I went to a WGH Radio--sponsored show, which included Shirley Ellis. I had a front row seat, having gotten a “comp” from WGH. During her act, she leaned over the front of the stage and asked for names she could use while singing her hit record. I blurted out my on-air pseudonym “Chuck!” She smiled, and waved a scolding finger at me and said, “Naughty Boy!”.

This "version" would be known as a "stage" tape. The song was recorded on 4-track machines. So the first "Stage Tape" would consist of the tracking session. That would be the session where the music is recorded. This would include (in this particular case) drums, bass, rhythm guitar, electric guitar and I faintly hear a piano. That would then get "bounced" to a single track on a separate 4-track tape.... THIS tape.
The next session on this stage would've been the horn overdubs that we hear in the left channel. We now have TWO full tracks on our new FOUR TRACK tape. The next two sessions would consist of lead vocals and backing vocals which are heard in the center and right channels respectively. This now completes all Four Tracks of this tape.
Why does the music go on for so long? Well, generally speaking, whoever recorded the music did not have the vocalist present and they would therefore record more than necessary. This is why so many songs (like this one) end in a fade out. When the vocalist(s) complete their portion of the song, the song then just fades out.
The Stereo "Master Tape" would fade by about the 3-minute mark.
