The lead singer guitarist Justin Hayward wrote this beautiful song in 1965-66 when he was 19 or 20 years old it boggles the mind.
It's amazing what happens when there were less distractions and things pulling at kids growing up. You look at all the great musicians and song writers from the 60s and 70s who spent hours and hours just listening and playing music. Even when I was a kid in the late 80s/early 90s there were a lot more things to draw attention away. I mean, just in TV channels alone from 3 major networks in the US and most families having one tv to dozens of channels and almost 2 or more tvs in every household.
@@NasonJPR In the uk we had just 2 tv channels in black and white and no pc or mobiles/cell phones - even shared a 'party line' with a neighbour (if you picked up the receiver to dial and heard them, you'd put it back down and wait) when I was a kid . And guess what? spent my childhood and youth going out to be with my mates as much as possible. Real mates, real contact, absolutely zero false/fake so-called Facebook 'friends' and lots of real, lasting relationships. I'm aware you're talking about creative influences, but similar applied. If I had a bit of cash saved up when a teenager, loving poetry, I'd take 2 buses into town to go to a book shop's poetry section and buy a paperback. Much more space of all kinds to think individually and be creative in.
@@NasonJPR On the flip side of that coin there are a TON of young musicians out there today writing, recording, and producing their own music and putting it out there on platforms like RUclips, SoundCloud, and Spotify. So in a way, young, aspiring musicians have more opportunities to not only create but also share their art with the world without having to be “discovered” and signed by a major record company.
Sure there are a lot of kids that are distracted by things like video games and whatnot but there are some amazing bands I have discovered that I have never even heard of it weren’t for modern technology.
And no it doesn’t sound like the classic music of the 60s and 70s...but that music didn’t sound like the music that came out 40-50 years earlier either.
A great example is a band called Lake Street Dive. They were a group of musicians that met while attending the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and started gaining popularity through videos they would post on RUclips playing covers of classic songs like “I Want You Back” by the Jackson Five on the streets of Boston. That video gave them millions of views and ended up getting the attention of record labels.
If you haven’t heard of them I would HIGHLY suggest checking them out. Their Jackson 5 cover is a good place to start but they now have just released their 5th studio album. You would probably like them because they are heavily influenced by bands from the past.
Their lead singer, Rachel Price, has a timeless voice and the musicianship and backup vocals are world class. I’d recommend the songs “Mistakes,” “I Can Change,” “Rental Love,” “Good Kisser” and “Bad Self Portraits, as good starting songs. The first two I listed, Mistakes and I Can Change, have such a timeless quality I had to look up the writing credits to make sure they weren’t covers of older songs and sure enough they were all written by the band.
Anyways, sorry I kind of went on a rant their but please let me know what you think if you check out any of their music. I’ve seen them live 5 times now and they are just as good in concert as they sound in the studio. :)

Another side of the Moody Blues is, “ I’m just a singer in a rock-n-roll band.” It’s so different from this song you’ll think it’s another band.

I agree with you! IMO, the best way to listen to the first 7 albums of the Moody Blues is grab some headphones, lock your self into a room by yourself, and listen to the entire album(s) from start to finish. (A little weed wouldn't hurt, but not really necessary). I've been a fan since 1965 and have been to 4 of their concerts. Absolutely amazing.

Most def. Roger! This band is uber nostalgic for me. Especially their track “Wildest Dreams!” I so remember being a kid...whilst hearing that magical song so long ago for the 1st time! Oh to go back, if only for a little while! 💙&✌🏻

Going down the Moody Blues rabbit hole will take you places you’ve never been before. This is the last song of an album about a day in a every mans life. It starts at dawn & ends with night. Their catalog is immense, varied & spectacular. My favorite is The Story In Eyes from the album Every Good Boy Deserves Favor. You have to listen to the beginning of the album which starts Procession which fades into Story. All early Moodies albums began with an intro that led into the first song & all the songs faded into the next. Other must listens: I’m Just A Singer In A Rock and Roll band written in response to fans thinking The Moodies were prophets & could change the world. Question, The Actor, Lovely To See You another first song with an intro. Ride My See-Saw. Newer songs: I Know You’re Out There Some Where, In Your Wildest Dreams & another fave, The Voice. The first 7 albums affectionately known as The Core 7 were recorded in 5 years in the 60s-early 70s. Many fans including me consider them to be the true Moody Blues. They took a break & came back with a different sound but still incredible music. Tuesday Afternoon is from the same album as Nights and a must listen. If you want a darker, ominous song, which I adore, listen to The Other Side of Life from the album of the same name. Great video too.

The poem takes my breath away. It is so beautifully written so deep
The very first time I ever heard this song in its entirety it made me feel something I could not describe. It was mesmerizing in a way that no song has ever made me feel. I rarely listen to it. Why? Because I never want to lose that feeling. It's just so different. It's a song that hits you in your soul. A song like this is one that you listen to rarely so it doesn't become normal and lose its special something. I haven't listened to it until tonight for years. For a reason. I don't ever want it to become just another tune. That would be disrespectful to the artistry that went into t. And, ruin that special something that it stirs in the soul. I hope you and others can relate to where I'm coming from.
It is a unique composition and I've heard nothing else like it. I think many people had reactions similar to you and can relate with you.

The group was expected to do Dvorak's New World Symphony but Justin said it was a ploy for them to roll the boulder over the asylum,and let them play
wow, never heard the full version, only the radio length back in the day...so beautiful...
Jennifer, the whole album is a complete journey through a day, although the edited version was pulled out as a single this song is part of a suite where tracks segue into one another. 'Days of future past' was one of the early concept albums, the era when rock and pop grew up and became an artform rather than just 3 minute catchy pop songs to pick and mix from. The intention was just as he said, you needed to take time out to sit and chill to this music, it's not singalong background stuff, if you want to get the most out of it you find time when you won't get disturbed and layout with headphones on and absorb the atmosphere they beautifully created. They didn't use a full orchestra after this album, but with the use of a Mellotron keyboard, which created a similar but more ethereal sound, they could take their songs on the road. I'd recommend 'On the threshold of a dream' as their best album, but all of those first seven albums are brilliant, very mystical and enveloping.

Saw their first appearance in Seattle in 1967, what an AWESOME concert. We went crazy loud cheering them, screaming more, more. Singer said to us, no one has ever cheered for us ever. We don't have any more music. So we will play our show again. They did.

@@davidduxbury7530 By the Seventh Album Mike got Himself a Brand New Mellotron,the Commander 7. The used one they got from the Dunlop Mellotron Company where Pinder worked at was permanently retired.
A Simple Game Won the Ivor Norvello award in 1970. Later the Four Tops covered it too and they had a hit with it too.

Check out these Moody Blues hits: "Go Now" (their first hit), "Ride My See Saw," "Tuesday Afternoon," "Question," "The Story in Your Eyes," "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock 'n Roll Band)." The Moody Blues were one of the best groups of the '60s to emerge from the British Invasion.
"Go Now" had a different line-up, but it was my introduction to the Moody Blues, and for their first 7 albums, there wasn't an album I couldn't listen to from start to finish
@@jennd8935 only two members were different, Denny Laine and the bass player, Mike Pincer, Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge were in the band for a long time after they reformed with Justin Hayward and John Lodge.

Their early stuff are concept albums and to really get it you need to go front to back . if you do an album go with Threshold of a dream. You wont regret it Enjoy.
This song was before my time but My parents did play lot of 50's and 60's and 70's music. I just love this song it's beautiful and groovy at the same time.
The best band, along with the Beatles. They had different styles, but yet had a similar theme, especially with the later Beatles songs. They both enjoyed exploring the inner regions of the mind, as well the outer regions of the universe.

Most of their albums were concept albums. You start with song one on side one and each song flows into the next all the way to the last song.
The best way to listen to this is to have your eyes closed.
I first heard this song when my oldest brother bought the album and played it. It instantly became and still is today my favorite song as no other song makes me feel the way I do as this song does. It's amazing this song 57 years later makes people that heard it for the first time feel the same way I do even though it may not be their favorite song.

Justin Hayward wrote this when he was 17. But you should give "Tuesday Afternoon" by the band a spin.
There is no telling when I first heard this song but it had to be a few years after it came out. So around 1970 or so. Been enjoying it for many decades now, damn its good to be getting old.

Moody Blues are a great group that invokes a need to trip on shrooms and just chill. It’s from the album Days of Future Passed and you can trip on shrooms but I’ve smoked we’d and just sat back and felt the music. It’s an experience

It's a trip for sure. When the body and mind start being separated by the sound, it's OK. The Moodys will bring you back safe and sound. Like the Grateful Dead or Allman Brothers. It's all good.

My two favorite songs of all time are Nights In White Satin by The Moody Blues and Yesterday by The Beatles. I actually saw Paul McCartney twice and The Moody Blues the same week and got to see/hear my two favorite songs performed live just a few days apart from each other. It was a great week of music.
And Oh Darling is also up there as one of my favorites. You should check out some other great Moody Blues' songs including: The Story In Your Eyes, Question, New Horizons, Watching And Waiting, Melancholy Man and Ride My Seesaw and Tuesday Afternoon.

I was about 12 when I discovered this album. My aunt left it at my grandma’s house when she moved out years before (probably by mistake as it was mixed in with other records). I took it home to listen. It blew my mind. I still have that album, it’s a treasure. This song, Evening (Time to Get Away) and Tuesday Afternoon are my favorites but the album deserves to be heard in its entirety. Truly a masterpiece in every sense of the word.
