I am very grateful for your video. It has helped me a lot. Not even the tutors were able to help me with this. I gave up for three years and finally decided to check online for help. Thanks to you I'll resume my quilting. I just tried all what you explained and my machine works wonderfully. And I thought I didn't have a good machine. Thank you, Thank you ,thank you!
Helen you are just amazing!! I've read and seen lots of posts, info, vids etc on tension over the years but your use of "his muscles" is just brilliant! Thank you. I've day I dream too meet you and do a class with you.

Tension is a very tricky thing to get the knack of as it can make the machine make really weird noises that makes you think your breaking the machine., I've broke the needle through the material all crunching up....so I keep watching these videos looking for my particular machine.

Appreciate the demo on how tight the bobbin casing should be for free motion quilting. I have a singer L500, which has a metal bobbin casing like the one you showed. I have a problem when I use a 60 weight thread in bobbin though. The thread somehow gets wrapped around the pin the bobbin sits on underneath the machine and breaks when I try to quilt. I cannot figure why. I don’t have this problem with other thread weights. I was wondering if you might have an idea of what’s causing it and how the fix it. I have rethreaded it numerous times to no avail. Thanks in advance.
The reason a thread wraps around the spindle is 2 reasons. if the bobbin is over full the thread can slide off and wrap. The other reason is the thread is light weight and the bobbin gets up so much speed whilst stitching and then when you stop sewing, it has so much momentum it keeps spinning and it gets back lash and the bobbin continues to spin inside the bobbin case. You need to ask a sewing machine shop for some back lash springs or "genie washers" suitable for your bobbin case size.
@@HelenGoddenQuilts That makes a lot sense! I will look into the the washers and see if that will help. And I will try a partially filled bobbin also. Thank you for your quick response and insights!

I love your video it's still hard to get the correct tension. I have Avante and I was quilting today and the top stitch was beautiful and turned the quilt in the bottom stitches were flat, I try to adjust the top tension and was not able to get a good stitch on the bottom had a lot to pull out today. Will try again tomorrow.

Hi Helen, you are an amazing and naturally gifted teacher! I think you quilting skills are absolutely superb! You have the ability to explain the mysteries of fmq in a way that makes us believe we can do it too! I'd like to thank you for being so generous with all the information that you share with us. I'm wondering if you have any tips on basic fmq designs or techniques that would be be useful for a beginner to practice? There are so many beautiful patterns in your quilts and I'd love to try your BOM painted blocks but my quilting would be embarassing! Thanks again, H
She is a gifted teacher isn't she? Some people just have the knack of imparting knowledge so it's clearly understood. And now it makes so much sense! Once you have the understanding of how things work?
Thank you that has helped me. I also am having what I call "skipping stitches" the go really long then several correct then really long. I have no clue!! lol
Great Tutorial......Love my SS16. Just purchased the adjustable couching feet and I'm looking at videos on how to put it on my machine; looks a little difficult so wish me luck !
I love this tutorial and thank you so much. The problem I'm having is that my bobbin tension is fine, but I have tightened my top tension as far as it will go and I am still seeing the top thread being pulled through to the back. Any suggestions?
Sorry for the delayed response. Only just found these questions here. Sounds like your p thread was not flossed between the disc ms properly. I sure hope you worked that out yourself before now! Lol
Great tutorial. I love the HQ videos, they are so easy to understand. One question, are you testing the tension right on the edge of the quilt sandwich(batting and backing)? We have been using little fake sandwiches but they are so hard to hold on to.
I have this machine Juki DDL-555. I'm having a problem with it. The stitching changing nob is lose and when I stitch it doesn't stitch properly. Two stitches come normally and the third one is bigger then the normal stitch size. How can I fix it?
The theory in Tension video applies to all machines. Even those with supposedly auto tension. Just over ride it. Your machine can not know all the variations we throw at it.

Great tutorial. I love the HQ videos, they are so easy to understand. One question, are you testing the tension right on the edge of the quilt sandwich(batting and backing)? We have been using little fake sandwiches but they are so hard to hold on to.
As long as it is tested through all three layers, whether you use the edge or a sample - it must be similar batting.
I am sewing thru thick layers, getting bird nesting from top thread. What tension do I use for thick layers?
Is the bird nesting on top or bottom of quilt. If on bottom, your top thread has skipped the tension path. re thread and watch my video again. cheers
