Sondheim's shuffle off this mortal coil has the same impact as the deaths of Fred Astaire (1987) and Frank Sinatra (1998). I guess we will move on but something won't be the same, in the air, water, or words we search for to describe the crosscurrents of our lives. Anyone should be happy to have lived in the Sondheim century. I know I am.

When I first saw "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" - I was mesmerized by the "dot" painting they showed during their trip to the museum. I ran to the nearest bookstore to look it up. I could not believe someone could create such beauty from mere dots. Then I was able to see Seurat's creation come to life in the musical "Sunday in the Park with George" - my ALL TIME favorite Sondheim creation, and performance by Bernadette Peters - the princess of Broadway. There is NOTHING like live theater..... something human kind should be very proud of.....

It's this song that ends the first act of Sunday in the Park with George. The final touches are put on the painting. Partly painted figures and scenery and partly live elements (characters who appear in the show). The artist moves the live characters to the exact right spot giving them an item or taking one away until everything and everyone is in the right place. As the song ends and a scrim (you can see through it when the scene behind is lit) descends, the lighting is perfected and the audience sees the completed masterpiece as the last two notes are played by the orchestra. It is magnificent and one of the most uplifting experiences in Broadway history. Stephen Sondheim will always live through his music, the lyrics and the new productions that will continue to move generations to come. Sondheim forever!

These wonderful men and women are in great historical company. When the towering musical genius Giuseppe Verdi died in Milan in 1901 -- a national god in Italy -- hundreds and hundreds of Milanese men and women gathered in the city center on their own initiative, and spontaneously began to sing the chorus of exiled Jews from Verdi's first great opera "Nabucco", "Va, pensiero, sur ali dorate" ("Go, thought, on golden wings"): the commission that had brought him back to musical composition, when he was about to completely give up music in despair sixty years earlier, following the death of his beloved wife. When a great artist can bring his devotees into the street, to honor his memory in song, he is definitely among the Immortals. Rest in peace, beloved Steve. As Carlotta Campion sings in "Follies": you're still here.
