude. :P

    It's obvious "why". They want to be amazon and do not listen to the little guys. Their "free shipping" push is unethical. It should be called "shipping included" if we all wanted to be honest with our customers.

    • @KaraBuntin
      @KaraBuntin  2 года назад +1

      Well, if people don't know that "free shipping" doesn't mean that shipping is included they're pretty naive. Actually, a lot of sellers DON'T add the cost of shipping into their prices, so for some people I guess that's an issue.

      I have everything under one business license and have DBAs for the second and third shop. I file everything under the Cake To Remember LLC umbrella as far as sales tax and income taxes go. It's going to vary depending on where you are, but in Virginia you have to have a DBA filed before you sell anything under the name.

      The problem with creating something brand new is that nobody knows it exists, so you'll have to do a lot more of your own promotion on social media to get the word out. When your patent is complete you might want to go to local pet stores to see if they'd be interested in carrying it, or at least letting you put some in the stores to get it in front of people. If nobody knows about it they won't know to search for it, so starting local and promoting it on social media so that people learn about it will be important.
