Reading comments below, most people don't understand what she is saying. She brings out a great point about the weakness of BITO, the rolling over to higher prices futures contracts. That will not be as bad if actual Bitcoin prices are going up, even it will decrease the total return compared to owning the actual Bitcoin, minus storage/security expenses. However, she is confused about the term contango vs normal future curve, and she should not be using the term contango. Rising future expected spot prices reflected in a rising future curve is a normal future curve, not a contango. A contango is a rising future curve above the respective expected future spot prices. She is not alone; many people use the term contango incorrectly.
Anyone else feel really dumb after reading this comment? Just when I thought I was getting my head around the markets, this comment humbled me in the 5 minutes it took me to read, read, and re-read it.
Hell im confused too! Bottomline ,i believe the OP (original poster) disagree with the use word contango in her context throughout the interview, thats my simple take
What she is saying makes no sense your supposed to use futures to hedge you posistion in spot. So the majority who use futures more than likely hold btc anyway.
futures are traditionally used to hedge, yeah, but people in crypto often use perpetual futures simply to profit off leveraged longs and shorts. Especially by those with low capital.
What’s the fuzz? BITO isn’t the first ETF pegged to a futures contract, and people have no problem trading those. Also when you consider the crazy spreads on the spot market plus the fees that are as high as 1% of purchase price round trip(and that’s on trading exchanges, fees can be even higher on other platforms), plus the fees to transfer crypto in and out of exchanges and wallets... I think BITO is fine for me, the spread on it is just $.01 as it started trading.

Good for Canada but it is not convenience for US residents to own that ETF: transaction fees and currency risk. There is no ADR in the US for that ETF you mentioned.
I’m not a Bitcoin bull, but the whole thesis runs contrary to owning an ETF vs buying actual Bitcoin. You’re either buying Bitcoin because it’s the future of money in which case you want the actual money. If you believe in decentralized finance then ETFs are hardly decentralized. or you’re buying it because you have no faith in the dollar, in which case if the dollar goes to hell and we’re living in a Mad Max post apocalyptic hellscape that would ensue and your ETF would be useless versus having a hardware wallet with actual Bitcoin (same goes for gold btw)
Yeah, you're just missing the point of BTC/crypto in general lmao... You realize crytpo tech offers way more than just "an alternate to the dollar" right??? Also, it's not that it even needs to replace the dollar in a mad max setting - what a dumb thing to say... There's actually plenty of room for them to co-exist and the threat that a realistic alternate global currency that is decentralized and controlled by the people is what will keep countries in check and make sure they tread carefully with what they do with their currencies. There's a very real opportunity for BTC to become mainstream and not replace the dollar. Where it does have a real chance to replace country's currencies is in 3rd world countries where they basically are already living in a financial/banking version of mad max. BTC will never actually replace the US dollar or any major country's currency and I'm not sure anybody, except maybe a small few borderline conspiracy theory nuts, actually think that will happen.
It's certainly not ideal. Remember when oil futures went negative last year due to some temporary weirdness and an ETF based on those contracts basically got wiped out? It is better than nothing, though, and if these futures-based ETFs become popular, arbitrage trading in the futures market will somewhat reduce the costs.
The only reason the futures are trading above spot is that interest rates are positive. The futures obey the relationship F = S (1+r)^t where r is the interest rate, S is the bitcoin spot price, t is time to maturity of the futures. Since interest rates are low the futures will trade marginally above the spot. This is true if you look at the prices. The BITO should make up the difference by investing the balance of the ETF holder's cash in an interest baring instrument. Thus, a position in BITO should never lose money relative to a cash position in Bitcoin. Gunzberg simply doesn't know what she is talking about.

Futures are usually contango, simplistic to say you are always paying higher the next contract, who cares. You made your profit in the first month and pay higher next month, still being ahead. Overall this as most have said brings more legitimacy to this market.
BITO pays dividends (income) plus some capital growth - if you come in at a good price. Bitcoin will go up over time and BITO is right behind it paying monthly dividends and a little capital growth.
It's a MIRACLE, Gunzberg is an honest, unbiased voice in the crypto space filled with con artists and commercial interests constantly trying to bolster the price via new traders. I would go one step further and say this most recent ETF product is very likely the final card atop a very fragile house of cards long overdue for a devastating re-valuation. Let's see what happens this week. The recent pump due to the ETF hype IMO is the last try for BTC to maintain the $60K level.
