- Flite Test - Hangar 9 P-51 Mustang MkII PTS - REVIEW
In this episode of Flite Test, Josh and Josh review our first nitro powered plane form Horizon Hobby! This P-51 Mustang not only sounds amazing with it's nitro motor, but it's a great trainer that can grow with you! Watch this episode to see more! Развлечения
Hi there, great video. I bought this plane in 2011 and I'm still flying it. I took out the evolution engine and replaced it with an OS 55 ax. I also replaced the prop with a two blade and I got rid of the nacca drops on the wings. This plane is really strongly built and mine still looks good after all these years.
This is just the best rc channel there is!
He said "It looks pretty good comming in." But just imagine in that plane's time it would have been a terrifying sight to have one of those comming at you gun a-blazing!! Looks fun. Great review.
I love the old intro so much! They both look so young!
the P-51 Mustang you have there is modeled after the Tuskegee airman P-51 with a red tail and nose
this plane would be so much more better with retractable landing gear
Mein Kampf you can customize it
Mein Kampf but this is a wwII plan sum of them don't have it like this kind
Can you cut off the modification on the wing
awesome possum they did have retracts
Yes, the droops come off. As far as the retracts, you can get the wings with the built in retracts and they bolt right on.
Ahhh the good old days....
These shows are really well done. Thanks guys (and crew) & keep up the good work.
One tip! Those planes like an "American" landing where you first touch the two main wheels, and then cut the throttle. The plane needs to be piloted till the end, when the speed is low and the tail wheel touches the ground on its own.
Approach with a 30-40° attack angle and just pull last second to flatten it. Other than that the P51 is probably the best warbird to use as a trainer! Great choice
I enjoyed this episode a lot! This is a great product worthy of a Flitetest review. I know we all are going through a recession but reviewing only cheap things makes it hard to keep it interesting for the viewers. Good work! Keep it up like that!
Cheers to HH for letting these guys review your planes! makes it so much more interesting!
Well done once again guys! Josh may not realize how lucky he is. Some of us have been in the hobby for 3 years and still haven't had the opportunity to fly a glow plane!
I bought this plane years and years ago and I think that searches on here was how I found your channel, and this was a new video then. I have since built countless FT planes and have still YET to fly this one. I'm scared to, it's so nice. See you at FFT next month! :D
i loved this plane when it first came out .. always wanted to get one . i might just try it , after these years its still getting reviews , great looking plane !
Fuel is life. Need more of them on the channel.
Wow old video! I bought this Mustang 10 years ago and I'm still flying it now and then. Still looks like new, its been a great plane.
Landing was beautiful!! good job guys for bringing war birds in the show!!
waiting for the new flite test episode all day :)
Glad to see a glow engine in the show!!
love both, glow and electric, electric great when you onli have little time to go flying and dont want to spend too much time with glow stuff,on the other hand glow sound and mess has its own and unique feeling!
great show!!
Enjoying it from soutrh america
This plane is Rock Solid. I changed my prop to a 11 7 and it was just insane.
Very good flite test!!!
fantastic review guys.
My son (6) and I love our .40 Midwest Nitro trainer.
these are great models. I taught my brother in law to fly on one. it went on to teach him his bronze wings pattern and aerobatics...
People fly trainers 2 kms from my old house and you could hear them. Love the sound of trainers
i bought this plane, IT IS AWESOME. it is my first plane. I spent hours a week on the simulator, and jumped straight onto this. it flies great, cant fault it. the reason they recomend evoloution glow plugs is that they are longer threaded glow plug. but will run on a slightly shorter plug.
That's a really nice plane. I have red a few reviews on the plane viva the internet. Thanks for the review.
I fly a 1/12th Scale P-51 Mustang. The plane is designed for a .15 but for Combat I have a .25 DBL BB in mine. Full power is almost never needed, a light underhanded level toss at 50% power is all that is needed for a smooth take-off.
I got my first nitro plane in 1959, built and flew them until 1976 when I got my first 5 channel Radio, been flying R/C ever since.
Best landing in ages! :)
I miss these types of episodes
i love the hangar 9 p-51 i have had mine fr about 3 years now. and i must say it fyls really ssporty with the flaps down those wing things offf and those thing on the landing gear off. i love it.
dang man that is crazy awesome
i like this idea! i just flew my first glow plane!
I like nitro !!!
Great video!!!
can't wait to have the skill to fly my 60 p51 =)
might get this one to train for it!!
Very cool guys, thanks to Horizon Hobby again :-)
High-end rc planes fly soooo much better!! Great vid guys!
VERY VERY NICE LANDING!!
happy new year!!!!
We need more more vids like these
Glad to see you guys demonstrating Nitro/glow planes. Gassers next?? :)
Those extensions on the leading edge are awesome. You really dont see them either, until you mentioned it I had no idea they were there.
Thanks for reviewing a nitro boys
They are similar, but the glowplug is actually needed to keep the engine running. There is a catalytic reaction between the methanol in the nitro and the platinum in the coil of the plug. This keeps the plug so hot it glows, just like when you test a plug :)
I bought one, I've already installed flaps and set them up with 3 positions. I'm looking forward to the maiden :)
Cool! Finally some quality planes.
Now I will really be impressed if you review the H9 Twin Otter!
Great videos guys!!! Can you recommend a camera for FPV filming?
Really Nice!
I got a Flite test ad on a Flite test video.
This is my most favorite plane
EndermenForces Gamez me too :)
Nice landings
Fantastic🤩
@ Toose70, considering that the plane only cost ~$399.00(US) and comes RTF including a .40 sized glow engine AND a Dx6i radio($200 by itself) the fact that it has flaps at all is surprizing. Adding the extra servos for the flaps yourself only cost ~$25 and an hour or less of your time where it would probably add $50 to the kit if they were installed at the factory.
For those wanting a similar sized (and skill lvl) balsa plane but not interested in Glow, check out the E-Flight T-34 PTS.
I agree 2 months is to soon. I personally have crashed two planes so far eventually it happens. Been flying for about a year now on and off field. The two planes were Switch, a couple switches got knocked on my transmitter and it reversed the right and left aeilorons next was the flyzone corsair on take off it flipped over broke off the nose bent the motor mount. Will have to straighten or buy new mount 7 bucks only just not in stock yet from horizon. nice videos as usuall thanks.
Thats a nice looking plane with a great training idea. I would want that for my first plane.
No a gas/nitro plane never get a 4channel or nitro plane for first plane
I see it the other way, if you can fly nitro, than you can fly electric too. we only had nitro trainers when i learned to fly, sometimes also with no throttle control.
+Michael A. I learned on a kadet LT40
mine was a midwest aerostar 40
Man, you guys need to do more nitro and gasoline content. The electric stuff is nice but there's just something special about hearing an actual engine that you do not get from electric.
I have 8cc p51 with safe it's so awesome I recommend this for anyone who can fly apprentice
i have one for a couple of years now. i put a tower hobbies .61 on it with a 11x7 and on gps flying flat to not cheat it gps speeds at 117mph. i love this plane. (the engine did not just fit though. i think the os 52 does fit.
You guys should do some more glow planes on the show. I have a gen 1 pts mustang with a four stroke and movable flaps. It's easily one of my favorite planes to fly. I think a lot of electric flyers would be surprised at how docile a 40-60size glow plane can be when it's set up right.
finally a quality glow plane!
Nitro isn't dead!
It will never be! WE SHALL NOT LET THAT HAPPEN!
Saw a few guys at the field with Nitro. Expensive but that’s how they liked it. Nice to know there is old and new flying altogether.
I go to toledo and get a crate of ritches brew right from ritch each year. 4 gallons and I only use 1.5 a year
Seth'sChopShop bud. Nitro the last I checked is $80 per gallon of gas. The planes aren’t necessarily expensive but the nitro compared to Gas is expensive. I’ve been flying for 7 years. I’m still learning but to say I know nothing is a bit of a stretch.
@@Brian_Christensen07RC what the hell are you talking about? I pay LESS THAN 80 A CASE!! That's 4 gallons!
I see your point and your definition is correct, for the most part but, not ALL slats have slots. There can be many variations. In fact a slat is any protrusion from the leading edge of a wing that increases the radius and reface area of the wing. The can come out and down or just hinge down and have or not have a slot or gap. The one on all the PTS trainers is fixed and made that way to be easily removed but have the same effect of increasing the area of the wing and creating drag.
BTY...they are called leading edge SLATS. Nice job.
Amazing video!! wish i has the space for nitro but there really isnt that much space where i am. as for your in video question, the plastic parts on the outboard section of the leading edge is basically a leading edge flap (yes there is such a thing). they aren't slats because they do not have a air passage way between the leading edge and the plastic piece.
i know this is old but u should ALWAYS pick the nose up to check for a lean/rich condition. hate to loose a plane on 1st steep climb!
The training thingys are called wing snoods.
Snoods, that’s an amazing word to say, just say, “snooooooooooooooooooooooooods”
He looked so much younger
I would call an Tower Hobbies Uproar a good first nitro airplane. They handle extremely well. Landings and take offs are slow and short. Basically they fly like most foamies.
Ah the sound of Nitro in the morning!!!
praise the sun!
Guys, the things on the leading edges are called NASA droops. They are a NASA's development from the late 70's and work by augmentating the wing tip's cord length. This avoids the sudden loss of lift at the wing tip when the wing is set in an angle beyond it's best angle of attack; ergo, they make the whole wing stall evenly and extremely docile. Greetings from Mexico City!
4:19 CX2! Is Josh Scott going to fly it?
I think this is my favorite episode! Oh, and is anyone else the "306th" viewer?
I always saw this plane online and wanted one. I had the eflite p51 and it was a blast to fly. Then my friend had one that he bbought and was still in a box for 3 years. Cant get him to sell it
Looked like the engine was primed by flipping the engine over backwards. I could be wrong, just appeared that way. I been flying since the 80's and never knew that was possible lol. Doesn't seem like it would pull the fuel. We always flipped the engine over counter clockwise .
I think the wing modification is called NASA drop which helps preventing the tips of the wing from stalling before the root of the wing
you should have Josh S build his own foamie! Great video anyways though!
My dad got this plane for his birthday, but he has never really flown RC planes and is too afraid to take it up. To this day, it hasn't even turned on... But he got it like 6 or 7 years ago and the top doesn't pop off like that. Another slower characteristic it has it that there are two panels in front of the landing gears. They are like doors, but they are on the front to make it slower. Also it comes with some other 5-channel remote that's 72mhz. He said his plane was $700 when he got it :0.
great video, could you please do a review on messerscmitt bf 109 by dynam, thanks
@greenrolaids ...you are so insightful, and we've never met, but you are really good at readin my eyes! Please don't tell Chad I don't want to do the show anymore ;)
Do a review on the Hangar 9 pawnee! (the smaller one)
THANKS! you are now getting quality planes... not the cheap ones from hobbyking.... Please do a review on the piper cub 46 by hangar 9 or the pawnee.... I have those and they fly GREAT! But get the OS engine... Evolution doesnt last very long...
My first plane was a Glow Avistar
@jinsvi
I have to dissagree. The Slat is a high-lift device that's separated from the wing by a small gap called Slot (Slat and Slot always go togheter). It can be protruded out of the wing's leading edge automatically, like on the Me 109, or be fixed like on the Fi 156 Storch or the Me 163. The NASA droop, which is what this model has is basically an enlargement of the wing's cord. It doesn't have a gap or slot. It's an integral part of the wing. (Andy Lennon's Model aircraft design page 73)
The 8cc from HH is not junk it's good plane. My buddy just got his and it's a big plane bigger than the BNF P51 and looks nice. Runs on pump gas balsa and plywood construction with SAFE®. all ya need is gas and 6 channel transmitter. If you buy a pump to put into your gas can or what ever you use make sure get one with the right hoses so the gas don't eat it. This plane don't have flaps.
Finaly a glow one!
after every reference josh scott said... HE GETS THE SPONGEBOB ONE!!!
Indeed cool episode,,, Praise THE son niceeeeee see ya
Please do a review on how to use nitro engines, where to get fuel, glow plugs, and just how they work in general, I wanna get into nitro airplanes, but it seems a little counfusing, thanks.
roll upside down and pull up until level without hitting ground is how i was told
I also have this plane and had an extra set of electric retracts and thought about installing them. However, it requires quit a bit of modifying to fit them but the bigger issue is that it will drastically effect your CG. Im sure you know a warbird with a bad CG almost guarantees a crash. Retracts would make this plane look much sleeker but the bottom line is, not really worth the changes to the wing/CG.....just my opinion.
9:28 wow, that sounds very much like the movies
WOOOO IC!!!!!
You need to put a 2-bladed propeller, and raise those flaps.the flaps is just going to make it stall in harsh wind conditions.and take of the droops.
Hiya... excellent video... I've watched alot of your new videos and noticed that you only fly electric motors, so decided to go back and look at your old videos to see if you flew any glo engine models and found this video. Why do you only fly electric now and not glo engines... It would be good to see you fly more glo engine models.
if youre looking to start in the hobby on nitro, the engine is always intimidating which can highly affect if you crash or not.
the leading edge thingies are called slats, btw
can you guys make a full review of Hobby King P-51D Mustang Plug-n-Fly ?
He is flying it about three mistakes high. Its a nice airplane.
Hey FliteTest, love the videos. I am a full scale private pilot so I am very familiar with aviation and the little details. I am wanting to get into RC flying and was looking at both the Apprentice and this P-51. I know both are about the same cost, but i like that the P-51 comes with the Dx6. Would the P-51 be able to get me started like the Apprentice would? I do prefer to fly glow/gas, but would not rule out electric. Thanks for any input!
I actually just ordered the apprentice. I think that will be a safer bet for me. Thanks for all the vids! Make some glow/gas reviews to help me decide on what glow/gas plane too! haha
For landing you should land on the grass it slows the plane down so it doesn't run off
