When planting my seedsInstead of plastic cups, I use toilet paper rolls on the inner cup. This way I plant the tp roll with the plant and it acts as a collar to the plant for protection until it decomposes.
i do the same but il cut mine in half and put them in a plastic tray like the ones you get mince meat in, if you squash them flat then push the corners together and squash them flat the other way it makes little square tubes and they pack neatly in the tray and you can fill the soil into the tray all at once instead of filling individual tubes then plant the seds in

15:43 Oh. My cucumbers had that last year towards the end of the season. I didn't know it was a bug eating the peel. Never saw any on the plant. Saw those yellow eggs, though.
I bought seedlings from the box store and separated 8 seedlings and they all survived in the garden. Key is to do it on a cloudy day, or cover them from the sun for a couple days.
Great video! I just started my container garden this year and have grown my cucumbers from seed. They did great during germination, transplanted them into yogurt cups and they were still doing great until last week I noticed some of them were wilting over and it looked like the stems were “strangling “ themselves right at the soil level. Any idea what could had happened. Most of those that did this were not big enough to need support yet.
You can make an easy bug remover. Use 1 tablespoon of dishsoap, one tablespoon of salt, one tablespoon of saladoil, mix it together and add 1 liter of water. Try it on each plant on a small leave before, to check if the can handle it. But a small spray on a lot of pests, will remove them without poisoning your food. It works also on eggs...
This was such a great video. Very concise and well presented with a soothing voice :) There are a lot of gardeners that ramble too much and just lose my interest. Your video was outlined and full of great information without all the unnecessary fluff. Subscribing!
I’ve been growing cucumbers from Walmart Lowe’s and Home Depot for years. I always look for the plants that I buy from these places to have multiples. I have never had a problem separating them and putting them and my soil. Maybe I’m just lucky.
@@RainbowGardens but what I saw from the video you should not strip too much from the soil off of the roots and than plant then with there first leaves very close to the ground. In you video, you see, they flopping around and you touched the roots too much.
When I dont go from seed I head over to home depot and get the cucumber and okra and even zuchini in the cups you had mentioned, they come like 4 or 5 in the cup, for me, the key to seperating them and keeping them alive is not bearing the roots, being surgical and leaving some soil attached to the roots, immediatly planting them, then hitting them for 2x a day for about week with 2 3 1 fish and kelp, I foliar feed and water,,,with this technique within 3hrs I have them standing straight up looking great,,,,you are right its not easy to keep alive, but I have keep all types of veggies alive using this technique, just something I found with trial and error, NICE VIDEO :)
I'm going to try square foot gardening in my raised beds this year. My husband thinks everything will be too crowded and won't grow right. I'm going to give it a shot because everything I've seen and read said the vegetables grow great and the weeds not so much (win win in my book).
Very nice video thank you. I would like to share my experience with separating my seedlings. I am a complete newbie gardener and therefore had no idea what I was doing haha I planted about 8 cucumber seeds into quite a small pot to start them. I didn't know they would grow into giants in less than 2 weeks! Yes they were leggy but strong stems. Still with no idea what I was doing, I carefully tipped the whole lot out onto my work surface and proceeded to re pot each one into their own solo cups. In about a week they were all super happy and healthy and I realised I had no room to put them all. I kept 4, thinking at least 2 would probably die but at least I would have something left..... planted 4 out into my garden. I now have 3 giant cucumber vines grabbing onto everything they can! So maybe I just accidentally picked up cuckes with super tough root systems lol
Thanks! That's what mine did too, but they never got much bigger once the summer heat set in. They matured to have about 7 huge leaves but then dwindled away. It could be because I don't live at the garden where I planted them and perhaps, they did not get enough water from natural rainfall. Keep us updated. :)
This was my first time stopping by your channel, and I really enjoyed the video. I am starting out with raised beds and SFG, and I like your trellis. I tried the Amazon link, but for some reason It didn’t work. Do they sell it? Thank you in advance.
Thanks for this video. This is my third year using square foot gardening. Each year, I look for improvement, and your video was very thorough and quite helpful. Happy gardening. 😍
interesting so u use Mel's mix sparingly huh. I have just have stayed away because of the cost of vermiculite...I'm with u on the double planted seedlings...I've tried a few times and it just doesn't seem to work
I make my beds with Mel's Mix. But after year or so, I either refresh the entire bed with the mix, or just add a little to the square, especially for my summer veggies like peppers and cucumbers. It is expensive at the home improvement stores but I get 4 cubic feet at the special nursery or online for around $30 - $35. Here is a video where I reviewed it in depth: ruclips.net/video/EGYg7Ia80MM/видео.html
Great video, thank you. I've tried many times to grow cucumber, they are easy to germinate , start off great, very vigorous but then die. Now I know it's powdery mildew. I've been spraying the ones I have out now with neem oil but doesn't seem to be working, the bottom leaves are still dying and the ant population doesn't seem to lessen. I've also tried spraying the leaves with baking soda diluted water...any suggestions ? I'm in South Florida and we've just started getting the rain
Yes, the plant spacing is in the book. For example, in a 4' x 4' bed, you would have 16 squares. In one square, you could plant 16 carrots, 2 cucumbers in another, 9 bush bean plants in a square, one tomato plant per square ( i usually plant about 3 tomato plants per 4x4), and much more! You can grow a lot in one 4 x 4 bed.
Is 'disease resistant' mean a 'genetic modified seed"? G.M. food is not a nutritious product as Heirloom seed. Heirloom is harder to grow at first until the seed you harvest becomes acclimated to your garden and area.
I was just thinking, it's ridiculous to try to grow a cucumber in a square foot... Oh, she's planting TWO of them. 3:58 plant seeds every which way against the sides of jars and see what difference it makes.
A little learning is a dangerous thing........I removed a cucumber plant that was outgrowing the Greenstalk; then I saw this video. First, maybe the Greenstalk was not the best choice for a cucumber plant, and second I should not have moved it to a 10-inch pot. It is still green and vertical, and it may surprise me by surviving. I really must view your videos before proceeding farther down the garden path.

Yes in Texas. We don’t have a lot of the issues that others do here due to the warmer climates.

Fantastic!
Do you use mels mix?
Yes, I have a video on my channel. Happy Gardening!
In my experience, If you sow them flat in the soil, the seed shell doesn't get stuck on the cotyledons when it sprouts.
