Possibly one of the few videos that said, "run hard in training to prepare yourself for running hard on the day", as opposed to, "run zone two at a super slow pace to run fast"
Yea... I find the whole "run slow to run fast" is an oversimplification of the idea that most people need to start with running slow to build the strength required to carry out the necessary speed/hard work. Slow running is not a substitute for hard work and real speed sessions - it's the stepping stone to be able to do said speed sessions (and the bridge from one hard workout to the next as active recovery).
@carina9629 .Mark Allen 'flogged' himself in training and achieved great results. However, it was only after he met Dr Maffetone and started to 'go slow' did he achieve the multiple victories that his talent thoroughly deserved. Fascinating case study.
Heading to Amsterdam by myself in less than 3 weeks. Going for a sub 3. So nervous! Still some work to do. I know I will be in pain! Edit: I ran a 2.57!
So true that you won’t always feel good. Been on a vacation this week and managed to do 2.5 hours yesterday in hot and humid conditions and didn’t once think it was possible until I got it done. This is one of those days I’ll be looking back at when things get hard on race day!
Dear Stephen. This is the best video I have ever watched about marathon training. I have learnt and reflected a lot from this video. Even for emotional and feeling the fire in my belly! I just want to say thank you to you. For context, I am 35 and have done 5 marathons. PB for the first 4, down to 2:59 in Paris and back to 3:01 in Berlin. You are a huge inspiration for me!! J
First marathon in Perth ( Australia ) this Sunday and your videos have helped immensely. The training and nutrition tips are great but I find your ways in dealing with phycological aspects have been a game changer for me. You're a legend Scully, appreciate all you do keep up the great work.
I'm soon going to start laying the foundations for my first Marathon in Belfast next May, and I'm really looking forward to this new challenge. I just ran my first half-marathon on Sunday in 2:15:50 - Slower than your Marathon average. Still, my fastest HM in training was 2:45, and before race day I thought 2:30 would've been optimistic based on how those recent 22k long runs felt. I'll be paying attention to this advice and any other advice you've given for marathon training. Thanks for the upload!
Just the perfect video for my upcoming 2nd marathon aiming at Sub4, however since it's a hilly course with 300m+ elevation if I didn't manage to break sub 4 I will just treat it as just another Sunday long run and keep on training for next marathon in 2025! Good luck to all runners aiming for new PB for upcoming marathon events. Cheers!!!
The extracting fitness from the body point near the end of the video, literally happened to me where my quads gave way, but my HR was still 165-170bpm and I wanted to push more but just couldn’t!! Definitely more leg strength training this block. And more hills!!
Love your videos Stephen. You don't sugarcoat it like a lot of others! I did my first marathon on Sunday at the age of 44 and weighing 94kg. I finished in 4'33 but aiming for sub4 in London. How do I know when I'm giving it my all? Ie, where should my heart rate be at certain stages of the race. I felt like I could have run all day on Sunday, and ran 60% in zone 2 so feel I had maybe another 10 mins in me but my goal on 1st attempt was just to finish
Regarding the struggle of some of the workouts. Sure, intervals are hard, but doing them at a run club while surrounding yourself with other enthusiasts helps a lot. For me it's those easy runs where there's a slight breeze, calves still a bit tight, elevated heart rate due to too much coffee, undulating terrain and woosh, you start asking yourself what's going on and why you aren't making any progress despite heading out 5 times a week. Idk it helps to think that the variation in daily form is bigger than the steps we take on a daily basis
Great advice as always. Got my first road mara in a few weeks (coming from an ultra trail background) and I cannot wrap my head about the workouts to show you have mara fitness. For me doing 8 x 1 mile at mara pace does not fill me with the confidence I will be ok on race day. I watched a sweat elite vid the other day where he said if you can hit 2 x 10km at mara pace as part of a long run, in a normal training week then you could think you can achieve that pace on race day. I did 2 x 6.5 miles with a 4 min float on Sunday and managed to exceed mara pace whilst staying in zone 2 and 3. Still I don't believe this means I can hold it for 26.2 miles. The mindset of a marathon runner is definitely something I need to work on
If you’ve done 8 x mile every week for 12 weeks as an example, at marathon pace, then you’re in pretty good spot. Please don’t do that tho, and follow a good plan, but also try not to do sessions to predict paces, just bank good work. When you plant vegetables, testing them all the time, to see how they’re doing won’t help the final product. Just bank good work, and be patient
Great video, I hope everything is going well with you!! I've been thinking about getting back into running and preparing for the Cluj-Napoca Marathon (which will take place exactly on my birthday next year in April). That’s where I ran my first road marathon two years ago when I aimed to finish it under 3 hours (and I managed 2 hours and 57 minutes🤯). That 2-hour 30-minute time you mentioned in the video sounds like an interesting challenge. I’m going to check out your website tonight, and I think I'll purchase the training plan. I’ve been following your channel long enough to be convinced that following one of your plans would be the best decision for me.🤙🏻🫰🏻
Do you run your long runs at MP or about 20-30 secs slower than MP? I’ve done a 20 mile long run at a goal MP and even did 25-30 secs faster than MP for my last or 20th mile… I guess I wanted to see if I can shift into a faster gear when I’m tired …

Maximum attack, bud.
I'll be there too, sub 4 is my goal...1st marathon. Good luck!
You will, so do yourself a favour and don't go out too fast
@@mikes5764 your so right ,most under rated comment that one
Training to train is brilliant.
It stroke me too. I'd buy a t-shirt with that quote on 😂.
This is one of the best running videos I've ever seen. I feel a lot better going into my marathon in 3 weeks, thank you!

That reaction on the sofa after the first sip of Ketone IQ was pure comedy 😂
In fairness ha. The taste has improved, a lot actually. Thankfully

It's just another Sunday will be my motto for Lisbon's marathon next Sunday!

All the best for Sunday mate ,I'll be joining you on that start line .we are gonna smash it 👊
@@garethmorgan2383 Best of luck mate, let’s get it done 🙌
Yet again, something else I really needed to hear! You are an amazing coach!!

Incredible advice Stephen.... this stuff is gold... thanks for all you've done for us
Going for sub 4 this November
Did it happen?

Unfortunately you need to drop a few kg
Yes, so important to remember those hard days of training tuat made you realize you’re capable of much more than you ever believed!
Been waiting for ur vid, master!
Great video, filled with insightful content! What metrics do you use to track how the body is responding to the training? HRV, RHR, or others?
Thank you once again for your insights :)
Your best video yet
Motivating ,thank you.

Soooo darn good !!! Thank u Scullion!!!
Thank you Stephen..im sub 2H40m nice advices thanks.
All good sound advice Sculley!
Thanks for that, 6 days from my local Marathon.
Funny you’re so fast that you choose 2h30 as a starting point to discuss planning and paces! 😂
There is no pace in marathon that matters, and I truly mean that.. enjoy whatever pace your body can manage. That’s the only requirement

Hi @Stephen, pls make a video on running on the toes for the track runners.
Get a pair of Vibram fivefingers
I've done 7 marathons, and i still get nervous. Going into my 8th marathon in Poznan, Poland on 13th October. Hoping to break sub-3 🤞💪

Great video Stephen.
What shoes are you wearing in the gym in this video? Are they a barefoot type shoe?
Thanks
Yes , they look like cheap ones you get on Amazon
What sort of shoes are you using for those mobility/strength gym sessions?
"Almost suffer on race day" lol that "almost" killed me @1:04
Training to be able to train! Amazing!
Correct, this ain't a hobby.
Awesome video thanks
That taste test @12:36
Do you use a triphasic model when training?
What a video ❤
Running is like meditation....you need to give some time to your body, mind to get best out of it❤️❤️
(I really like your videos sir.tnx)
Stephen - long runs at MP pace or slower?? 2.37 marathon runner, hitting the wall at 22
Do you run your long runs at MP or about 20-30 secs slower than MP?
I’ve done a 20 mile long run at a goal MP and even did 25-30 secs faster than MP for my last or 20th mile… I guess I wanted to see if I can shift into a faster gear when I’m tired …
What gym shoes are you in?
They look like the Whatarethose 12’s
They are barefoot shoes
12 Days since last video !?
Tks for your video and inspiring.. suffering during training will be paid back along the way of all 42.2Km… cheers Luigi Italian runner in SH
"Everyone's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth!" - are you sure that wasn't the Dalai Lama? 😂

Be skinny and have time to train why didn’t I think of that
