After a couple years of on/off injury cycles post-Covid, '24 was looking bright. I hit a HM PR, and I was seeing some of my favorite little trail segments fly past me faster than I had before. This was like the proof that if you persevere and keep trying even through serial set-backs, there is a light on the other end of it all (even for a 46-year old). Then 2-weeks back I had a little head-cold that became flu-like, and I now know is pneumonia. This happened at a not particularly stressful time (actually it was a slight recovery period). It's been hard not to feel negative and want to just give in to the "universe" with this latest setback. The walk to the mailbox leaves me heaving for air (or to clear the CO2). But when I let go of the frustrations, I know this is life in a nutshell through the prism of running and training and aging and sickness and health. Anyway, watching this video, particularly the ending, was powerful for me. Makes me feel one with the universe and less an enemy of it. Thank you for sharing your raw, personal experiences here for all of our benefit.

Stephen you never ever get rid of it. Its wonderful or its a curse. I have raced since running against people like Craig Virgin and Joe Falcon and Alberto Salazar. Now my journey is in masters track and masters distance running. I win most of the time but the fire is still there and I am sure 20 years from now you will be trying to dominate at masters running. Bekele just set a new bar of 2.04 for a 40 year old and it doesnt get any easier at any age .

Endurance is about enduring right? Don’t get so caught up paces all the time, focus on the duration. Time being active that time make a huge difference. Double runs everyday is absolutely the best way to build super strong endurance. Or if you can’t do that. Double activities. 1 run and 1 cross train(arc trainer/bike etc) put in all that work in dark mode we don’t need to see it just give us a 4 week update and then go back in dark mode

Hey, thank you for phrasing that part about your identity the way you did. When you’re on the way out of a sport collegiately or professionally, a lot of therapists, coaches, and loved ones will say it was just something you did and not part of your identity. But I think that’s just something they say to be nice and make you feel better about moving on. How could it not be an innate part of who you are after that amount of time and energy spent. I’m new here but I know the mindset you’re taking about. You got this!

Great wisdom as always Scully. This is why I personally love trail running, it's such a great metaphor for life - there's so much exploration to be done - competitively, physically, mentally, geographically etc - that getting lost on the journey and seeing where you end up is the real beauty in it all.

The marathon is cruel, you don't get many goes to get it right. A 1500m runner or 5k athlete etc gets lots of chances to qualify. Fair play for sticking at it, inspirational stuff. As an older runner this also makes me think about all the excuses I make to not get it right.

You are the coach and the inspiration for us all, but I heard this quote that you may also like: "Remove the doubt with certainty". For me this means I know what I need to do to be able to run a marathon on X:XX time, so by doing the things I need to do, I will get closer to it. I could have a high white blood cell count because my body is fighting a tooth infection, or have really bad weather on race day, but I will be satisfied knowing I did everything I was supposed to do to succeed.
    Thanks again! You rock.

Last year I decided to really train for a marathon (I ran two before but without training properly) and I managed to run it in 3h22; I was quite motivated, I had recovered well and decided to go for sub 3:10, but I simply couldn't, the body was there but the head was not, mentally I was finished, I abandoned the preparation and continued simply training normally and fell into a huge emotional low. I hated running (I've been running for 20 years), a few months ago I went back to the gym and running...I missed it, it's my favorite sport and I had to go away to see it.

Thats the beauty of sport. Everybody is trying their best, everybody is moving in the right direction, but for everybody there are different rocks in the path. And not just at the top, those middlefield people and those at the back are in it too. Just with different abilities and ressources.
It's funny that it was a tooth infection, i guessd a normal cold. Thats the brutality of the sport. Any infection etc. will put anyone out of the top 10. But you can't hide yourself either, you need to get out, risk it and get the work done that needs to be done.
I wont remember you as the one who failed to go to the olympics. You are the one who took us on a journey to try and get to the olympics. And you are the guy who takes us with you when you go running and racing.

I think of this sometimes, "king of not giving up" not that I'd give myself that label, but I'm 35 now, and I don't need to run 12-15 miles everyday. I could definitely just decide that will do, but I dunno, I like to think I feel at home when I'm trying to push my fitness forward. It's not always with a big race goal in mind, and sometimes it's for research more than anything if something would work, but of course in the hopes if it did in fact work, THEN i'd smash a race haha.. but I've long accepted I just love running, and trying to get fitter / faster or back towards peak fitness, speed.
