- A departure from our "sporty" vehicle reviews, this week we experience the massively popular and equally tough 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser. This vehicle is in the infant stages of its overland rig build transformation (of course there will be a series for this). With prices of these machines dropping to very attainable levels, is the 100 Series Land Cruiser a good buy to transform into an overlanding rig, or is it an overrated aging SUV? #landcruiser #toyota #carreview

Awesome rig though and thanks for the review. Hope I can pick one up someday, just that gas mileage really is horrendous huh. I had an F150 got 15mpg combined max. Seems the LC may be even worse haha. But gotta love em!
K W thanks! Yeah the LC does not shine in the fuel economy area, but does just about everywhere else. Seriously, such an amazing overall rig.
Hey if you don’t mind, I’ve been shopping for a 4 runner for quite sometime now, and just recently started looking into the LCs and I’m hooked. How would you compare the LCs to the 4runners (3rd gen/4th gen mainly). Seems the LC is just better in every way- at least that’s what lot of LC owners say. I’m mainly looking to use for longer trips and hit trails whenever possible. Thanks in advance!
I own a 99 LX470 with 282k - runs like new- 3rd timing belt maintenance done/ still has oem AHC and works fine, I have maintenance records all the way back and still have the window sticker- it was 59k new in 1999!! - 3rd row removed/method wheels/BFG Ko2/rhino rack pioneer - I love this truck!!
The Big Empty _ sounds like a sweet rig that has quite a bit left in it. Maintenance is the name of the game!

I have a 98 LX470. 300k on the clock now. Super reliable. Can be very expensive to maintain....especially if the ABS pump goes out ($3500 repair). I've replaced every single bushing and hose on mine over the past 2 years at a not so insignificant cost. But, the fact that those bushings and hoses lasted 21 years and only were replaced as a precaution should be a good indicator of just how well the 100 Series was constructed. As for weight, these things can get HEAVY fast. Mine tips the scales at over 7000lbs when fully outfitted for expeditions (bullbar, winch, dual battery system, 1/4" steel underbody skid plates, 40 gallon long range reserve tank, rear dual swingout bumper, sliders, Gamiviti roof rack, drawer system, 54liter fridge and much more). I had to upgrade the brakes to DBA rotors and pads to handle the increased weight. Fuel economy is laughably bad.....10.4mpg highway for me and 9.1mpg when towing my small off-road camping trailer. Both of my uncles own GenV T4R TRD Pros, my father has a 2018 T4R Trail and my best friend has a 2015 T4R Limited. All of them have stated that my 98 LX rides better and quieter than theirs and feels more like a tank than a truck. I'm inclined to agree with them. Mine has been on 4 continents and gone thru some of the worst terrain imaginable along with being daily driven. It is triple locked and can climb up and/or through just about anything. It has never once let me down in over 150k miles of ownership. The major limitations of the 100 Series platform are the lack of "flex" (VERY easy to lift wheels articulating), weak front differential (2 pinion in the first 3 years, 4 pinion on later models.....known for breaking when front wheel gets airborne, is spinning and then contacts ground), several expensive maintenance items. But, in the end, the limitations can be addressed relatively easily and likelihood of even the expensive maintenance items failing is fairly low.
Gary Eanes sounds like one heck of a rig. I agree that weight can get up there quickly, but is a fair trade for the extra space and ride quality that is difficult to match with other off-roaders. Your rig sounds just like what I want my end project to be.
That's what's scared me a bit. I'm picking up a 99 this weekend. I'm kind of wishing I'd of went atrac with a beefier front suspension, but I don't plan on wheeling it too hard or anything. Mainly beach sand, dirt, and mud here in Florida.

2002 with over 305k on mine, plan to drive it another 5 years+. They are incredibly well engineered and built vehicles. Everytime I think about replacing it, the only thing that wouldn't be a let down would be another Landcruiser. Plan to start over landing with it this year.

@@autoobsessivegarage Update, I've since lifted it 2" with new springs and torsion bars, installed a hidden winch, put 33" A/Ts, upgraded roof rack, added rock sliders, and installed diff locks in front and rear. I didn't think I could love my LC anymore, now I can't imagine getting anything else.
Mine is a 99 with a 134.000miles paid 8550 and barely broken in 😀

Bro that is a steal, I felt really good about only paying 5750 for my ‘99 and it has 271k on it. It runs smooth and has plenty of life left in it though

I like the video and LOVE those mods. A friend has a '00 Land Cruiser with 270k miles and obsessive service records since new. It's in amazing shape. Texan truck. Would you have concerns? Thinking of selling my very uninteresting '12 Outback to get it. I'd appreciate your quick thoughts?
Mark Levy mileage doesn’t scare me too much on these vehicles, I would ensure service records reflect the big items like timing belt and water pump being recently replaced. Price is obviously a major factor too, hopefully your friend is offering it to you at a good cost. Sounds like it may become your daily replacing the Outback. I find the interior much higher quality and comfort level than Subaru’s. Of course give it a good test drive and solid inspection, but I wouldn’t have any concerns if everything checks out.

We're gonna swap cars for a couple of days this week so I can drive it and see what I think (and, more importantly, my wife thinks--she just doesn't really like the Outback, even more than me).

Mahfoudh Al Naamani I’m a fan of having camber adjustability whenever you modify the suspension. Allows you to really dial in the alignment and prevent I ever tire wear.
After about 2.5”.
Starting in 2000 all 100 series were equipped with a center diff lock. The rear locker was removed.
correction: all 100 series (98-07) had the center lock. Only 98-99 had the rear locker, '00+ had ATRAC

@@PaulMcCabe Depends on how you wheel, ATRAC might be helpful to the less experienced, but it also comes at the cost of an expensive computer that could fail and leave you with two open diffs. The locker (98-99) is an awesome simple mechanical motor that doesn't fail often and the actuator is not expensive to maintain/ fix. The downside is the open front diff on those earlier 100s, but that can be remedied with an ARB air locker. To each their own, but I'd rather have a mechanical locker than a computer
@@nikolaisaint9137 That’s an interesting way to look at it. I’ve owned a Range Rover classic with no lockers or traction, then the disco 2 with traction which amazed me as it just did what I asked & a L322 but I’ve not really taken that off road. I’ve now also got a Landcruiser 95 Colorado (Prado) that has rear diff lock. I’ve yet to try this out but I’m also looking at getting a 100 series & wondering, ATRAC or rear locker. I’d say I’m experienced in off road driving over the years here in the U.K. but not much technical driving but more mud plugging if you know what I mean.
I really want one of these but I’m In a weird spot where my f150 is still running well and I imagine I’ll get a few more years out of it. To the point where it’s going to be really hard to find a well maintained low mileage 100 after. I’m at 215k right now and doing 20 a year so imagine I’ll be looking for another truck in say 4 ish years.
Yeah that’s a tough spot as the 100 Series are climbing in value (and mileage). I’d say, if even possible, be ready to move on one if you see a deal you just can’t pass up. It’s hard to land whatever car your seeking in alignment with any schedule. I kick myself for every good deal I’ve ever passed up haha.

Can't remember the offset, but they are Method 17" wheels.

Looks like you need to adjust those torsion bars up in the front just a tad
Kade Nicholson agreed, the front does appear lower than the rear, but there is a great deal more weight over the front with the ARB bumper and Warn winch. I was going to wait until after installing a swing out rear bumper before making any adjustments.
auto obsessive garage fair enough i have been running my 100 with just a ARB front and big winch for a few months now and I still like to keep them within a half an inch normally 23 from the hub cap to the fender in the rear and 22.5 in the front

You are wrong about 1998 not having the 4.7 litre V8. 1997 was the last year for the in line 6. 1998 was the first year for the 100 series and the first year for the 4.7 litre V8.
