- Review: Martell 'Blue Swift'
Martell is an old established Cognac house that produces great cognacs. In particular, I really am fond of their Cordon Bleu and VSOP.
'Blue Swift' was released in April 2018 and is a bit of a departure for Martell because it is not technically a cognac. While it is made up of VSOP cognacs, those cognacs are aged further for 2 to 6 months in ex-bourbon casks. By French law, all eau-de-vie making up cognac must only be aged in French oak. So, the Blue Swift is not cognac and we will notice on the label they call it a 'spirit drink'.
It's 40% alcohol by volume and has no age statement but since it is made up exclusively of VSOP cognacs, we know the youngest age is four years.
Check out the video for my review.
Cheers!

Bottle is half gone and he's faded. My kinda drinker
Lol!
Not the glowing review I was expecting. I love the honesty and the fact that you review a variety of spirits. Cheers!
As much as I like Martell VSOP as well as the Cordon Bleu, I just can't say I like the Blue Swift.
Thanks for watching and have a great weekend!
I love Martell blue swift 💙
Enjoy in good health!
It's Not bad at 40 bucks Costco.
I say give it a whirl folks.
$40? Sure. Unfortunately, in Canada its $100 and so no way north of the border. Thanks for commenting!
I just bought a 375ml bottle today (Feb. 5, 2022) and find it to be really quite good for the $23.00 I paid here in Texas. Bought it mostly on a whim, as cognac isn't something I drink very often. I don't get the overwhelming oaky flavor you found, just some nice raisin notes along with moderate vanilla and spice. Considering that it's 4-year old spirit, it has pretty good complexity without anything offensive. The nose and finish aren't too remarkable, but again, nothing to complain about for the price. Usually, your impressions are pretty close to mine, so I wonder if this might be worth re-reviewing on your part - maybe Martell has improved how they make Blue Swift?
I do this promo twice in November! Excited! Great informative video. Thanks!
That’s an honest to goodness review. I just thought of having one but I now have second thought. Thanks 👍👍👍
I get it for $45-50 USD in Texas. I don't think it's bad for that price, but the bourbon cask flavor is definitely a bit strong. I wouldn't call it "chemical" but you can certainly taste the char barrel, and it overpowers the subtleties in a nice cognac.
Thanks for the honest review
I respect but beg to differ on your assessment sir. This drink is an incredibly smooth and sweet sipper. The fact that it is finished in bourbon casks just adds even more complexity to the finish. Cheers
A lot of rum fans like the wood management, but for me just too much. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
💯 agree with you, I bought this from Costco in USA Wa , not bad, but definitely not cognac !
Thanks for the honest review. I do tend to like ex bourbon cask finish but I can see it accenting a cognac like you stated. Have your reviewed calvados? would like to know your take on them.
Blue Swift is an example of how finishing in a non-traditional cask can produce an unpleasant result. I think the time in ex-bourbon casks was only a couple of months, but whatever, it tastes too much of vanilla, oak and pine needles. There is this synthetic quality (akin to burnt plastic) to the caramel flavour that makes one think this stuff is proof of the danger of using too much distiller's color (E150a). I really like Martell's other offerings but this stuff is to be avoided. Maybe in their next production run they will change things, I dunno, but at this point would avoid.
As for calvados, no, haven't had any recently. Will see what I can do.
Thanks for commenting!
Should i buy it or Noblige or VSOP red barrels , and please tell me whats difference between then . Many thanks
I picked up a Martell Cordon Bleu last year on clearance at the LCBO and it is dangerously drinkable but so rich, I could only handle 1 pour a week. Nice to know I will be avoiding this one.
Blue Swift is as ugly as Cordon Bleu is beautiful.
Jason Debly thanks for the warning
W P I sampled the Blue Swift again last night and it is no better. The taste of caramel has melted plastic note. Just dreadful.
Thank you for this! Might try this one
I dunno, I am not a fan, but I am sure it would work great as the base ingredient of a cocktail.
Have a great weekend!
Wow thank you. Great review and very honest. I purchased this bottle and I agree it has a very chemical taste and smell when you first open. However the longer it sits the better it tastes.
Glad you can get some pleasure from it. I was not a fan on this one given the price point.
Take care!
@@JasonDebly Hello Jason ! I 100% agree with you on this one. Blue Swift is suitable for passing around at a campfire or guzzling down after a global nuclear exchange. On another note, please try Cordon Bleu Extra (not the normal Cordon Bleu), its a version of Cordon Bleu that uses much older cognacs in its blend. Its fantastic. Cheers !
Thank you, Jason. Found your review after having bought Blue Swift and wondered how others found it. What cognac would you recommend to someone with a fondness for sweetness (as opposed to bite). New to cognac, had to give up whiskey for its uric acid problems.
Hennessy! Hennessy VSOP in particular. If too expensive, the VS is fine also.
@@JasonDebly Thank you, I will try both. Now subscribed. Though I actually liked the Blue Swift to a degree (being a cognac virgin and not having any reference point really), I think cognac is my new drink. Liked your review of the Hine as well. Thanks.
I got this one as my first "cognac", made the research half hassed, i knew which brand to get but not which product, oh well next time imma get a real one, can you recommend a cogbac for a newbie like me? Thank you for the video.
I have never had Cognac of any kind but may have to try some sometime...Cheers
If you wanna try a good intro to cognac I would start with Hennessy VS. Nice stuff!
Thanks for commenting. Have a great weekend!
I'm a huge fan of the Martell VSOP Medallion, but the Class Six only carries Blue Swift now. 3 words ...pales in comparison. This review is spot on. There's just something off about it.
Thanks for the input. Appreciate it!
Absolutely right! Picked this one recently at Costco. I always had the VSOP Medaillon, which I absolutely love and better than Hennessy VSOP or Remy Martin etc. luckily it was under $40 so was okay to get rid of this as cocktails. I love Bourbons too and Single Malts and good Blended Scotch , but something that’s none of this is a shame.
I love this bottle
This is my daily drink and by far one of the top 2 spirits from Martell.
Great review. Thanks! Off topic.. I like the watch winder in the background. What watches are in there if you don’t mind answering? 😃🥃⌚️
I am into Seiko divers, Orient automatics, Seiko Alpinist and currently eying an Oris Aquis in blue but not cheap I am sure as you very well know.
I love my SKX007 & 009. Great looking diver watches.
@@everman75 I used to have an orange Sumo and a Japanese domestic market seiko diver but sold them , and do regret that.
I disagree on the unbalanced comment. My top choice for a laid back night or to get fired up in the club.
Welcome to the channel and thanks for commenting!
How did you get apple pie 🥧?
I have to say, I concur. I love my cognacs, and really hoped that this would at least match the sippability of a V.S.O.P. But, it didn’t and I found the spirit a bit cloying. That vanilla stayed long after it should have.
Thanks for commenting! I and other viewers appreciate it.
I see The Last Lion. When you reviewed Remy Martin XO, you also quoted Winston Churchill, "eating own words is a healthy diet". You must be a Winston Churchill fan. Just like me. lol
I certainly am a Winston Churchill fan! One of my favorite quotes of his is:
"You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks."
Thank you for reviewing this. I’ve been intrigued by it since finding out about it, but it’s hard to find around here, so I didn’t pursue it. I’m honestly not surprised by your negative review. A few years ago, I tried Copper and Kings American brandy aged partly in Bourbon barrels, and it had the same problem: overbearing Bourbon barrel influence. Meanwhile, Christian Bros. Sacred Bond brandy is aged in Bourbon barrels and delicious...but wreaks havoc on my body. Womp womp.
Shame. I love this one more than some expensive VSOP's (I think it's particularly tastier than the Rémy 1738 which is $30 more than this). It's also so much smoother than those, so I can drink it the easiest straight! But also over in the states it's like $40 max, so there's that
Bruh that sound amazing
In my case, I loved it, and I got a cheap price.
Hmm. I'm subscribed and yet I missed this video. Thanks RUclips. Anyway by me this Martell Blue Swift sells. I wanted to try something different so I bought a 375ml on a recommendation from a store clerk. 1/2 way into the bottle I had to give it away. I found there to be too much sweetness and I agree it is VERY unbalanced.
Yup, its crap, but don't let that one negative experience scare you away from cognac. There are some great ones out there.
It's good I like it so much I named my son After it Martell 💙
I'm gonna call my son X.O.
"Spirit Drink" is an abysmal name. Go figure? Anyhow, being a big Martell fan, and after a few years of looking at this, decided to pick one up today. Overall, was expecting more, especially from Martell. Its okay, although would not buy it again and its not worth $50. It truly does taste like cognac with bourbon added. One could get the same flavor by mixing 20% bourbon (or so) with a decent VSOP.
Definitely not as smooth as a cognac. It does improve with aeration or oxidation.
It's made of cognac its cognac.
Compared Hennessey XO vs 50 dollar Martell Swift and
Swift is smoother and Hennesey is more Petrol and tobacco leather 225 for hennessey xo not worth the money no way !
$133 million $497 billion martell
Good for cocktails. Disappointing straight IMO.
I agree but expensive mix for cocktails.
👻
But you done drank half of the shit 😅😅
Poor watches. They must be dizzy.
Haha! Yeah automatic watch movements stop if not in motion. I have since sold them and now just have a Timex Ironman digital watch. Havent had a digital watch since i was a kid.
@@JasonDebly :) thats a nice watch!
@@LatyQuinonesI think I was wearing a Seiko blue face sumo dive watch released to the Japanese domestic market only. I regret selling it.
I looked into buying a replacement but doubled in price.
Currently have my eye on the Oris in blue diver but as you know not cheap.
