I hardly ever comment on RUclips but you are such an exception to this rule. It really does feel like you are true mentor with real weight of this word. Thank you for what you're doing Scully, I appreciate you a lot!
It might be a cliche but you are so inspiring Steven. I'm so glad to see you bounce back so positively. I hope you never stop running. You have inspired me to start training for my first marathon. I hope I bump into you one day and I can give you "the nod".
Your youtube videos helped me as a 40+ male run under a 2hr half-marathon...improvement of 30 mins. over the course of 2yrs. Your advice and talks are definitely a must for anyone that wants to get into serious running. I'll keep watching you and hoping to improve further, thank you!
The way you describe running, as every time you think you have it figured out something happens and you have to figure it out again, is a great description of my daily experience playing the trumpet!
I'm running the Boston Marathon in April and I couldn't be more stoked. I've got the Richmond marathon in November before then. I'm getting as much zone 2 in now to work up for that. I'm shooting to PR below 2:52, I love the channel and I love the content. You have inspired me so much! Thank you and hey if you get your tooth pulled you'll be a little lighter and maybe a bit faster? Hahaha
Man, you just motivated me to train harder. You have a way to inspire people like no other, that's why I like coming back to this channel. I love your mindset and can't wait to see where it's gonna take you coming forward. Instead of caving in, you've made a 180 turn and are ready for battle. I f'in love it!
As a dentist specialized in Periodontics, and as a marathon runner, I am happy to see you giving importance (which I think it deserves) to your teeth. They are more important than people think. Cheers
Stephen you never ever get rid of it. Its wonderful or its a curse. I have raced since running against people like Craig Virgin and Joe Falcon and Alberto Salazar. Now my journey is in masters track and masters distance running. I win most of the time but the fire is still there and I am sure 20 years from now you will be trying to dominate at masters running. Bekele just set a new bar of 2.04 for a 40 year old and it doesnt get any easier at any age .
After a couple years of on/off injury cycles post-Covid, '24 was looking bright. I hit a HM PR, and I was seeing some of my favorite little trail segments fly past me faster than I had before. This was like the proof that if you persevere and keep trying even through serial set-backs, there is a light on the other end of it all (even for a 46-year old). Then 2-weeks back I had a little head-cold that became flu-like, and I now know is pneumonia. This happened at a not particularly stressful time (actually it was a slight recovery period). It's been hard not to feel negative and want to just give in to the "universe" with this latest setback. The walk to the mailbox leaves me heaving for air (or to clear the CO2). But when I let go of the frustrations, I know this is life in a nutshell through the prism of running and training and aging and sickness and health. Anyway, watching this video, particularly the ending, was powerful for me. Makes me feel one with the universe and less an enemy of it. Thank you for sharing your raw, personal experiences here for all of our benefit.
Hey, thank you for phrasing that part about your identity the way you did. When you’re on the way out of a sport collegiately or professionally, a lot of therapists, coaches, and loved ones will say it was just something you did and not part of your identity. But I think that’s just something they say to be nice and make you feel better about moving on. How could it not be an innate part of who you are after that amount of time and energy spent. I’m new here but I know the mindset you’re taking about. You got this!
Great wisdom as always Scully. This is why I personally love trail running, it's such a great metaphor for life - there's so much exploration to be done - competitively, physically, mentally, geographically etc - that getting lost on the journey and seeing where you end up is the real beauty in it all.
Very inspiring! And I needed it! As we approach our 50s health challenges present themselves, and we have to figure out how to navigate around and “not give up!”🏃🏻♂️👍
You are the coach and the inspiration for us all, but I heard this quote that you may also like: "Remove the doubt with certainty". For me this means I know what I need to do to be able to run a marathon on X:XX time, so by doing the things I need to do, I will get closer to it. I could have a high white blood cell count because my body is fighting a tooth infection, or have really bad weather on race day, but I will be satisfied knowing I did everything I was supposed to do to succeed. Thanks again! You rock.
Wow a consistant drop of 10 is a big deal (it is the one metric besides sleep quality I actually follow) and you still managed to put a great performance. Only from getting pissed the night before or post race does mine drop like that. Now you just get to run great races .. and no doubt you will
My HRV has improved according to my whoop from average 45 to 55 since I changed my breathing during running. I’ve always been a mouth breather but I’ve been trying breath through my nose since watching this channel
Hey Stephen! I'm your fan from Russia and just want to tell you thank you for everything you've done and going to do in future, your advices have a lot of info and I find them helpful Be strong, healthy and wealthy All the best from Russia 😃😃😃
i’d love to see you try out some ultras, i wonder if the long runs in the mountains would feed the soul. you have such a talent for story telling and i’d just love to see your journey and how you would adapt your training and whether you would love it
Thats the beauty of sport. Everybody is trying their best, everybody is moving in the right direction, but for everybody there are different rocks in the path. And not just at the top, those middlefield people and those at the back are in it too. Just with different abilities and ressources. It's funny that it was a tooth infection, i guessd a normal cold. Thats the brutality of the sport. Any infection etc. will put anyone out of the top 10. But you can't hide yourself either, you need to get out, risk it and get the work done that needs to be done. I wont remember you as the one who failed to go to the olympics. You are the one who took us on a journey to try and get to the olympics. And you are the guy who takes us with you when you go running and racing.
Couldn’t agree with you more abt the how a tooth infection affects you. I had one in my wisdom tooth last xc season and felt awful during that week of running.
Good man Scully. Keep er lit! Interesting about the HRV - mine has been low a week or two. I wish the wee one would give me a good nights sleep so i could rule that out as the cause 😂
Last year I decided to really train for a marathon (I ran two before but without training properly) and I managed to run it in 3h22; I was quite motivated, I had recovered well and decided to go for sub 3:10, but I simply couldn't, the body was there but the head was not, mentally I was finished, I abandoned the preparation and continued simply training normally and fell into a huge emotional low. I hated running (I've been running for 20 years), a few months ago I went back to the gym and running...I missed it, it's my favorite sport and I had to go away to see it.
Trying to buy some gear to support you and your journey, are there any options for US supporters to maybe buy within a running store? Love the raw honesty, keep it up.
Someone else mentioned ultsarunning too, but it might be a good changeup for you. Can start with something like Two Oceans or Comrades, which are on the roads and more familiar to you, but there is a lot you can keep building on in ultras while trying something new.
Real life, non of this instagram nonsense “don’t look at me I’m shy” so refreshing…you grab that stick and even when laying face down in the dirt…free solo next on your movie list…I’ve just T’d up last Samurai…wot a movie
Thanks Steven, is it bad for a regular dude 36yo to keep the body at sub 3 thon level long term? I have been hammering my heart and legs for over an hour a day almost every day for 2 years
To be honest Stephen... I'd much rather follow an HONEST runner, than a Instagram Runner (where life is perfect).... we all have ups and downs and Its great listening to your try and try honesty!!!! ~ Keep it up!! and Focus on the NOW
If you like that Last Samurai scene, you'll really like the scene in Cool Hand Luke that inspired it. The whole movie is a perfect encapsulation of that "keep getting back up" attitude. ruclips.net/video/Bzk_5Jzvxdk/видео.html
Has anyone purchased his marathon plan? I’m curious about trying it out, but my current marathon is over 16 weeks away. I’m wondering if there anything mentioned in the plan on what to do if that’s the case.
The marathon is cruel, you don't get many goes to get it right. A 1500m runner or 5k athlete etc gets lots of chances to qualify. Fair play for sticking at it, inspirational stuff. As an older runner this also makes me think about all the excuses I make to not get it right.
Endurance is about enduring right? Don’t get so caught up paces all the time, focus on the duration. Time being active that time make a huge difference. Double runs everyday is absolutely the best way to build super strong endurance. Or if you can’t do that. Double activities. 1 run and 1 cross train(arc trainer/bike etc) put in all that work in dark mode we don’t need to see it just give us a 4 week update and then go back in dark mode
If your HRV is consistently lower than usual, it could be a sign of an underlying issue like an infection. However, everyone is different so I wouldn5 worry
From USA, I tried to order a shirt from your Jogging Room, but I got an error message: "Shipping not available Items in the cart do not meet price or weight requirements to qualify for shipping. Update your cart and try again." Also: Buy a water pick and start flossing, is my tip to you.
Why would you censor the "fuck"s out? It's who you are, isn't it? People still know what you say, wouldn't it be less pretentious to just not cut those bits out? We watch the videos for who you are, not for anything else. :-)
I hardly ever comment on RUclips but you are such an exception to this rule. It really does feel like you are true mentor with real weight of this word. Thank you for what you're doing Scully, I appreciate you a lot!

I love it Scully, your intro music really suits your content. "You are a gift"

Thank you for your vulnerability. That was so inspiring.
You're my new favorite runner. These videos have me now training again trying to reach Marathon potential. Much ❤
Always look forward to your talks Scully!

I’d love to see more full gym specific videos. There’s not enough from elite runners.
I’m in Phoenix - welcome back to AZ!

If this video can’t motivate ya then do the nice thing and place runners in the bin….well done Stephen inspiring
Too legit to quit! Love it
Look into using a hyperbaric chamber for recovery it works really well.
There’s a good saying, it goes “Done it better than perfect because perfect never gets done”.
Inspiring response to the uncontrollables. Why go to the moon? Because we can. Let’s go to the moon. Right on Scully.
Trying to buy some gear to support you and your journey, are there any options for US supporters to maybe buy within a running store?
Love the raw honesty, keep it up.
The animal is back with a vengeance! 👌

There’s always ultrarunning! UTMB?
Hi Stephen… Can I ask you what are the shorts you’re wearing in this video whilst out running? Thanks
Has anyone purchased his marathon plan? I’m curious about trying it out, but my current marathon is over 16 weeks away. I’m wondering if there anything mentioned in the plan on what to do if that’s the case.
Yep teeth are a thing o.O I experienced that. But giving up is not an option ;) we'll geep trying.

How come you can see the selfie stick in the shadow, but you can't see the physical selfie stick? It's.... Invisible 🤔🤷

pro-tip: do that tooth work, anything non-emergency, not in the us&a. 5-10x less cost.
Keep the tooth!!
Stephen im.36 far from elite male 6.1 14 stone resting hr trending down now at 46 .
. Are you saying thats bad im worried
Lower resting hr is usually a good sign of fitness
If your HRV is consistently lower than usual, it could be a sign of an underlying issue like an infection. However, everyone is different so I wouldn5 worry
Btw I use a whoop to track mine
You should still try to get 2.09 again. Regardless of olympics- prove you can do it
Go for the 2.08 Stevo 💪🇮🇪🛷
Running coach?
I hope you get a new brand to sponsor you! Nike or Adidas. No offence to UA. Will make a world of a difference if you had AF3 or Prime X2 etc.
Biggest difference running with Prime x2 he would be disqualified in the elite field of marathons 🤣
Hello sir
You will run LA ‘28 🦁
When you go to the dentist and she asks: just control, tooth decay or HRV?
From USA, I tried to order a shirt from your Jogging Room, but I got an error message: "Shipping not available Items in the cart do not meet price or weight requirements to qualify for shipping. Update your cart and try again." Also: Buy a water pick and start flossing, is my tip to you.
Western States Scully?!
LA 2028 🦁
People relate more to you if you fail every now and again
Why would you censor the "fuck"s out? It's who you are, isn't it? People still know what you say, wouldn't it be less pretentious to just not cut those bits out? We watch the videos for who you are, not for anything else. :-)
