That instrument in the background is the London Festival Orchestra! He's not questioning the moon. What he's talking about is the way that moonlight changes colour - "Red is grey and yellow white." Which is right and which is an illusion? You see something that you see as red in sunlight but in moonlight it looks grey. Which is right? They are both right because the colours we see are merely reflections of particular wavelengths and who's to say that when seen in sunlight we are actually seeing the correct colour?

Nights in White Satin was written before man visited the moon. The illusion isn't the moon, it is life. The cold hearted orb sucks the color out of the world, compared to the sun. The Album, Days of Future Past is the first modern album based on a theme. You should listen to the album from beginning to end to get a better context for the song.

The song "Nights in White Satin" was written after Justin Hayward and his first girlfriend broke up. White Satin is a reference to white satin bed sheets given to Justin by his first girlfriend as a birthday gift. The song is about regret and closure. Oddly the song Your Widest Dreams focus of first love. In the song I Know You are out there somewhere." there is two scene which describe the end of the relationship.

I think the reference to the moon is just a symbol of something else, an example of the main theme, which is that reality varies; what look red and yellow during the day look gray and white, respectively, in the moonlight. In other words, our experience of life depends on our situation, experiences, and age, and point of view. Not only do we each experience life in a unique (but at the same time universal) way, but even our own lives look different to us from the time we're born until the moment we die ("Breathe deep the gathering gloom
/ Watch lights fade from every room." The idea of not knowing what's real occurs in the song lyric, too, when the narrator says, "Beauty I'd always missed, with these eyes before / Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore."
Here's the poem, called "The Lament" by Graeme Edge, drummer, and read by Mike Pinder, original keyboard player
    Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
    Another day's useless energy spent
    Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colours from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right
    And which is an illusion?
And here's a good explanation of the song's and the poem's main themes:
